Preliminary Research Step One

okay so this lesson is for students who missed our instruction on the preliminary research topics so I'm going to show you where to go and exactly what you're doing so once you're up on the assignment here you're going to click this login we haven't used class Link at the high school we really don't use it much but you do need it for this activity so and what it is is it basically puts all the tools that students tend to use and the teachers tend to use in one place so you're going to log in you're going to sign in with Google it's going to prompt you for permissions and all of those things go ahead and allow those permissions you'll come up to window that looks like this something like this and this is your Vault of different apps so you're going to go to Library resources and then when you pull this up this pulls up all the databases we have for research the one want you to go to is this one here it may not be on the end it depends on how your your page is laying out proquest Serv issues researcher it's got this green icon with the scales so click on that and it shows few issues or topics want you to go up here to Leading issues click on that and click on here all leading issues and then it goes by trending still which shows you kind of what other students across the nation are kind of researching in that don't really care what other people are doing want to look at the topics and decide for myself what I'm interested in and so select to so I'm making sure that get every every topic in kind of an organized way and so then they have all these various topics that you can research some are better than others there's all sorts of reasons that people are researching sometimes they're only writing page long or two page paper we're doing full research project so things like cursive writing that's not going to be re full research topic like we're wanting to do certainly not at the level that you're writing and with the resources we have there is whole bunch so want you one of the things have you doing is just going through and looking the Electoral College looking at at clicking on them want to look at drilling for oil when pull up drilling for oil or any of my topics it gives me the issue it gives the summar is short but there is little more of an extended summary still not very long it's just giving you the basic ideas and details and little bit of information about what the topics about then you're going to scroll down and you have sort of question that is really setting up the issues the the two opposing sides that opinions that people can have so Viewpoint one and it's no one's not preferred over the other but yes opening more lands to oil drill oil well drilling will help reduce our dependency on foreign oil and lower fuel prices or no oil well drilling in these areas will increase potential environmental damage and exacerbate climate change those are not the only sides that you can take in in in in debate on this or in in argument on this persuasive paper but they give you sense of what you could do now they also give you these links and what these links are is individual articles they give you three individual articles you can click on and you can pull up the article this one is from newspaper this is who it's written by and then this is the Cincinnati inquir nurse and the date that it appeared in the newspaper they give you short summary and then they give you the actual article so that you can read it as far as the assignment the next part that you're going to do that's due on Monday you're going to actually in the database here you're going to find three of these these Arenas three of these areas that you find interesting that you might want to research and then you're going to actually list the topic you know if you're wanting death penalty capital punishment you would just list death penalty capital punishment then you would explain one stance on the issue and then the contrasting stance where is that at well you click on it and is capital punishment necessary here's here's Viewpoint here's stance here's another Viewpoint again these are not the only viewpoints that you can take but they give you starting point you'll in your own words you'll explain now do want little more do want little more than just this here want and want it in your own words you'll go on click click click and you'll do your second one list and then use complete sentence that's on the next two the one that says list you don't have to then the third and so you're going to find three potential topics you're not doing three topics you're just looking at potential topics and then you and will decide over the next week or two kind of where you're headed what Topic's best for you so that's kind of what you're doing for our first step in research if you have questions email me come talk to me I'll help you out
