Spring, the sweet spring by Thomas Nashe. to 1601. Spring, the sweet spring is the year's pleasant king. Then blooms each thing, then maids dance in ring. Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing. The palm may make country houses gay. Lambs frisk and play, the shepherds pipe all day, and we hear birds tune this merry lay. The fields breathe sweet, the daisies kiss our feet. Young lovers meet, old wives sunning sit. In every street these tunes our ears do greet. Spring, the sweet spring. Okay, this is poem by Thomas Nashe. Let's see, he's an Elizabethan playwright and poet and he used to write pamphlets as well. let's see, he came from Suffolk from Lowestoft and he went to St. John's College, Cambridge. He seems to have of had knack for being part of various different controversies and he always has seemed seemed to be the center of one one argument or another. this poem itself comes from play that he wrote. but think it's called Summer's Last Will and Testament. And this is actually poem from within the play. So, what's it about? Well, this poem it's it's an ode to spring. It's it's saying describing spring and saying how beautiful spring is. and it's it's describe it's describing spring. Yeah, it's saying how beautiful it is and how spring and nature are related to life and how this season brings joy and happiness. So, sweet spring, the sweet spring is the year's pleasant king. So, he's saying spring is the most beautiful season of the year. Then blooms each thing. So, every all of the flowers start flowering. They start blooming. Then maids dance in ring. think he's thinking about the dancing round the Maypole. Yeah, Okay, so dancing in ring around the the Maypole at the beginning of May is very traditional. Cold doth not sting. So, it's not cold anymore. The cold is gone. The pretty birds do sing. The birds are singing. Cuckoo. Chuck chuck. Tweet tweet twhoo. And here he's copying the sounds of the of the different birds. And think this is this is very nice because it sounds like various different birds. The palm and May make country houses gay. Now, I've been looking and thinking about this first bit quite hard, and think the palm refers to Palm Sunday, which is normally at the beginning of April, is in spring. So, Palm Sunday and May it maybe this is the month. May make country houses gay. So, this is time of year when houses in the country are happy. Yeah, and think the country is lovely at this time of year. Lambs frisk and play. So, lambs jump about and dance. The shepherds pipe all day. So, the shepherds are playing music on their pipes all day. And we hear birds tune this merry lay. So, and we hear the birds singing in this merry lay, in this merry place. Yeah, so the birds are always singing in this lovely place. And here we come again with the sound of the birds. Cuckoo, jug, jug, boo. Weet, tweet, twwoo. The fields breathe sweet. So, the fields smell beautiful. Yeah, the daisies kiss our feet. So, daisies are growing around our feet. love this, the daisies kissing our feet, touching our feet. It's personifying the daisies. Young lovers meet. So, yeah, young people fall fall in love at the beginning of spring. Old wives a-sunning sit. So, old ladies sit in the sun and take the sun. In every street these tunes our ears do greet. So, in every in every street that we are, we hear the sound of the birds. Our ears being greeted by the birds. Cuckoo, jug jug, pree, twit twit woo. The spring, sweet. The sweet spring. Yeah, so it's just saying how wonderful spring is, how lovely it is. So, enough.
