PLAN A WEEK WITH ME how I lesson plan

hello everyone welcome back to my channel if you're new my name is Katie and am third grade teacher in the State of Florida this is my fifth year teaching if you're not new thank you so much for coming back for another video today's video is one that has been requested by couple people on my channel really love when you guys give me feedback about things that you want to see in videos because it helps me create things that you guys want to watch so today I'm doing little planned with me video it's not going to be super aesthetic or beautiful or anything but it's going to give you glimpse into how take these lovely books and turn them into lesson plans for the week and kind of how pace and spread out my week so I'm gonna do the best that can to show you like what my computer screen looks like but also have some clips of me actually planning and like showing you stuff do want to put disclaimer out am at my house because it's Saturday and do not usually plan on Saturdays usually do this throughout the week like I'll pick day of the week where I'm like okay don't have any meetings today so I'm going to plan my language arts for next week or okay have time during my planning so I'm going to sit down and take look at math so don't usually do this at home but since lot of you guys have been one to see like plane with me video and this past week was like Halloween week and it was like super busy anyways was like that's fine just won't have that on my to-do list for this week and will take it home and do it at home so the first thing that want to share before we jump into it is let's go over the curriculums that use while I'm pulling up my lesson planning file so for math we teach from the GO Math curriculum and use the GO Math sessions to kind of guide my lesson planning so say what you will about go math that's what we use because it's required in my district and then language arts we use my view literacy we're brand new to this curriculum am not brand new to go math use it last year when taught first grade that was my first year teaching it before using go math curriculum used investigations math when taught in Alabama and loved investigations math it was so great I'm not as big of fan of go math but I'm like getting more familiar with it so that makes it little bit better and then at least know like what like to supplement or add in interchange or not do from the curriculum the mighty literacy curriculum is brand new to our district brand new to me so are all the third grade standards so that's fun time have taught wonders previously so those are the curriculums that I've used as far as lesson planning templates go know I've shared this in vlog before but just use this freebie template that found on Teachers Pay Teachers will link it in the description so you guys can get it if you would like it is very simple it's two pages that lays out my daily schedule for my classroom in blocks so can see like the whole schedule of the week and it's not very free don't know what your District requires you to do or what your school requires you to do but we don't have to submit lesson plans at my school everywhere was previously we did we need to submit them weekly but this year do not at the school that I'm at they just kind of trust us to do our plans and execute right and so if they come in they expect us to know what we're teaching and have like plan and be doing those plans to help ourselves but we don't have to submit them which is really nice so just you use the Tes to teach lot and so my lesson plans look sparse because of that because sometimes it'll say like this session and go math and it just depends on if I've like really poured into it so if like took time to go through read through the whole session then on my lesson plans could put do math 4.3 but if haven't then sometimes I'll put like outlines of what that session looks like in my plans so when I'm glancing at it can be like yeah yeah remember this now so it just kind of depends so my template is pretty pretty bare I've also used plan book to plan lessons before use that last year my school paid for it so I'm not using that this year because my school doesn't pay for it think there's free version don't know but liked doing it on plain book too because you could copy and paste lessons click buttons to extend them so if you like digital planning then that's good option for you as well do do this on the computer digital and then print it front and back and just keep it on my desk during the day so it's there and can make notes and Mark and say okay we didn't get to this session we'll do this tomorrow this came up we'll move this stuff like that so I'm gonna flip the camera little bit so you can kind of see closer you may not be able to see my face but you can kind of see closer what my planning template looks like and then we will go through and plan week and if sit here and put my books here that should give enough room okay so here's kind of what my planning template looks like it's literally just word document that says Miss Allen's weekly plans these are my plans from last week so every week just click on file duplicate and rename the file so this will be the week of November 7th that's what I'm gonna try that again week of November 7th all right so then go through and the first thing I'll do is kind of fix well I'll pull this down so because never want to edit the old ones on accident so the first thing kind of do will zoom in so you can see is fix all of the headings up at the top so it is no longer week 12 it is now week 13. we are on the week of November 7th in English language arts we are just doing unit two week two and in math we are still on chapter four so all of those things are updated at the top now this takes us step by step through my day it's got my schedule so have morning routine attendance stem Ben's morning meeting slash announcements and then we have my math block right here so what do is kind of look and see where did leave off last week and last week left off with the distributive property and actually didn't teach this lesson on Friday so I'm going to copy it and I'm gonna come paste it right here on Monday so I've got the distributive property and then review skip counting songs if that's too big I'll make it like smaller where's my text because like for it to only take up one line okay so we'll start off by reviewing skip counting songs and then if look into my go math curriculum at the distributive property know from talking with my fellow teachers that this lesson takes long time and there's lot of like information in it and it gives it to them all at once so what I've been told or recommended is to break it down into two days so what we're going to do is review our skip counting songs for fours and sixes and I'm also going to introduce the Hall of Fame where if they sing the song for me they can sign poster and be written up on the Hall of Fame for skip counting songs then what I'm going to do is I'm going to type in practice distributive property with square tiles and rulers and so what I'm going to do is students make arrays to match multiplication problems practice dividing into two arrays in writing two multiplication problems so instead of doing just the GO Math session that's what I'm going to do to practice I'm going to make that little smaller so it fits in the Box better and then for day two or next Tuesday I'm going to copy and paste this whole thing over and I'm going to put in distributive property we'll review our skip counting songs at the beginning we'll probably add skip counting by sevens by that day we'll add that skip counting song and then take look at the session so think we're gonna jump into the session on that day and we'll start with our unlock the problem so I'm going to do unlock the problem so I'm gonna say show six times seven on the board students make arrays kind of the same thing we did the day before students make arrays on desk talk about ways to split the number seven practice dividing arrays then I'm going to say start in SE which is student Edition page 145. so like to do one thing like to do for go math is instead of doing this unlike unlock the problem with my kiddos at the very beginning sometimes will do it on the board without them looking at the textbook and then open it back up because the textbook page can be very overwhelming and some students just like to fly to the end or they might look at this equation and think my gosh what the heck am doing so what we'll do here is we'll we'll do it like on our table first and talk about it and then we'll pick up and we'll start in the chapter and then we'll do the same thing again for nine times six and then they'll be able to practice kind of running the numbers in the blank and following along so we'll probably go through to the end of the lesson probably to foreign would say probably through 147 would be our goal will that happen maybe maybe not I'm not sure and if it doesn't that's okay will just make note all right so now I'm going to flip over to find out what the next session was and after that we have lesson on multiplying by sevens good and then our mid chapter check so we will come over here and change the title so after 4.4 we'll do that one two days we'll do math 4.5 which is multiplied by sevens so review cross this out review skip counting song by sevens that makes sense because we'll be doing multiplying by sevens and then they have like things that you can do to warm up and some like daily routines but don't do all of those we actually do like Mac warm-up problems that we have that's like another product so we go through and we'll do those first and grade our homeworks and stuff like that and then we jump into the lesson so if I'm looking at this lesson finding four times seven what I'll probably do is instead of jumping into the book I'll probably put four times seven on the board use white boards to solve and then share out strategies because some students like to use the number line some will use equal groups some might Use the distributive property they might not use the distributed property don't know so we will just have to see on that one and then we will start in our student Edition on page 149 and we can show the strategies that they use to find the answer it looks like they Use the distributive property and we'll probably go through page 150. and now this is where I'm going to the next thing that we have is the mid chapter checkpoint and so I'm actually going to put that at the end right here usually put that on day by itself and we do like one day where it's just like quiz and then pull students for intervention during that time but I'm trying to get this math test in before Thanksgiving break so think I'm going to try to combine this so if we get to the end of this session and we have time I'm going to have students use privacy walls to do the mid chapter checkpoint because it's not super long and my team teachers have said they've already gotten there and their students have had great success with it so we will do that so then I'm going to scroll down to the next page and in my math block right here I'm going to come and find four point six which is the next lesson and that starts the associative property so I'm going to type that in right here 4.6 associative property and then kind of take glance and see all right what do they have for the associative property and what like to do for the associative property personally found is well probably and I'll need to look something up we'll review our skip counting songs you skip counting songs and then we will do associative property of addition review so we will do some addition problems it looks like the book does that that's so nice so I'll use the example that's in the book where they have two plus three plus four what order would you add does it change the sum just to show them and remind them like when we're adding it doesn't matter what order we add them in because then we're going to relate it to multiplication so we'll do this on the board on board right three times two times two associative property is the same with multiplication which two would you multiply first does the order change the product so we'll do that up on the board and then we will start see don't really like mean that is the unlike the problem on this page but so I'm not using an array and then gripping them with parentheses so we'll probably talk about the parentheses when we do that one so I'm going to say we'll probably start on page 156 is where we'll jump back into the lesson p156 and we'll do example at the top practice problems yeah practice problems below all right and then Friday is Veterans Day so I'm gonna have that box empty and up here I'll just put veterans Day holiday so that box will be empty in fact can just go ahead and delete everything from that Friday box all right so that takes us through my math planning didn't take too long don't think let's see how long did that take okay looking at the camera it only took like 10 minutes to go through my math plans now will prepare more and like the morning before teach it dive into the thing little bit more and I've read through these lessons little bit more in depth but like that's how plan out my scope for the week all right so as you can see not too bad know it's hard to see like the lesson plan template from where y'all are but if again linked it so you can kind of see what it looks like so what will do next is jump into the my view curriculum and for the my view curriculum have shared this in Vlogs before but like here's how we teach it we don't do unit one week one in one week we do seven day rotation so day one two three four and five we used to introduce and teach all the material day six is the day that we used to assess and then day seven we do writing because we've had hard time fitting it all into our reading block during the weeks and so we kind of isolate the writing and we go with the scope that like the order that they have like narrative informational opinion Etc but we don't use as many of the resources because we're just not mean it's lot of new stuff and so some of us are just doing what we know how to do for teaching writing this year and maybe next year we'll be able to like take deeper dive into to the writing in this curriculum we'll see so what do first when start the my view is I'm going to come down to where my Ela block was and it says Halloween Ela because last Monday was Halloween and I'm going to look at where left off and always put like the day number so when go and look just deleted it well usually when go and look can see that Thursday was day one so Friday was day two in our like rotation so when come up here I'm going to type in whole group reading and then type in day three so can remember that am on day three of the my view planning and instruction and the day kind of determines what put in the Box okay so I'm gonna flip you back around so you can see the my view book and all that stuff all right so let's get planning for my view I'm gonna push this back make sure you can still kind of see it if put it right there all right we are in unit two week two so I'm gonna open up my book and find unit two week two it's up at the top three too far all right unit two week two day three is technically going to be on lesson three so by the time we get to lesson three we have already done lot of good vocabulary practice with our words so this is what like to put in the developing vocabulary page which they have in lesson two but always do it in lesson three so I'm gonna say review essential question then say review vocabulary and type in the page number so we're going to review it on page 290 where we're talking about we put in the vocabulary word Predator the author is using that word to describe animals that live by eating off of other animals this word helps me know which animals are predators and how they behave and example sentence lines are predators do the same thing with species and immune so that's good little vocabulary practice then jump in to the actual day three and so we will do our first close read of our text so on day two we do our first read on day three we're on our first close read and there's always some kind of focus so it says analyze text structure so always put first close read and then put in parentheses analyze text structure and then put dash and say underline because underlining is the strategy that we use on the first close read so when it has their text in here here's like the text in the book it'll tell them in the margins like when we get to that page they'll say underline the cause and effect of the Impala's dancing or underlying words and phrases that show the sequence of the ants activities so it's all focusing on different text structures so I'll probably also say need to add bullet point that says review text structures on page and that's in that little anchor chart page which would be page number 273. so they get good review of like what the text structures are then we're going to close read we're going to underline what it's asking us to do to find the text structure and then we will do word study review we're working on our controlled vowels always like to look and see if like what they have for word study review if they've got good practice page in here which they don't for lesson three it's kind of mess kind of all over the place okay so we could do this with page 296. page 100 page 296 because we haven't done that one yet and that's all put in there for whole group and then for small group it's our independent work time and kind of type in like what I'm doing with my groups so groups one and two we're going to and won't meet with all these groups during this day start decodable text and then with groups three through five I'm going to start my view reader text all right and then science we always do our mystery science lesson on Monday and then if we have time we will review the Sun Moon and stars so Mystery Science usually takes upper full time it's really fun if you've never used Mystery Science that's what we do okay and then down here I'm going to take out fall party and we'll have Tech time which stays the same on each day we do extra math first and then students log into Lexia okay so there was day one or Monday it's day three okay so now what I'm gonna do is come over to my whole group and I'm going to work on planning day day four so I'm gonna copy like to copy and paste it because it's kind of similar like we will review the essential question again and actually we've started doing something new so I'll probably put another bullet and I'll type in language review because we started doing weekly language review so I'll put that in there too language review review the essential question we'll review our vocabulary words but this time we'll just go over the definitions we won't do an extra page for it we won't need to review text structures on that day because we will have done it the day before so this time we're going to do our second close read and usually when you get to the second close read in this curriculum like when turn the page it's okay yeah it's that's lesson five think that's what want won't listen for it's different strategy so if we were looking at here we go evaluating details so yesterday would have been analyzing text structure so now we're Val evaluating details and our strategy is not underlining anymore it is highlighting so for example highlight details that explain why the shear water allows the Tuatara to stay in its burrow can you tell we haven't gotten to this part in our first read yet so we're going to highlight some details in the text so what we'll probably need to do after we review vocabulary is review main idea and details and I'll probably do that in the form of turn and talk about main idea of text and details you remember so far uh-huh okay that sounds good so then we'll do our second work through like this like this page so it's like it's talking about the two different animal friends it's really focusing in so will say page 293 if time because that really is great like it's saying look at this animal pear the ostrich and the zebra what was the what's detail they give you about those things and then why is that important it shows how they can work together so really like that like work together to warn each other and then we'll do word study review again need it oops needed to delete all these extra enters so it doesn't make my boxes too big all right and then that's all we would have time for on day four again for small group I'm gonna put this in and this isn't the exact day would teach this small group but we're going to say continue decodable text and continue because it takes us more than one day to read these texts and then we're going to come down to science so for science we're going to start digital lesson think it's 1.3 so that's what we'll start doing which is digital experiment for the kiddos so now I'm going to go to day seven or not day seven it's day five in our block but it's Wednesday again I'm going to copy paste because this is always just kind of edit what I've already done so we'll do our language review we'll review our essential question and I'm going to make that one bullet and vocabulary then what we're gonna do is practice practice weekly skills with on level cold read text so we'll work together as class and their cold reads are online they're not in this book but they have cold reads that are just like what they'll see on their tests the next day so we will do an on level cold read text and our focus on text structure and Main Idea slash details using informational text reading strategies so we will read through it together practice strategies reading it twice stopping at each paragraph focusing on text structure all of that stuff then what we'll probably do is will give can't decide if I'm going to give the groups time to read this text together because this week's text is like really really long so I'm thinking we won't do partner read because it would take like long time maybe what we'll do before we do the on level cold read is we will review weekly text by doing page 291 so they always have this like check for understanding section which think is really good how can we know that this is informational text why do you think the author included the headings what can the reader conclude about the relationship between zebras and ostriches and how would you prove that pair of animal friends can help each other use text evidence so we can do that together and then we'll practice our weekly skills with an on-level cold read and then after that we'll do partner spelling practice and I'm going to put in there if time it kind of depends on how long it takes us to do all that part ner spelling practice and that would be our word study review for the day and then at the end I'm going to type in selection quiz on their own so this will kind of take us into small group reading there's always selection quiz on our weekly text that's just five questions for the text they've already read four times so we would do that and then for small group reading I'm going to put groups one and two we're gonna say Main idea slash details because it comes with comprehension questions so we might do that and then with groups three through five we will do main idea slash details organizer with their text which is more on their level science we will continue digital lesson and lesson guide there we go okay so then we're all the way down to Thursday skipping down to whole group reading this is going to be day six so our assessment for day six we will do our progress which is our unit two week two progress checkup I'm gonna put in parentheses print out the text so students have hard copy of the text and we also before do the progress checkup we actually do spelling test as well and then we don't have small group reading on that day put in and then science will be finished digital lesson and start 1.4 if time so if we have time we'll start our next lesson and that's it so then the last thing do is go through and change my special areas for the week and keeping last week's on there is pretty helpful when I'm typing in the special area we go to music then we'll go to media center then we'll go to PE and then on Thursday we will have art and that's it and make sure click save over and over again shoot all right seriously bumped the camera at the end of that shot so if it was shaky that's why that is my lesson planning in nutshell it probably took me about 40 minutes or so to do like the whole week to look and plan it out obviously do lot more pouring over the curriculum and things but just can't sit here and memorize curriculum while I'm lesson planning so do better to like skim through get the big idea get it onto paper with my thoughts and then like the day that I'm teaching it sit during my planning or like in the morning before teach math sit and look through it and make sure know exactly what I'm doing and then do the same thing for language arts this gives me heads up like hey you need to pull resource for this or hey you need to spend some time coming up with examples for this and then can prep that stuff but then as far as like looking through it one more time do that before teach it because remember it better because can't memorize curriculum like just from teaching it once so also didn't mention anything about my small group instructions so if you're interested in my small group instruction I've posted about it on my Instagram so here's little post have chart during that small group time my students do their independent work which is their spelling and vocabulary practice and then they also have some comprehension and like written response practice they get all the things and they have to check them off their checklist so all of them are working on that and pull groups to my table do not see every group every day because we only do that for about 35 to 40 minutes day so have schedule for which day see which group and when pull them that's what do so put it in here like super organized like I'm gonna do this with all these people on Wednesday and that's not the case but know like the first time meet with my lower two groups we always do word or the first time meet with all of my groups except for like my gifted group we do word study practice and then the second time we do text and the third time we do text with an application and the text will be varied by by their skill level anyways just got so distracted because David's outside mowing so that's the end of my plan with me video it was super boring but feel like it was super practical that really showed you how go through everything for week this was good way to do it because only had to do four days too so that was kind of nice yay we're
