Kuwait Flag Review

hi everyone today we'll be reviewing the national flag of Kuwait the review will be done using the five basic principles of flag design is outlined in the book good flag bad flag written by Ted Kaye and published by the north american vexillological association here is quick rundown of the five principles we will review the flag under each principle and give score out of 10 for each at the end we will calculate the average score of the five principles which will give us the overall final score for the flag let's begin the flag consists of horizontal tricolour of green white and red base that the hoist is black trapezoid overall this is pretty simple design and the flag is easy to draw from memory for this principle the flag scores 10 out of 10 the flag was adopted in 1961 it uses what are known as the pan-arab colors and these were first used on the arab revolt flag during World War 1 when Arabs fought against the Ottoman Empire the four colors refer to four Arab dynasties of the past many Arab countries use some or all of these colors the following symbolism also applies to the Kuwaiti flag the black stands for battles and the defeat of enemies the green stands for the fertility of the land the white stands for purity and the deeds of the people the red stands for the swords and the blood of the enemy on them overall the flag has good symbolism for this principle the flag gets ten out of ten the flag has four colors those are black green white and red that's one color more than the recommended maximum of three all four colors are part of the standard set with contrast we have issues with the black border in both the green and red stripe these are all strong colors which contrasts poorly overall for color the flag scores six point five out of ten the flag has no lettering seals or coat of arms for this principle the flag gets ten out of ten the flag bears resemblance to number of other countries due to its color scheme and design it looks little bit like that of Jordan but the difference is in the detail especially Jordan's star mean these two flags are fairly easy to tell apart the flag of Sudan has similar design but the flags have enough differences to make them easy enough to tell apart the flag of Equatorial Guinea has the same three horizontal stripe colors in the same order however their coat of arms and blue triangle make the two flags easy to tell apart all three similar Flags we just looked at have triangles based at the hoist whereas kuwait has trapezoid the trapezoid shape is unique to Kuwait and this helps to make the flag distinctive despite having similarities to number of others for this principle the flag scores 10 out of 10 so now we've reviewed the flag on each of the five principles we're going to add the scores and divide by five to get the average so for the national flag of kuwait we get final score of nine point three out of ten
