now let's say if we have cylinder with radius of 8 inches and let's say that the height of this cylinder is 12 inches calculate the lateral area and the surface area the lateral area is basically the perimeter times the height and the perimeter is basically the circumference of the circle and so that's 2 pi and then times the height which is so that's the lateral area the radius in this example is 8 and the height is 12. so 2 times 8 that's 16 and 16 times 12 is 192 so the lateral area of this cylinder is 192 pi square inches now let's calculate the total surface area the surface area is the area of the base plus the lateral area now the area of the base is basically the area of circle and the area of circle is pi squared but we have two circles one at the bottom one at the top so it's gonna be two pi squared and the lateral area is two pi so the area of the base is gonna be 2 pi times 8 squared and then the lateral area is 192 pi 8 squared is 64 and 64 times 2 is 128 so we need to add 128 plus 192 so therefore the total surface area is 320 pi inches squared so that's the answer for this example that's the surface area and this is lateral area you
