93. Surah Ad-Duha (Morning Light) At the beginning of prophethood, being prophet was very hard job for Muhammad (s). At that point, Allah (swt) revealed only little bit of the Quran. Since Muhammad (s) was the prophet of our ummah, he had to make himself living Quran so the people would understand how to follow Allah (swt)’s orders correctly. So when someone would see him, right away they would understand the meaning of the Quran. But at the beginning, this was very difficult for Muhammad (s), both physically and mentally. Allah (swt) knew this was lot for him especially at the beginning, so to give him some rest, Allah (swt) for little bit, stopped sending the Quranic chapters. At first Muhammad (s) thought, that Allah (swt) was angry at him and left him all alone in his Dawah work. But that’s not true. Even all the bad people started to laugh at him and insulted him as false prophet. All of this made prophet Muhammad (s) very sad and hopeless. But to encourage him and make him mentally strong, almost one month later Allah (swt) sent Surah Duha by mentioning day and night. (1-3) After busy day we might become very tired. So, Allah (swt) turns the daytime into nighttime for our peace and rest so that we can be ready and refreshed for the next busy day. At the beginning of the prophethood, Muhammad (s) felt extra pressure physically and mentally. When Jibrail (a) used to give him some sentences of the Quran to Muhammad (s), he felt extreme physical pressure and would start to sweat. It was so stressful for him that he could not even move his own hand. If Muhammad (s) was on top of camel, right away the camel would sit down because of the extreme pressure. He also faced social pressure to bring back the true religion. Lots of bad people started to give him hard time and spread lies and bad information about him. Basically, as soon as Islam came, it completely changed his way of life. So when Allah (swt) paused the revelation of the Quran, prophet Muhammad (s), was able to get some rest, and he was able to calm down and become relaxed and didn’t have to worry about trying to be the role model for the new verses so quickly. Allah (swt) did this because He loved the prophet so much from the very beginning. (4-5) Allah (swt) gave Muhammad (s) promise during very difficult time when only few Muslims were with him. Allah (swt) said day by day his situation will be better and better. His power, glory, and honor will all increase. He told him that he would be very successful in this world. Allah (swt) also told him that he would give him the very highest reward and respect in the Hereafter. Allah (swt) promised that by the end, Muhammad (s) would be very happy when he saw how his hard work would successfully change the world forever. People will happily change and come to the true religion and do good actions. (6) Allah (swt) love the prophet very much from his childhood. He supported Muhammad (s) when he was born as an orphan. His mother took care of him until the age of six. After his mother died his grandfather took care of him until the age of eight. When his grandfather died, his uncle Abu Talib gave him great love. Even when he became Prophet, and the entire nation became his enemy, his uncle Abu Talib continued to support him for years so that he could spread Islam. (7) Even before Muhammad (s) became Prophet, he did not know where to find the true faith. He was looking for the right guidance to change his very bad and injustice society. Then the merciful Allah (swt) gave him Islam to guide humankind forever. (8) Allah (swt) also solved his financial problems. Basically, he was very poor in his childhood. His father left him only camel and servant. When he became young, Allah (swt) gave him very rich business partner Khadija (r). Then with his own hard work and ability, Allah (swt) made him rich independent businessman in Makkah. (9-11) When Muhammad (s) was an orphan and poor, Allah (swt) helped him. So, Allah (swt) tells him that he should be grateful for all the blessings that he got from Allah (swt). And to show that he was really thankful, Allah (swt) advised him to give back kindness by helping other orphans and the poor and needy people in very polite and kind way. Finally, Allah advised that He should also spread the message of Islam and teach the lessons of the Quran to all kinds of people to show Allah (swt) blessings. Important Facts of Ad-Duha The name of this surah came from the first word of the Surah. Allah (swt) sent this Surah in Makkah during the beginning of prophethood. Allah (swt) sent this surah, Ad-Duha, right before Surah Al-Inshirah. Surah Ad-Duha means the morning bright light. This Surah has only 11 short sentences. To be good Muslim, we must take care of orphans and the needy. We can be happy by helping others. To get the highest reward, we should treat people well. We should always remember Allah (swt)’s blessing in our lives.
