How to Add Integers Everything you need to know Prealgebra

everyone in today's video we're going to learn how to add integers all right so our first example is negative 3 plus negative 5. for addition there are only two rules that we have to remember when the signs are the same and when the signs are different so we see that this is an addition problem so we know we have to use one of these two rules always so this is negative and negative these are both the same signs signs are the same they're both negative so we're going to be using this rule here when the signs are the same the rule says to add and then keep the sign the same here's trick look at just the numbers add just the numbers in the bubbles three plus five is eight and then keep the sign the same so these are both negative numbers our answer is going to be the same thing negative so the answer to negative three plus negative five equals negative eight very good let's try another example okay our next example is negative seven plus two okay so we see this is an addition problem so we are going to be using one of these two rules are the signs the same or are the signs different the signs are different this one is negative and this one is positive they're different so we're going to be using the second rule the second rule says to subtract and then keep the sign of the larger number okay so first we're going to subtract once again we're going to look at just the numbers take the bigger number minus the second number 7 minus 2 is five and then keep the sign of the larger number so just looking inside the bubbles is seven bigger or is too bigger seven is bigger so we're going to be using the sign of the larger number so we already said that 7 is the larger number so we're going to be using the sign next to it negative so our answer is negative as well the answer to negative seven plus two equals negative five very good let's do one last example okay so our last example is seven plus negative eight okay so we see this is an addition problem so we know that we're going to use one of these two rules so now we have to ask yourself are the signs different or are the signs the same well these two numbers the signs are different because this one is positive and this one is negative so the signs are different we're going to be using rule number two here this rule says to subtract and then keep the sign of the larger number so first let's subtract always subtract just the numbers so looking inside the bubbles eight and seven take the bigger number once again inside the bubbles take the bigger number minus the smaller number so eight minus seven equals one and then keep the sign of the larger number so just looking inside the bubbles eight is larger than seven right so we have to take the sign of the larger number eight is larger than seven so we're gonna take the sign that's next to the 8 which is negative so our answer is going to be negative as well the answer to 7 plus negative 8 equals negative 1. always remember for addition there are only two rules that you have to know and these two rules work for every single addition of integer problem thank you so much stay tuned for more videos
