welcome back as we continue to talk about the Practical Guide to zakat the obligatory charity in Islam in this video we're going to talk about the zakat due on agriculture and then we're going to continue talking about farm animals honey and minerals and ORS let's refresh our definitions of NIS and Sh nisab is threshold after which zakat becomes obligatory and Shar is the proportion and the percentage of the wealth or the commodity that needs to be given as zakat so keeping those in mind let's look at some of the verses that tell us how big blessing this says that Allah has given us so much risk from the Earth itself Allah subhana says by the and he Allah it is who cause Gardens to grow both that are supported and those that are not supported like things that you have to put support for or they hang on trees and and the ones that grow by themselves without any support and palm trees and crops of different kinds of food and olives and pomegranates similar and dissimilar some of them within one type of fruit or within one type of crop you might see so many variety within one category Subhan Allah then Allah says eat from it whenever it gives its fruit and give its due share the right on the day of harvest this is the command for giving zakat and giving the due on the day of harvest for all the agricultural crops and and the Harvest that we obtain and then Allah says and do not be excessively wasteful indeed Allah does not like those who are wasteful so what is the nisab when it comes to agriculture produce the nisab for agriculture produce is Five this is the terminology used by Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam that once it crosses this limit then it becomes due so how much is five it's similar to 300 which is approximately equal to about 650 to 675 kilog so if your produce is of this much weight which is 650 or 675 kg then this is you have reached level of nisab and on that commodity on that crop you have to give zakat now each type of crop has to reach its level of nisab separately like wheat and barley will have to reach the threshold level separately the grains or the pulses have to reach the nisab level separately so they all will be considered separate when you are calculating have the reach the level of nisab or not so you won't lump all of them together but rather separate them out in each of those types the sharah over here is depending on how much effort money and resources you have to put in for the agriculture Subhan Allah Allah subh knows us so well and knows us through and through so the ruling over here is that if the land is cultivated by natural water the water comes from the sky there is natural stream over there and you didn't have to do much more to create artificial water supply or create your own water supply or for irrigation then for naturally irrigated crops the propostion of zakat the sharah is 10% and if you have to put in the resources and you have to irrigate it artificially and make arrangements for its irrigation for water supply and you are spending resources and money on it then the proportion of zat is 5% Subhan Allah Allah knows Us best now what if your crops are irrigated by both like natural water supply and you have to make some arrangements to fill in any gaps or fill in any extra water that is needed for irrigation then in that case scholar say that it is the middle of this between 5 and 10% which would be 7.5% you can always consult your local Scholars or also check your own heart where your heart says is right and give more in the cause of Allah wherever you can inshallah for people who are involved in farming and harvesting they know that it's certain time in the year certain time that certain crop is going to be harvested and all the crops that are of the same category like wheat or corn or whichever it is they're going to harvest it at certain time and when they harvest it that's the day on the day of harvest you will calculate if they have reached and if they have then you give your zakat accordingly now zakat can be given in the form of that crop or it could be given value equal to that amount like you want to give zakat in form of money then you can calculate what's the worth of this much and then give it as money or you can give the crop in itself as zakat this applies to all crops that can be stored for one year or more so this includes all your grains also say wheat rice barley Millet Indian corn beans grams all those things because they can easily be stored for over year so you have to give their zakat on the day of harvest you don't have to wait for one year ra rather this is on the time of harvest now this also applies to dates and grapes the ruling is slightly different but it's very interesting because dates can be preserved for over year you can save dates for long time and they don't go bad similarly Gra graes can be stored for long time turned into raisins and then sold as raisins they can be preserved for long time as well so dates and grapes are also fall in this category where you have to calculate the zakat and and and give their zakat where it does not apply to is other vegetables and fruits now let's say apple watermelon peers and honeydew and pomegranates all these other fruits and similarly vegetables and lettuces broccoli and all other things they don't they don't fall in this category one because it's not one- day thing where you cut them and and get their produce so it's kind of an ongoing process secondly these cannot be preserved and hoarded for long time so maybe you do business in these fruits and vegetables and even if you preserve them in in cold storage or tins or cans but then they become your trade items and the zakat will be paid on trade items in that category not as harvest but as trade item item if you're preserving them for long time and secondly if you are doing business in this the produce comes out you take off your bananas or apples or fruit you sell them and then it goes to your money pool if it's being going into your savings so in that way you're going to pay zakat on it but not on the produce itself Subhan Allah Allah subh knows us very well and Allah knows each and everything that he has created how much things can be preserved when it comes to dates and grapes the method of calculation is bit different because dates and grapes they don't come out on certain date or one day of the year that you will take all of them off rather what will happen is that when the season comes and the tree is tree is growing the fruit people can estimate and say okay looks like this time based on the flowers based on the initial fruit how much of this tree is going to produce this year or for this season or this time and this estimate is called which is an estimation of how much produce is going to happen from this tree in this season and person who has Farms of these trees they can do estimate and they can call someone else who's an expert in doing this to estimate that how much will be the produce in this season and then if that produce is above the level of nisab which we already defined as Five Oak which is about 650 to 675 kg then they will have to give zakat on it based based on the same principle of 10% or 5% now Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam has instructed that when people make this estimate let's say if someone estimates that this Farm or these bunch of trees that have are going to produce 1,000 kog of dates this year okay the instructions for the zakat collectors the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam gave was not to go for the very highend quality or not the very low end rather something in between and if there let's say if there's some nothing in between there's only high and low end then maybe take mix of both so that it's not hurting the person as well nor we are collecting the lowest quality for zakat purposes in an Islamic State it's actually the responsibility of the state to send zakat collectors to different farmers and people who own this farming business to do their calculation for zakat so they need to be an expert in understanding how much is the NIS the Shar and all the rulings around it and they will have to make decisions sometimes over there based on the personal or individual needs or individual scenarios unfortunately we don't have an organized system in many places so the onus falls on the owners themselves so be just in your calculations be just and generous in your giving inshallah Allah will give you more so with that I'll see you in the next video fuka when boy Lake
