today want to talk about how to know if engineering is for you as woman now why would this be any different for woman compared to man it just is at least for me i'm gonna be talking completely from my own experience this is probably not the same for everyone but for me for sure was very different and the reason want to make this video is to show that even if you don't fit into the stereotypes of what an engineer should look like and what they should behave like what their interests should be this will not mean that you will not make good engineer because think there are lot of signs that you could be good engineer that are not often talked about and that have nothing to do with the stereotypes and that are way more important than the stereotypical you like to tune cars in your free time kind of thing so when decided to go into engineering was actually asked lot if do things like you know build stuff build robots in my free time tune cards in my free time do don't know what read books about engineering and do none of these things never have and probably never will because just don't really like those things but really like engineering and those things are just not related period at least not for everyone and as you can probably tell i'm really passionate about this because it pisses me off if people tell you you can't do something just because it doesn't come in the same box as they used to so this video is for everyone who's not sure if engineering is for them because maybe you don't have parent who's an engineer don't and probably you've not always programmed or built stuff in your free time so how can you know if you don't have those things that engineering is for you let's talk about it the first sign that you could make great engineer is that you're very creative and you're also interested in many different areas being creative is honestly one of the most important aspects of engineering and it doesn't really match the stereotype of the engineer working alone in their chamber following the rules of science to come up with something new there's actually lot of creativity involved in this because you need to connect lots of different fields which is why it's so useful to be interested in many different areas and have knowledge even from let's say sports or arts or music all of these aspects you can probably find way to bring them into engineering as an engineer you constantly need to come up with ways to improve something or to solve something build something from scratch so if you're really creative maybe you've always liked arts and crafts or come up with stories or you just feel very creative have lot of ideas then you already have really important prerequisite for engineering and for me for example i've always loved making music and dancing and doing arts and crafts and used to draw like blueprints for houses in my free time because was really obsessed with building them in the sims and think this is one of the signs this is something that can bring into engineering but it's not really usually interpreted like that sign number two that you would make great engineer is that you have the ability to work well both in teams and alone contrary to common beliefs engineers do not work all alone by themselves all the time in fact think that most jobs require you to work in team most of the time and then alone some of the time not the other way around which is often how it's perceived maybe if you go more in the direction of research then you are doing things more by yourself but if you work on project there's probably larger overlapping project that your project fits into that you need to coordinate with everyone in your team of course you also need to be able to work on things by yourself but this is probably more like 10 of the time where you can really focus on something maybe you are working on specification and writing that or you're designing 3d model and this of course is something that you would do by yourself but basically engineering is lot more social than the common belief and this also plays into sign number three that you would make great engineer and that is that you're good communicator now this doesn't mean that you have to be an extrovert and love talking to other people and hang out with them all the time in my team we have really good mix of both extroverts and introverts but communication is one of the major parts of being an engineer there's always other people that have information that you want and there's always information that you need other people to understand so that you can get them to do what you need for your project so in engineering usually you will take on different roles in project not one person does it all maybe there's one person overseeing the overall project and then everyone gets their subpart of that that they have to manage and then of course you need to coordinate with the other people because if you're just doing your own thing you're designing away at something without taking into account what the other people are doing then it's going to be disaster engineering is iterative which means that you design it then you talk to everyone else and compare what you've made see if it all fits together perfectly and probably that will not be the case immediately so then you go again at it and improve it and then check again whether this is better or not all of the parts of our project impact each other and cannot just be done without thinking about the others sign number four you enjoy solving problems and this doesn't have to be engineering problems because of course you need to be trained to do engineering problems and to even know what they are it's not something that necessarily comes natural to you most people will probably not think for themselves should probably build robot or production line in my free time there's different kinds of problems that you will solve so let's say your friend has problem are you inclined to help them with it do you want to come up with different solutions do you like brainstorming sessions all of these things can be signs that you really like solving problems and that engineering could be for you sign number five that you could make great engineer you are organized or at least you put effort into organization do you like making plans do you have structured way of thinking of doing things writing down things and communicating things do you like making lists love making lists or are you just really interested in organization now wish organization skills were prerequisite for engineering because lot of engineers are actually not very organized but if you are this can be huge advantage it helps so much if you have structure for planning your day for keeping track of all the tasks you're working on and for prioritizing those tasks and especially keeping track of all the requests that you get every day from other people by email in person on an instant message or on the phone or letter if you still use that at your work this is all lot easier if you're organized and only then can you have this free mental space to actually do the things and to know which tasks are the ones that should be working on and sign number six you have good spatial imagination maybe you like playing with lego as kid or like me building houses on the sims or you were building stuff out of other materials maybe in arts and crafts or maybe you like doing pottery which is actually really similar to production method called turning which uses steel or wood usually instead of clay but the dynamics of it are the same or are you really good at packing efficiently this can be your suitcase your car your dishwasher or your closet or when you're arranging furniture in your home can you imagine well how the space will be used where the walking path should be and what things should be close together designing factory is pretty much the same thing there you also think about okay what do need to have inside this factory which thing should be close together where do you need to walk where do you need to pass through by forklift so having good spatial imagination can show itself in many different ways and it's definitely super important skill for engineering so these were six signs to look out for if you're asking yourself if engineering could be for you and just want to reiterate that engineers don't all look the same and in fact it's so so important that engineering becomes more diverse because there's lot of problems if one group of people designs the technology for everyone and if you're woman or part of minority there's really limited number of role models for example in my case before became an engineer myself never met woman that was an engineer sure had some female classmates but never knew woman that was in an engineering position at place where wanted to be in the future and this is super important and so if you're struggling with engineering please don't let this discourage you know it's really hard and please know that there's other people that are way less skilled than you that feel way more entitled to the space and that you're probably fine you'll probably make great engineer so just want to leave that here and thank you so much for watching really appreciate it and hope to see you in my next video
