Simile, metaphor, personification. Three figures of speech that almost every English student confuses with each other. In the next few minutes, I'm going to fix that confusion forever. First, simile. simile compares two different things using the connecting words, for example, like or as. The keyword here is using connecting word. It never makes direct comparison. It always signals the comparison with like or as. Her smile is like sunshine. He's as brave as lion. See the words like and as? That is your signal that it is simile. Quick rule. If you see like or as in comparison or another connecting word, it is simile, simple as that. Second, metaphor. metaphor also compares two things, but here's the difference. It makes direct comparison, no connecting word. It simply says that one thing is another thing. Bold and direct, no connecting word is needed. Life is journey. Time is money. The world is stage, Shakespeare. No like, no as, just direct bold statement. That is metaphor. Here's the fastest way to remember the difference. Simile says, "She's like storm." Metaphor says, "She is storm." Remove like or as and simile becomes metaphor. That's all. Third, personification. This one is different from both simile and metaphor. Personification gives human qualities, actions, or emotions to non-human things, like animals, objects, or ideas. It does not compare two things. It gives something that is not human the ability to act, feel, or think like human. The sun smiled down on us. The wind whispered through the trees. Time flies. Opportunity knocked on his door. In every one of these, something that is not human is doing something only human can do. Smiling, whispering, flying, knocking, that's personification. Quick rule. Ask yourself, is something non-human acting, feeling, or thinking like human? If yes, that's personification. Now, let me put all three side by side so the differences are crystal clear. Simile compares using like or as. Metaphor compares directly. Personification gives human qualities to non-human things. The signal for simile is the word like or as or any other connecting word. The signal for metaphor is direct is or statement. The signal for personification is non-human thing performing human action. For example, "She's like storm." Simile. "She is storm." Metaphor. "The storm screamed through the night." Personification. So, to summarize, simile compares with connecting words, for example, like or as. Metaphor compares directly with no connecting word. And personification gives human qualities to something that is not human. Three different tools, three different jobs. Now you know exactly which is which.
