Grade 4 Chapter 9 Lesson 7 Subtract Mixed Numbers

hey everyone welcome back to my channel learn math with mr sad for another video lesson today's lesson for grade four chapter nine lesson seven subtract mixed numbers page number is 599 okay guys this lesson is just like the last one in which we were adding the mixed numbers here we will subtract the mixed numbers as you know that fraction number that have whole number and fraction together we call it mixed number so first of all we will add the whole numbers four whole and one whole mean sorry will subtract the mixed numbers the whole numbers so 4 minus 1 is equal to 3 whole and then we will subtract the fractions 3 over 4 minus 1 over 4 is equal to 2 over 4. and now we know that we can simplify this dividing by two up and down so two divide two one and four divide two two and three whole as it is okay here they are following the procedure like converting it into improper fraction we can follow directly this way or if you want you can use this way also to convert an improper mixed number into improper fraction we multiply the whole number with the denominator 4 times 4 16 and add the numerator 16 plus 3 19 over 4 1 times 4 4 plus 1 5 5 over 4 and then you subtract it 19 minus 5 14 over 4 and then you again change it into mixed number how many fours we can take out of fourteen three whole fours we can take out of fourteen and if you take out three whole fours what left behind two so it will be three whole two over four and then you simplify it divide by two up and divide by 2 down you will get 3 whole 1 over 2. so this is long process you can follow this process directly directly minus the whole numbers first and then the fractions and while subtracting the fractions guys keep this thing in mind we never subtract the denominators the denominators always stays the same okay next page here again the same thing three whole one over five minus 2 whole 2 over 5. now see this guys here 1 is small number and 2 is big so we cannot minus 2 from 1. in that case what we do we take one carry from the three and when we take one carry from the three the three will become two and now because these are mixed numbers these are not normal numbers if we take one in normal numbers when we are subtracting when we take carry we add 1 right we add 1 here it will become 11. now what we will do here now we add the denominator with the numerator so five plus one it will become six over five listen again guys when we take one carry when we notice that the first number is smaller than the second number we cannot subtract like one is smaller than two so we cannot subtract two from one so in that case what we do we take one carry from three it will become two whole and then when we take carry what we add in the numerator the denominator so 5 plus 1 6 over 5 and the second fraction as it is wrote it here 2 minus 2 minus 0 no whole so we don't write it and 6 minus 2 4 over 5. this second way they are converting it into improper fractions and then subtracting okay how to check your answer like if you add your answer with the second subtrahend you will get sorry this is called the minuend if you get the subtrahend it means your answer is correct okay here this is simple we can minus five minus one four four minus one three over eight but here again one is small two is big we cannot minus so in that case what we do we take one carry from six it will become five and what we add in the numerator the denominator three plus one four over three the denominator same minus the second fraction same and then subtract it five minus two three and four minus two two so three whole two over three it's already simplified similarly guys you will solve all these questions here in independent practice and then match your answers through the video eight minus three is five and two minus two is zero so we don't write zero over three that's it it is five whole no fractions left when we minus 2 over 3 minus 2 over 3 is equal to 0. okay next page here mrs gracia has five whole six or eight boxes of paper she used three whole seven over eight boxes so how many boxes does she left we cannot minus seven from 6 so we will change it into 4 whole 14 over 8 how we take one carry from 5 which will become 4 and add the denominator with the numerator 8 plus 6 14 over 8 minus the second fraction one whole seven over eight same thing here guys we cannot minus eleven from five so we take one carry from two it will become one and add the denominator with the numerator 12 plus 5 17 over 12 minus 11 over 12 1 minus there's no whole so it's the same number same whole number 17 minus 11 6 over 12 and then we simplify it divide by six up and six down so it will be one whole one over two four whole seven over ten minus one whole nine over ten again we cannot minus nine from seven nine is big so we take one carry from four it will be three and add the denominator in the numerator ten plus seven seventeen over ten minus one whole nine over ten the same we wrote
