well, hello. Sorry. was in the middle No, I'm just kidding. was was pretending to do what sometimes my students do when when I'm about to teach. They're not allowed to have their phones in class, but they're allowed to have them right at at the beginning of class. So. hey, good morning. We're going to do lesson on describing cars and transportation. Let me just let me just think about what I'm going to say next. I'm trying to form my thoughts cuz Ryan has question. I'm thinking becoming member of the channel, is it worth it? Well, here's what will say. Number one, if you become member, you'll have to judge for yourself. Wait, do have to ban somebody here? I've never haven't had to do this in long time. Let's see here. put user in timeout. 5 minutes. There we go. okay. So, if you become member, you get little lesson plan every Monday morning called week at glance. You get an extra video on Wednesdays with which people tend to enjoy. You get your name in green during live streams. You get to participate in members-only chat during live streams. So, there are few things that you might enjoy. All would say is this, if you're not sure, maybe become member for month and see if you like it. And then if you don't, then cancel. It's not huge amount of money. Anyways, was supposed to say this at the beginning of the live stream. If everyone could give thumbs up below the video, if you appreciate the content that make and you give thumbs up right now, it will make YouTube aware that I'm doing something worthwhile for people to watch while do it live. So, if you look below, there's little thumbs up thing. If you give thumbs up, that will help the video. So, everything's working. Let's formally start the lesson. Well, hello and welcome to this live don't usually say live, do Should start again? Sure. One second. have to click something here. There we go. Now everything's working great. Well, hello and welcome to this English lesson about describing cars and transportation. do want to mention that this isn't just lesson about cars. This isn't just lesson an English lesson for people who love cars. In this English lesson, will describe cars and trains and the subway and even one of the slides has bicycle on it. will teach you adjectives, words that you can use to describe different ways of moving around in vehicles and using city transportation. So, once again, welcome to this English lesson about describing cars and transportation. have about 30 words that I'm going to teach you in this lesson. Good, that's done. If you're wondering why do that, it's because edit the video later to be more of formal lesson and do need bit of an intro for that to work. let's see here. think we're ready to start. Let me say hi to Unsel, Wanda, Jahan, Torihiki, Pedro, Aerosmith, Judith is here as well. scrolling back, Mode Eggs. Mode says you were also supposed to sing the live stream song at the beginning. was was singing the banana phone song this morning for some reason. There's song that goes don't want to get copyright strike, but it's like ring, ring, ring, ring, ring banana phone and then you use banana as if it's phone. It's something you do to make little kids laugh. Anyways, good morning to Mode and Freddy and Midnight Ramen and World Record and Emmanuel and Key Park is here as well. think Pedro was up here earlier. Uliana, lots of familiar names. good to see all of you. Thank you to all of you who gave thumbs up. That's awesome. saw the little thumbs up go from 20 all the way up to 50. So, if you do still want to give thumbs up, that'd be great. But we're going to start the lesson. Mode says, good. Now Nightbot responded." warned that person, but it was little too late. Okay, here we go. Compact. It doesn't say compact. What am talking about? Cramped. When you describe form of transportation as cramped, it means having lot of people inside. You can use this word to describe train, the subway, car. If went to visit someone and rode with other people in their car, and if there were let's say it was smaller car and there were six of us in there, it might be really cramped. would need to sit like this. We also sometimes use the word crowded, but like the word cramped because think it gives better sense of what's happening here. Some of you might say this this train car isn't that cramped at all. But for me, when see almost everyone standing when take the train to Toronto, feel like it is very cramped. It's very crowded. Having lot of people inside. Spacious. So, this is the opposite. You can see that spacious means having lot of space inside for people. So, if you see this ve- vehicle here, it looks like minivan. Everyone has lots of room. Especially the kids in the back seat. They even have some extra room between them. would say the inside of this minivan is very, very spacious. no one is bumping up against someone else. Everyone has lots of room. They probably could even have some stuff on the seat beside them, but spacious having lot of space inside for people. Roomy. Now, this is really just the same as spacious. Having plenty of space inside. In fact, spacious and roomy mean the same thing. And we don't always just use this to talk about vehicles. You could say took an Uber and it was very roomy inside." Or I'm trying to think of another example here. but certainly this vehicle with no people in it looks very roomy. But the seats as well are very far apart and everyone would be very comfortable because it is roomy. Having plen- plenty of space inside. Convenient. Easy to use or access. So, this is actually streetcar in Toronto. So, when say convenient, it could mean number of things. It could mean that the stop where this picks people up is right outside your house or apartment. It could mean that it very quickly brings you from home to work and that it runs on time and frequently. So, if said to someone, "You know, live in Toronto. don't need car because the streetcars are so convenient or the subway is so convenient or the bus stop is right outside my apartment. It's very convenient." So, when you describe form of transportation as convenient, it means easy to use or access. Packed. Completely full of people. So, this is similar to cramped, yes, or crowded. When you are on vehicle that looks like this, you could say it is packed. We wouldn't really use this to talk about car, though. We would mostly use this to talk about public transportation. The bus was packed. the subway car was packed. You can even use it to talk about location. The mall was packed yesterday. There were lots of people there. Nimble. Moves and turns easily in tight spaces. So, there's reason why DoorDash and Uber Eats and food delivery people use bikes and e-bikes. An e-bike is an electric bike. because it moves and turns easily in tight spaces. If needed to deliver food 2 km away from restaurant in city, would want to use an e-bike or bike because it's easy to move between cars and buses and people. This is how Bob rides bike. and so it's nimble. It moves and turns easily in tight spaces. It's probably faster to drive 2 km in busy city using bike or e-bike than it is to drive car. Because with car, you are the opposite. It's not very nimble. you're stuck in traffic. Gas guzzler. So, uses large amount of fuel very quickly. This is actually the car that my mom and dad had in the late '80s, think it was. think it's Ford Crown Victoria. And it was gas guzzler. So, you can kind of picture this. when you have car like this, you fill it up with gas and then it just uses gas very, very quickly. And so, we would call it gas guzzler. Right now, the price of gas in Canada and around the world keeps going up. And so, if you have gas guzzler, it's not very nice. By the way, this is kind of an informal term gas guzzler. But if you said to someone in Canada or in the United States that, my car is gas guzzler." They know that it uses lot of gas. Usually gas guzzler has really big engine with lots of cylinders, probably an eight-cylinder engine. And when you drive, it uses lots and lots of gas. Or petrol if you're in Britain. The opposite, of course, would be fuel-efficient. Uses small amount of fuel to travel far. think this is Toyota Prius. it's actually Prius Hybrid, isn't it? You can see that on the front. This is the one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the world. It uses very little gas or very little fuel, very small amount to go very, very far. have coworker who used to have Toyota Prius and he was very, very happy with it because it was so fuel-efficient. He could drive so far without filling up with gas that he was amazed every time. His other vehicle was Ford pickup truck, which would be the opposite. Ford pickup truck would be bit more of gas guzzler, not totally, but his Prius was very, very fuel-efficient. Armored and bulletproof. So, an armored vehicle is protected with strong materials for safety. So, this is vehicle designed for safety so that the people inside are safe. should have put picture here of what we call Brinks truck or an armored truck that they use to carry money in the city. In Canada, when they bring lots of money from one place to another, they usually use an armored vehicle to protect the people inside while they carry large amounts of money. But armored, protected with strong materials for safety. And then there is in armored in Canada. In the United States, there is no And then bulletproof. Designed to stop bullets and protect passengers. So, this might look like normal vehicle to you, but it probably has bulletproof proof glass and the doors and sides are probably bulletproof as well. It's designed to stop bullets and protect passengers. The leaders of countries, when they travel, will often be in bulletproof vehicle that will look lot like this in North America. If saw four of these driving down the highway, would think it must be Prime Minister Carney. It must be the leader of our country because that's usually who would drive around in bulletproof vehicle like that. Modern. Uses new design and up-to-date technology. So, do not have modern vehicles. In fact, the last vehicle bought was the first vehicle to have backup camera, which to me was really modern, but the vehicle is 10 years old. But this to me is very modern vehicle. The entire dash is screen. And you can see that the person driving it can see the map, probably can see the speedometer, and all of the other indicators on that dash. But this to me would be modern vehicle. Uses new design and up-to-date technology. Reliable. This is think this is Toyota Hilux, one of the most reliable trucks in the world. I'm not 100% sure, though. but reliable, works well and does not break down often. So, if you wanted to have vehicle that was very, very reliable, where you can drive for years and you n- never need to really fix anything except maybe put on new brake pads or change the oil, think this would be good vehicle for you. This is not I'm not sponsored, by the way, by Toyota. But reliable. Works well and does not break down often. Most of my vehicles have been quite reliable. I'm pretty happy about that. do tend to get my vehicles serviced regularly, regular oil changes and those kinds of things. And think that helps to make the vehicles more reliable. But reliable, works well and does not break down often. Hey, let's do some questions. Let's see. like reading the chat little bit. So, Pedro, yes, since he's he's learning Canadian American accent. yeah, people just talking to each other. That's what like to see. there's lot of questions. From Judit. Here we go. Hi Bob, which transportation is the most important to you now? How could you be without it? Thank you for the answer. So, for me, need reliable vehicle to drive to work every day, and I'll teach you another term about that in bit. But for me, as long as have something that is reliable, don't care what it looks like. Usually like to buy my vehicles used. That means someone else owned it before me. And like my vehicles to be fuel-efficient. So, used, cheap price to buy it, fuel-efficient, and reliable. Those are the words would use for the vehicles like. Judit. Hi Bob, have you ever planned the operation of an airport or helicopter service from your farm? No. Would you make it happen? Would helipad be too expensive to install? So, guess we could have really rich people fly helicopter to the farm to come and see the flowers, but don't plan on doing that. If we did, we would need spot for the helicopter to land. So, Judit, no, not at this time. don't think would do that. and then, "Hi Bob, have you ever thought of going to work by bike? Perhaps it'd be healthier, but more time energy consuming. Thank you for your answer." So, there's two things that prevent me from doing this. Number one, the roads that use to get to work are very, very busy. And I'm not sure it's really safe. Like people drive 100 to 120 km an hour. The speed limit is 80, though. The second thing is from about November till March, it's really cold. don't know if would enjoy being on bike. From Levi, "Hey Bob, from your experience, what separates students who become fluent from those who stay stuck?" Consistency. and then being able to reflect on their own learning. So, there's two things. You have to study every day or at least five or six days week, but you also need to challenge yourself little bit every time. those are the two things that think are very, very helpful. let's see. From Levi again, "What's up, Bob? How important is consistency versus intensity when learning English? saw your short about this." So, think consistency is key in everything. But if you Let me put it this way. If you tried to lift 1,000 lb every day and failed, so you have consistency, but it's the wrong level of intensity. You should be lifting 10 lb every day, and then eventually 12 lb, and then eventually 15 lb. So, you do have to make sure that your consistency is done doing something that is very, very valuable. Let me just check something here for sec. Okay, I'm going to Yeah, we got couple more. Let me see here. From Levi, "Hey Bob, are there certain transportation-related words that learners understand but rarely use correctly in real conversations?" No, would say of the 30 words I'm teaching today, most people use these regularly and correctly. Like when use the word roomy or spacious. your new van's very spacious." the bus is very convenient. just moved to Toronto and the bus is very convenient, but it's always packed. So, wish had bike because it's more nimble." Those are all very, very common. And then, last one from Levi, "Is it more important for learners to build wide vocabulary for transportation or to master small set of words and use them really well?" So, here's the This comes up lot. Number one, you don't need to learn vocabulary so that you always use it, but you do need to learn lot of vocabulary so you understand it. So, would say when teach these 30 words for transportation, you need to understand all of them if an English speaker uses it, but you only need to learn about 10 of them for your own conversation. That's always the tricky part, isn't it? About vocabulary. You need to know lot so you can understand things. From Fritz, "Hi Bob, hope you're doing well. If you were to buy new car, would you prefer to buy an electric car or car with an internal combustion engine?" Fritz. So, first of all, Fritz, that is great sentence. Let me read it again. "If you were to buy new car, would you prefer to buy an electric car or car with an internal combustion engine?" First of all, grammatically perfect. 100% on the sentence. challenging sentence to write for English learners. So, nice job. Good job. so, Jen and have talked about this. We need van th- with an internal combustion engine, van that you put gas in or petrol, in order to bring flowers to market. But think I'm getting closer to maybe getting an electric vehicle in few years to drive to work every day because it's very short distance. It's about 16 km to work. so that's that's where we're at. would probably say both at this point. We wouldn't be able to use an electric vehicle for flower deliveries. That would be tricky at this time. From Christian, why put the user in timeout? So the user was posting multiple times in the chat. So if in the chat someone posts over and over again, sometimes give them timeout. Let me get sip of water. Let's see here. Know that is here. Hi Know That, good to see you. Hi to Ryan. Birgit is here as well, good to see you. Some familiar names in the chat. Hope you're all having good time. let's see here. Somebody gave gift membership. So Ryan sent 10 gift memberships to Mito, Hakan, Alex, Ammon, Buak, Boonie, April. Got to be careful when say some names here. Leon, June, and Natalie. So thank you Raiden Ryan for giving Thanks Ryan Caden for giving those gift memberships out. Sorry, missed that. usually shout that out when see it, but thank you. All of you who got gift membership, if you visit the post section of this YouTube channel, you can see all of the member posts now. And hi to John Wedge as well, good to see you. okay. Remember, if you have question, please submit it using the form as sometimes answer member questions in the chat, but don't usually answer all the questions. It just gets too overwhelming. From Ali, can you give me some idioms about transport in Canadian Canadian accents in English? I'm from Azerbaijan. can't think of any off the top of my head, but when think about transportation, the early bird gets the worm is what think. Like if you are on time, you will most likely get nice seat on the bus or the train. that's the first one that can get. sometimes we say when someone misses the boat, it means they like tried to get on the early train, but missed the boat. So even though the train isn't boat, you could still use that phrase to describe that situation. let's see. From Takagero, hello dear Teacher Bob. few weeks ago, you done you've done lesson from an airport, but didn't fly anywhere. Did Preply ask you to do lesson exactly from an airport? No. So Preply likes to sponsor video about every other month, sometimes every month, and very much appreciate it. But when they do that, have list of English lesson ideas that consider like gold standard ideas. and so usually use one of those because they're giving me some money to help pay for the video, and want the video to do really well. And so don't want to do, you know, very simple video or quick and easy video. So when do sponsored video, try to do something that's little more special, little harder to do because it's hard to go to public place. So and do have another one coming up in few weeks that I'm going to again do in public place. So that's the reason. They don't tell me where to go. In fact, they don't they just say, "Hey, can you do sponsored video and mention Preply?" And so don't mind doing that because they're very generous, and it's very helpful to keep my channel alive and running. Okay, should we get back to the lesson? We should. If you still have questions, please put them in the form, and will be happy to answer them. Also, if you don't mind giving thumbs up, would appreciate it if you can find the spot below the video. think that would be very very helpful for me and the channel. Here we go. Dependable. Can be trusted to work consistently over time. So you might be wondering, what's the difference between dependable and reliable? They're pretty much the same thing. when you say car is dependable, it means it works when you turn the key all the time. If you say, you know, public transit is very dependable here in the city. It means that when you go to get on the bus, the bus comes on time. When you go to take the train, the train comes on time and leaves on time. It's very dependable. It's very trust reliable. So can be trusted to work consistently over time. High speed. Able to travel very quickly. If you're wondering where the idea for this lesson came, we are supposed to be building high-speed train in Ontario, Canada that's going to run from think Montreal to Ottawa to start, and then it will expand. really hope this does happen. I'm always jealous of France and Japan and Spain and all these countries that have high-speed trains. So we do have train system. Jen and can take the train from where we close to where we live to Toronto, but the train only goes about 70 or 80 km per hour. high-speed train goes 150 to 300 km per hour. Like high-speed train is very very fast. And so am really looking forward to that. It will be in 10 years. think it takes while to build these things, but high-speed able to travel very quickly. Affordable. Does not cost lot of money to buy or use. Can't quite remember what kind of car this is. think it's Nissan Versa. think that's the name. I'm not car expert, but this is an affordable car. It's somewhat small. It's probably really fuel-efficient because it has small engine. this is not luxury vehicle. This does not cost lot of money to buy or use. So notice there's two parts to this, you know? If you're going to buy an affordable vehicle, it will be cheap to buy it, but it will also be cheap in that sense that it won't use lot of gas. So affordable does not cost lot of money to buy or use. Outdated. Looks old and uses older technology. Now, would not say this is useless, but think it is outdated. We don't have these old-style streetcars anymore. Usually they're bigger and longer, and they're more sleek, like they're little more aerodynamic. But when something is outdated, it looks old and uses older technology. would say this is probably 50 to 100 years old, and it's little bit outdated, but if you were somewhere as tourist, this would be fun way to travel in trolley car or streetcar. There's variety of names. Outdated. Looks old and uses older technology. Safe. Protects passengers and reduces risk of harm. So don't know if there's truth to this, but we have been told that Volvo makes extremely safe vehicles. When was younger, there was veterinarian who visited our farm who drove Volvo, and he talked at length about how safe Volvo was, that it was one of the safest vehicles. So it's designed to keep passengers safe. Of course, it'll have all of the normal things like seat belts and airbags, but it might also have more advanced features. Even the design of the vehicle might just be better in the in the sense that if you got in an accident, you would be better protected. So safe protects passengers and reduces risk of harm. Expensive. So here we have something that costs lot of money. This is vehicle that would never buy, although do like the color orange. That is pretty nice-looking car, but it is expensive. It costs lot of money. Let me put it this way. If sold everything own, don't think could buy this car. Maybe No, don't think could. If sold the farm. The problem is have debt. So if sold everything owned, still would have to pay off my debt. Like have loan from the bank that used to buy the farm, which is called mortgage. So this is not going to happen. might buy an orange minivan someday. We'll see. But there you go. Expensive. Costs lot of money. Cheap. This is not my vehicle, but do own one exactly like this. Cheap. Costs very little money. So my Chev Uplander, Chevrolet, Chevy Uplander. by the way, there's car company called Chevrolet, and we sometimes just call it Chev or Chevy. bought this month after had heart surgery for very little money. think it was only $5,000 to buy this van, which might sound like lot, but in Canada, that's pretty cheap. and think it only had 60,000 km on it or 80,000 km. still consider this one of the best vehicles ever bought. It was very reliable. Still is. and it was cheap. So, it costs very little money. So, very affordable, very cheap. one of my favorite vehicles. Kind of roomy. Like not super spacious inside, but definitely not too bad. But cheap, costs very little money. Brand new. So, have never bought brand new vehicle. So, brand new means has not had previous owner, new. So, the difference between new and brand new, it means the same thing. But think when we want to emphasize, we want to make it sound really cool, we would say brand new. bought brand new computer. bought brand new car. bought brand new 2026 minivan. So, again, brand new has not had previous owner, new. So, they built this van at the car factory. And then, if was to buy it, it would be brand new. so, yeah, I've never bought brand new vehicle. know friend of mine buys brand new vehicles all the time. But think he makes lot more money than me. usually buy used vehicles. So, used vehicle has been owned before by someone. So, you can see the sign says used cars and trucks. So, if had lots of money, would buy brand new minivan. But because don't, because I'm just normal person with normal life, usually buy used. So, go to the local car lot and look at all of the used vehicles that are there and pick out something that think Jen and will like, and we test drive it. So, usually will drive the vehicle home and then Jen will get in and we'll drive it around, and then will drop Jen back off at the farm and bring it back to the used car dealer. And then will decide if we want to buy it. So, used has been owned before by someone. Hey, let's do members only chat. And if you are new here, don't leave because will resume the lesson in just bit. but first, need to turn on members only chat. If you are member of the channel, you will be able to Why can never remember where this is? There we go. Members, say. If you are member of the channel, you will be able to ask questions directly in the chat. Let me explain memberships for all of you. memberships are where you give small amount of money every month, and then you get some extra things. You get lesson plan on Monday, which gives you some ideas for things you can do during the week to improve your English. It comes out on the posts section as members only post on this YouTube channel. You also get video called Wednesdays with Bob every Wednesday, which is short 3-minute video where talk about variety things of things in life. And even though it's not traditional English lesson, it does have perfect subtitles, word for word, and the transcript is in the description below that video. So, you can you get some real life materials for English listening practice. And then, of course, you get crown by your name in the chat. you get your name in green in the chat, and you get to participate in members only chat. So, that's really fun. John Wedge in the chat says, "Hey, don't forget to give thumbs up. This will be my first advice. Haha." Know That says, "Hey Bob, what are your plans for today and this weekend, Bob?" got anything special planned for the end of your spring break? Thanks, sir. So, do have to am working for the weekend. that's kind of little phrase in English. do have to go tomorrow, and do have to make video lesson, but not for this coming Tuesday. It will be for the Tuesday after. And then do have to make video for this coming Tuesday as well. So, I'm going to try and get that work done tomorrow on Saturday. the week didn't turn out as nicely as we had hoped for farm work. It's been cold and snowy. There was one day where it got little bit warm, but now it's kind of gross again. So, nothing special. Today am going shopping, though. I'm going to the mall. need new pair of running shoes. think I've worn mine out. Okay, continuing from the chat. Ray Ryan, who is member now. Thanks, Ryan. thought that she he was from my country. Probably having conversation with someone else. Mo says, wish, but no, I'm just interested in Brazilian Portuguese. Still haven't decided whether should learn it for real." Mo's going to be polyglot. Two three languages now, Mo? Maybe four? Bridget, Bob, have you done something special during your spring break? No. didn't do anything special. Unless you consider this special. am in my mid-50s, and in Canada, when you turn 50, and then when you're in your mid-50s, and when you turn 60, every 5 years, you go to the doctor for something called checkup or physical, or they just want to make sure that everything is good. So, did do that this week. had couple of appointments on Monday and Tuesday. just routine things, blood work and all that kind of stuff. nothing is wrong. Everything's good. but it's routine thing you do, and thought might as well just do it during spring break because have the time. So, nothing really special, but yeah. Let's see. John's John Wedge says, "Yeah, I'm I'm the official guy to ask for thumbs up." And do appreciate it, John. John has probably helped to grow this channel as much as anybody. and then Know That saying to John, "That's good to hear. So far, so good on my end. Thanks for asking." Younes says, "I'm helpful for your video." So, am glad my videos are helpful. have very much enjoyed doing this for the last 9 and bit years, and am going to continue doing it. from Ryan, having conversation with Mo. I'm going to try and sort through these. Sai Sandy, about this week's glance. never got speed or red light ticket when drive, but did get red light ticket when was on foot because crossed the street while it was r- We don't have that in Canada. You can get red light ticket. But the they took all the speed cameras down. The government said they're not allowed anymore. But don't think you can get ticket here for walking when you're not supposed to. So, yeah. So, Sai Sandy's referring to the week at glance from Monday, where talked about cameras and there was whole little bit on surveillance and those kinds of things. Know That says, "If my memory serves me right, Bob." Great use of the phrase, by the way. If my memory serves me right, Bob. "You once mentioned that the school buses don't stop near your house anymore. Do you know why that decision was made back then?" There's no real kids on our road. So, I'm not sure what you might be referring to, but will say this. School buses used to stop at every house, and now some kids have to walk and gather at one house in order to get picked up. Mo says, "But there's good number of Brazilians here. Maybe Bob needs to start handing out some bam casados in these live streams." So, there was will say this once say this about Brazilians. There was this really funny moment early in my live streaming career, where there were lot of Brazilians in the channel, and then there were lot of people from another country that won't name, and there was this huge argument in the chat about football, soccer football, whatever you want to call it. and that's when started to get moderators. If you remember back when had moderators in the chat. but yeah, that was that was one of my first experiences with having people argue in the chat. But they were arguing in English, so thought that was good. let's see that. Let's see here. Pedro says, was doing chores, but I'm back again." Good to have you back. Ryan says, teach at school called Full English in Brazil and often use your videos in class." Awesome. "Some of my Brazilian students here might be from my classes." Could be. appreciate that you're doing that. try to make sure all of my lessons are safe to use in school. do not have any content that would be you know, not allowed in classroom. So, I'm glad that you're using it. Know That, Bob, is there special place on your farm or in your house that holds the most childhood memories for you? Only if you don't mind sharing. So, the barn is very special to me. It is very old building, but farm kids, when the weather is bad, they play in the barn. So, we have in the up upper part of the barn is where all the hay was. So, have very good memories of building forts, building swings. We had large rope from the ceiling of the barn, and you could swing on the rope. So, would say that's very special place for me. The same place where hope to start doing archery again. give me 1 sec here. Okay, I'm back. Let me just make sure that that that went smoothly there. Yeah, the hay mow. That's what we call it. Okay, so Mo says, like this this comment. Mo says, "Wow, that's awesome. guess no more chopping down speed cameras in your area. Yep, the speed camera vigilantes no longer have to remove the speed cameras. So, we had cameras that would give speeding tickets and people would chop them down. Like they would come with saw in the night and cut the metal pole. let's see here. Ryan says they love your classes, Bob. They say it's so easy to understand. am happy to hear that. Slice Andy says, was stopped by police. Perhaps they should be more pedestrian friendly." Yes, it's always nice when police are bit more pedestrian friendly. Okay, I'm going to get question up on the screen here. We'll get back to the lesson in about 2 minutes. I'll keep an eye on the chat. Unsal says, "Hi, Mr. Bob. How common is public transportation where you live? What do people mostly use and is there any type you wish was nearby? You're awesome, thanks." So, in my area buses are the most common. But as you get closer to the city, would say the GO train is very common. If you want to go to the city of Toronto, we often take the GO train. And once you're in Toronto, usually see lot of buses. There are lot of streetcars. There is subway in Toronto as well. And then lot of people use Uber or other ride-share service services. Okay, in the chat, let me just scroll back in the chat. want to make sure didn't miss any There's lot going on in the chat. Maybe instead I'll just say if missed your post in the chat as member, I'm sorry. just yell it out again cuz it's hard to scroll back. let's see here. Ryan, "Bob, what was the most amount spent to make single video like the one about food?" like money-wise, about $30. Time-wise, about 15 hours probably on that video. cuz you can spend time or money, right? So, that's the answer. Wanda, "Hi, Teacher Bob. Here in Brazil, we also use alcohol as fuel. Do you have this possibility in your country?" No, you generally buy your fuel from the gas station. No that Okay, didn't know they stopped at every house. thought it'd always been place where students gathered to wait for the bus. Thanks for shedding some more light on it. No problem. John Wedge, "Speak fast, Bob, for Ryan's students to see how it is in real life." was trying to, but it was hard to do. let's see. Freddy Wolf says, "In France, if you saw any speed camera, you can get 5 years vacation in the shade." like if you saw it down. Yes. And it's not real vacation. That's he's referring to prison, believe. No that Speaking of memories from the past, is there place, area, or even building in your town that gives you blast from the past? mean besides the famous bridge. Thanks for answering my questions." That bridge is good example because my grandparents lived close to that bridge. So, that kind of is blast from the past for me all the time. when I'm in that area of town, have very fond memories of my grandparents and all of that. Okay, so I'm going to turn off members only chat here. Give me sec. We'll go back to subscribers. I'm going to have sip of water and I'm going to finish the lesson and then will do all the questions in the queue once the lesson is done. So, let me just do that. Finish off the lesson here and then we will High performance. Built for speed, power, and good handling. So, when you have high performance car, it's probably not fuel efficient. But it's probably lot of fun to drive. So, think this is Corvette. It's an American sports car and it is high performance car. The engine produces lot of horsepower. The engine has lot of power. The car is built to go fast. It's built for speed. And when they say good handling, they mean if you turn quickly while going really fast, it doesn't start sliding. It holds or grips the road. So, high performance are built for speed, power, and good handling. That is nice looking car, by the way. Most high performance cars also look really, really cool. Heavy duty. Do you like the way said that? Heavy duty. Made for tough work conditions. So, this is large Ford pickup truck pulling big load of round bales of hay. This is heavy duty pickup truck. This is not normal pickup truck. Let me make it bigger again. You can see how it has what we call dualies on the back. That means there's two tires beside each other. It's also just called duals, but this truck is heavy duty truck made for tough work conditions. It probably has also lot of horsepower. The engine produces lot of power, but not so the truck can go fast like sports car. Instead, so the truck can do work. It can pull trailer. It can do things that this car would never be able to do. So, heavy duty made for tough work and work conditions. you can probably put lot in the back of this truck as well. It would probably do good job. Compact. Small in size and easy to park or drive. So, this is small little compact car. compact car usually only has two doors. It might only be made for two people. but I'm pretty sure it's little bit cramped inside. think if you were taller, like if you were 6 ft tall or taller, don't know what that is in centimeters, sorry. You probably would find this car little cramped. But compact. Small in size and easy to park or drive. Classic. So, in North America, in Canada and in the United States, if you say classic car, you usually mean car from the '60s or '70s. This is Ford Mustang probably from the late '60s, maybe early '70s. An older vehicle valued for its style and history. You might also call this muscle car. So, this is muscle, right? Your bicep. We in North America sometimes call these muscle cars because they are very, very strong and powerful as well. But if you had car from 1968, if you had 1968 Ford Mustang, it would be considered classic car. An older vehicle valued for its style and history. By the way, fun fact, my uncle, actually two of my uncles, when they were like 19 or 20, had Ford Mustangs. That must have been really, really cool back then. Autonomous. Can drive itself without human driver. So, these are becoming more and more common. have not seen an autonomous vehicle yet. Let me say that one more time. Autonomous. It's new word for me as well. knew this word, but it wasn't used regularly until 1 or 2 years ago when they started to have news articles about autonomous vehicles. So, an autonomous vehicle can drive itself without human driver. You'll see that it has lots of sensors and cameras on it so that it can see the world around it. So, that you could it can see people and the road and obstacles and then it can drive itself. So, autonomous. Can drive itself without human driver. Daily driver. So, this is an informal term that we use in English for vehicle used for everyday travel. So, if someone says to you, you drive to work. What's your daily driver?" would say, "Well, mine is 2015 Ford Escape." This is my daily driver. This is the car that drive to work every day. Sometimes people have used this term to talk about other things. They might say, what phone is your daily driver?" And would say, mine is Google Pixel phone." You can see the Google Pixel here. Someone else might say, for phone, my daily driver is an iPhone." So, daily driver normally you're talking about vehicle used for everyday travel. Rickety. Weak and unstable or unlikely to or likely to break, sorry. Rickety. That's fun word to say. This vehicle certainly looks rickety. It looks weak. It looks unstable and likely to break. It's definitely banged up. Like it has dents in it. It looks like like parts of it might fall off. If ordered an Uber and the driver showed up in this rickety vehicle, would be little bit concerned about whether it would get me to my destination. So, rickety. Weak and unstable or likely to break. Economical. Inexpensive to run and maintain. So, an affordable car from earlier would be an economical car. So, cheap car might not be economical. cheap car might be rickety and it might break. But an economical car would be inexpensive to run and maintain. If you had this car, this is little Toyota again, isn't it? My guess is it's very economical. It probably doesn't need to be fixed lot. It's probably well-built. And more importantly, it probably doesn't use very much gas when you are driving it. So, economical. Another fun word to say. Rickety. economical, inexpensive to run and maintain. Versatile, can be used for many different purposes. So, one of the reasons why like owning minivan is it's very versatile. If you put all the seats down in minivan, you can put an entire sheet of what we call plywood in the back. So, this is 4 by 8 sheet of plywood. You're learning little bit about wood as well. It's 4 ft wide and 8 ft long. That is standard size for piece of plywood in Ontario, Canada and in North America. And it fits in the back of most minivans if you have all the seats down. So, minivan is very very versatile. Can be used for many different purposes. pickup truck is also very versatile. could use pickup truck as my daily driver. could have pickup truck and drive it to work. could use it to commute to work and back, but could also use it to help my cousin move on the weekend. It's very very versatile. So, versatile can be used for many different purposes. Hey, that's the formal end of the lesson, but do have about 15 questions to answer yet. So, stick around. Let's do that next. Let me have sip of water. Mode says, "People have been ranting about autonomous self-driving cars since 2010 like it's reality. It's now 2026 and they're still not fully out." That's true. have seen like there's some places in the US where they have Waymo where they drive themselves. Let's see. Justina says, "When will see or hear something about cosmetics or something for women?" Well, this lesson was not just for men. This is all common vocabulary, but will put that on the list. And as much as don't know lot about mascara or lipstick or anything like that, will see if could do lesson about it. Ryan says, "There's lot of Brazilians in here. I've counted 10 already." That doesn't surprise me. One of the reasons why is because the time zone is the same as me. Pedro says, "Classic cars are very nice." And then Ryan, "Did he show an example of electric car? don't remember." didn't want to show types of cars. So, was little wasn't sure what to do with EV. So, we would call that kind of car an EV or electric vehicle. But, might do lesson on that in the future. Okay, let's get question on the screen. From Unsal. Here we go. With the rise in fuel prices, there've been increases in shipping costs, food prices, utility bills, etc. What idioms, verbs, and emotions would you use to talk about this? So, the other day would use the phrase pulling my hair out. The other day drove by gas station and gas was $1.49 liter. And thought, "Wow, that's expensive." And needed gas, but didn't stop in. And then when got to my town, gas was $1.60 liter. So, was pulling my hair out. When you're pulling your hair out, it means you're annoyed or worried or yeah, just would say annoyed. but yeah, the things are getting expensive. It's not very nice at all. from Unabi. Hi Mr. Bob, what do you think about electric cars or EVs? EV, electric vehicle. Are they really our future of transportation, especially considering constant rising of the gas prices? So, some people have strong opinions about electric vehicles. just think we will probably all have electric vehicles in 50 years. And think we are going to as the the world is going to just slowly transition away from oil. don't think it's going to go as fast as some people want it to. I'm not ready to buy an electric vehicle as my main vehicle. But, as said before, could see us owning, you know, an internal combustion engine vehicle and an EV. But, think we're just in transition. think in 30 to 50 years, probably most vehicles will be electric. Mode the OG, the real mode. Hey Mr. Bob, why don't you have sip of water and relax bit? You seem little flustered today even though it's spring break. Thanks for your time, sir. don't know if flustered is the flustered the is the right word. think I'm trying to put this into words nicely. Yeah, maybe I'm little flustered, but not for any other reason. Nothing serious. That's what would say. from No that. Here we go. Hello Bob, how many vehicles have you owned in your life if you happen to know off the top of your head? And which one was the most reliable? Thanks in advance, Bob. So, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. think I'm on my ninth vehicle probably, maybe 10th. Which one was the most reliable? have had good luck with vehicles. Almost every vehicle own, have keep I'm keep them well maintained as mentioned before. So, most have been quite reliable. Unsal. When renting car, what expressions would you use to tell the rental company what you need? Thanks lot, you're awesome. would probably try to rent something that's affordable and fuel-efficient. Those would be the two things would probably say. wouldn't worry about whether it's reliable because if I'm renting car, I'm assuming it is reliable, that it's well maintained and reliable. But, would want something that uses very little gas. would also want something that's relatively new. But, here in Canada, if you rent car, they're usually new cars. They're only year or two old. So, McKenna. Morning Bob, what do you think about being fluent in English but not having good pronunciation? think the best thing to do is to find someone to help you reduce your accent. There are English tutors who specialize in accent reduction. There is link below this video to place called Preply where you could find tutor to help you with exactly that. Just do search for someone who helps with accent reduction. From Elena. Hi Bob, could you please describe the metro subway in Toronto? Is it convenient? Do you have any elevators or just escalators? What's the average waiting time? So, things in Ontario, Canada in the city of Toronto usually run on time. So, if you arrive in Toronto, you can take the GO train which goes to other parts of the city that are far away. You can take the subway which is below the city and will take you to places in the city. you can also there's something called the TTC. think it's the Toronto Transit Commission and they have electric streetcars or light rail, we sometimes call it. and then of course there's also buses. Everything's pretty timely for sure. From Ryan. What's up? from Levi. What's up, Bob? When did you stop translating and start understanding French naturally? So, this happened kind of twice in my life. When was studying French in university, by my third or fourth year, started to be able to function in my French classes fully in French. But then kind of lost it. am little bit older. don't know if you noticed that. And then regained that skill about eight or nine years ago. started watching all of my TV shows in French. did the entire Duolingo tree from top to bottom. met with French tutor that found on Preply, by the way. That's why like Preply so much. named Raina and she helped me lot with getting back into that state. but it was there was time where was watching French TV show and watched almost half the show and then realized wasn't even was fully understanding everything that was being said as if it was English. So, that was really cool. from Lehua. Hi Bob, have you ever driven an EV? What is your opinion of having an EV compared to having fuel car? Thanks. I've ridden in several EVs. they're pretty cool. like the idea that it's just an electric motor. By the way, one of the most efficient and reliable things that humans have invented is the electric motor. So, internal combustion engine will eventually break. An electric motor will run for years before breaking. We have some water pumps on our farm where the electric motor is 30 or 40 years old and it still works. So, like the idea and the reliability of electric vehicles. but think Canada there's two things that make it challenging. One, as mentioned earlier, could drive an EV back and forth to work. could drive an electric vehicle back and forth to work. But, if we wanted to visit Jen's parents, we can't it's hard to drive that far. So, distance is an issue still in Canada for some people. and then the second thing is winter. Winter greatly reduces the range of an electric vehicle. So, think they have to work on that little bit more. from Artem. Hi Bob, how many Canadian words in your vocabulary? mean words that Americans never use or even making fun of it. Not lot. There are some. know use the phrase tough sledding sometimes when you go snowmobiling or sledding in Canada. we use some of those words to create new phrases. but there's not lot. From Ryan Levi. Random question Bob, what are your PC specs and are you tech enthusiast? am tech enthusiast. Both my computers are relatively old. The laptop I'm using for this is 5 years old and my computer over here is 6 or 7 years old. Might even be older. And know Hafiz once gave me super chat to for the new computer fund, but hope to replace that computer this summer. that computer is specked for gaming. So it has like an Nvidia card in it, an RTX 2060 think. No, don't quote me on that. don't don't quote me on numbers off the top of my head. But can play video games on there quite comfortably. Christian says So let me get this on the screen. sorry, I'm feeling exhausted today. Can you do something to wake me up? No, can do this. don't know if that don't know if that scared you little bit. It's Bob's jump scare where you could just move that my hand up. Okay, from the chat mode says, you know, there's French idiom that goes little by little the bird builds its nest. Which means the same as one step at time. that's cool. That's very cool. Okay, Let's see. From Know That. What is your favorite type of public transportation? The one you've always enjoyed traveling with Bob. heartfelt thank you as always. love taking the train to Toronto. One of the reasons there's two reasons actually. There's probably more. Number one, if you drive car to Toronto you will end up in traffic jam every time. It that's just what will happen. but if you take the train, you just drive 70 80 km/h all the way there. with few stops. and then number two, if go with Jen and couple kids, you can sit facing each other and have conversations. So love the GO train. love taking the train to Toronto. From Hasham. Hi Bob sir, is that van you shown yours? So this van is not mine but own this exact van. That is van that own. Yes. So not that it's it's from the internet the picture, but do own van exactly like that. Hasham. What's Bob sir's dream car? So my dream car, let's go back to this. If had choice would be this, brand new minivan. would love brand new minivan. That would be very very cool. I'm still in the stage of life where minivan is very very handy. From Kusuo, excuse me teacher Bob, are used and second hand synonyms which are more commonly used in are which are more commonly used in English? So yes but there's few things you need to know. Usually when you buy vehicle, we say used. Like he bought used car. You could say second hand car but we more often use second hand to talk about clothing or furniture. Like got second hand couch. got second hand clothing. So would say used is for vehicles, second hand is more for clothing and other things. Although if you mix them up, no one is going to get annoyed. Pedro Santos, hi Bob, what do you think about self driving cars? Are they popular in Canada? haven't seen lot of them yet. My worry is how well will self driving cars handle snow and ice? So there's certain skill to driving on snow and ice. when you're driving on something slippery. So yes, it's that's my worry. In the chat Ryan says, I'm waiting for another GeoGuessr live stream. When could it happen again? Possibly this weekend. was going to do one last weekend, but wasn't really up for it. Minosmel says, since you're talking about cars, how's the gas price in Canada now? Has it changed? It is $1.60 Canadian per liter. Remember about month ago it was $1.20. So it's definitely higher. mode says, I'm surprised that farmer like Bob would choose minivan over pickup truck. Well, imagine flowers in the back of pickup truck in the wind. This will wake someone up. and then imagine flower in minivan. That's really the difference mode. But man, pickup truck would be nice. That would be really nice. did have pickup truck many many years ago. From Hobart. Hello teacher Bob, the cheap and reliable car is better for most person most people. Little fix there. Is there any new brand car in Canada? For example, the Chinese brand BYD and GWM. There's no new brands in Canada, but the Canadian government and the Chinese government came up with an agreement where we might see some newer Chinese electric vehicles in the future. We'll have to see. I'm curious to see what they're like. From Enebi. I'm not sure if someone's hasn't asked this yet, but how does car insurance function in Canada? Is it expensive? Thanks Bob. So pay about $400 month for car insurance. $400 month. You'll have to do the conversion. That's for myself, my wife and three of my children and that's insurance for three vehicles. Now do have clean driving record. Well, it's not perfectly clean. did get speeding ticket two or three years ago. and that helps keep your insurance low. If you get lot of speeding tickets your insurance goes up. And that protects me in the in case of an accident. Judit says Hi Bob, is there any chance for GeoGuessr this weekend? Yes, possibly Sunday night. But we'll see. I'm not sure. why don't you guys tell me in the chat what's the best time of day for GeoGuessr? And we're going to get all different times in Eastern Standard Time if possible. Mikailo. Hi sir, what was your preferences when you chosen your own car and why is it so? So like car that is cheap, like affordable. also like car that wanted it to be fuel efficient because was driving the van to work and it was using lot of gas. and then wanted few features. wanted backup camera and wanted heated seats. So those were two things that really really wanted. Austin's asking about idioms. can't think of any off the top of my head. How's everything going Bob? Are there any idioms or slang related to cars and transportation and driving? Do you know any car or transportation idioms or slang? would need to do whole lesson on that. because off the top of my head I'm trying to can't really think of any. Last question. Abdul says, how to learn English perfectly? Practice, practice, practice. Make sure you're practicing your reading, writing, listening and speaking. Make sure you are constantly learning new vocabulary and make sure you are learning some grammar at some time. Enebi says Have to get back to work. Thanks for this really useful lesson Mr. Bob. Bye. No problem. Yes, we're done think. I'm just going to scroll back. Mikailo says, what is insurance that? So insurance is money you pay so that if you get in an accident the the insurance company pays to fix all the cars and take care of people if they were hurt. That's what insurance is. okay. think I'm going to wrap this up. Know That says, thanks for the great lesson and your time Bob. Wishing you and your family wonderful Friday and great weekend. Take good care of yourselves. Thanks again for answering my questions. No problem. Nuncel says, thanks for the lesson. By the way, was watching the live stream from both my accounts and my sister's account at the same time. So technically we were watching twice, killing two birds with one stone. There you go. there were so many new terms for me from Wilma. Thank you very much teacher Bob. No problem. Birgit says, bye. Bye to Birgit, Sai Sandy, Ralph Pedro, Sichen, Ryan. Good to see you Ryan. chatting it up as new member. Tolik says, thanks Bob. Bye to Uliana. Mode says, thanks for the awesome lesson. Warden of the Warden of the North. let's see here. Bye to Wanda, Sai Sandy, Know That, Aerosmith and all of you. Yeah. Sorry, I'm just kind of rolling it all into one there think. this live stream went little longer than expected. Maybe that's why seemed little Let's see. Bob done donuts using his car back in the states. Yes, definitely Hafiz. have done that. Anyways, thanks for watching everyone. few things before you go. Number one this lesson will come out in shorter version in couple days. will remove all of the questions and you'll end up with 20 to 25 minute pure lesson on describing cars and transportation. So look for that and you should rewatch it. You should at least listen to it or at least rewatch the parts that you didn't understand. It will have pretty good AI generated subtitles which can help you sometimes understand what was being said. Anyways you're all awesome. Thank you so much for watching. Don't forget to consider becoming member if you haven't yet. There is join button you can click to get some more information. And once again, thank you to all of you who are members, who help me do this as job. It's kind of fun to earn part of my living as English teacher here on YouTube. Anyways, have great day everyone. Have great weekend. New video coming out Tuesday and I'll see you next Friday with live lesson. But think we probably will do GeoGuessr on Sunday night. So maybe I'll see you then. I'll schedule it. Bye.
