hi there everyone welcome to yet another session where we work to improve our writing skills let's get started generally when we are writing or given task in composition we say that we are writing composition and that is basically true however depending on the topic for the writing we would need to give different information and follow more direct pattern today we will look at what is considered to be narrative writing if you can recall did mention in one of our previous lessons that we have many kinds of writings and i'm sure that you would have done them at some time so we are going to be looking little more at narrative writing and then we'll take some time to look at the others in another lesson now narrative writing is generally classified as story it is one of the most popular style of writing it includes the elements of characters setting plot conflict and resolution the characters may all be mentioned in the introduction the events such as the high point or the climax is developed in the body and the resolution is seen as the conclusion or we say the ending of our story narrative writing is usually used to give recount of personal or fictional experience and what do mean when say fictional experience now as children you know sometimes you tell your friend story but it's not entirely true so that is what we mean when we say fictional experience you could make up story and write it or sometimes the entire story might not be fictional it might be mixture of your personal experience something that is non-fiction and some of the activities which may be seen as fictional we can generally tell story also by just imagining all right something might have never happened to you but you can just sit and as said you just make it up so the entire story could be fictional now have an example of narrative story what we're going to do today is examine two stories written by two students on the same topic so let's look at this one the storm and this is written by our first student one time was playing in the backyard behind my house the sky started to turn dark and the wind started to blow looked over the trees and saw big black cloud moving towards me then heard rumbling of thunder but it was still far away suddenly the rain started hitting my face it didn't start with just little rain it was pouring it came so fast was surprised then saw lightning in the sky and boom loud clap of thunder was scared didn't know what to do saw little old shack and ran into it it smelled awful and it was mostly rotten but it was better than nothing but the walls were shaking and didn't understand what was happening the wind was blowing so hard and things were flying all around outside the trees were blowing so hard they were bending over just stood in the corner shaking was cold and scared and shaky then the rain stopped and my dad came and found me and went home was safe now that is our first story based on the topic of the storm now here we have another writing of the story the storm want you to take your time pay attention follow as read and take notes the storm it was the middle of july we were on vacation we stayed in cabin near the lake where we went every year my brother and my dad were outside fishing and my mom had gone to the little store to get some sausage was supposed to make hot dogs for dinner loved to help fixing dinner the air was starting to smell like rain thought heard some rumbling out in the distance stepped out on the porch my skin was attacked by goosebumps it smelled like rain wasn't worried because love storms or at least used to the heat was so thick that beads of sweat broke out on my face my throat was dry the rain smelling air felt weird the wind began to blow and towel drying on the porch suddenly started flapping then saw black cloud just across the field the screen door started to bang and the trees were bending in the wind ran inside and started closing all the windows turned on the light because it had gotten so dark inside rain started pouring down outside and some of it was coming in through the curtains then boom load clap of thunder made me jump that scared me it was so close limbs were being slammed against the cabin making horrible noise thought the windows would be burst by the flying objects looked outside and saw lightning streaks across the sky and then heard more thunder the rain got louder and louder and the air suddenly turned cold grabbed the blanket from the couch and wrapped it around me wonder what to do was all alone and the storm was worse than anything had ever seen then the lights went out no what now then remembered from school that you were supposed to find safe spot in case of bad storm so ran into the bathroom and got into the tub then got out and ran to my room and got pillow and bottle of water from the kitchen at the last minute remembered to get flashlight out of the drawer and then went back and crawled into the bathtub could hear things hitting the roof and the side of the cabin wondered if there would be anything left of the cabin or of me was so scared pulled the blanket over my head and scoot down in the bottom of the tub with the pillow under me held on tight to the bottle of water squeezed my eyes shut and tried to block out the noise of the thunder and rain and wind but it was impossible after what seemed like hours suddenly heard my dad's voice shouting to me sat up and called back then the door was flung open that came in soaking wet with rain still dripping down his face he scooped me up and hugged me and told me everything was okay just hugged him back as tight as could my brothers and mom came in and everyone started talking at once about the storm and how wild it was there were trees down everywhere and somewhere across the road that's why mom couldn't get back from the store and why it took them all so long to get home the storm kept on for while but it didn't matter was safe now after reading those stories which one would you say is good example of narrative writing let's look in story one even though the description of the storm was fairly strong the composition leaves you bit disappointed because the ending was so abrupt even when we looked at the activities from the introduction to the conclusion there wasn't so much we wanted to hear more don't you think but then in story 2 this narrative showed great details and description here the writer built suspense by describing emotions as well as the power of the storm did you notice that that there were lot of adjectives and strong words used in that composition detailing exactly what she did to make sure that she was safe did you did you see that in the story there was lot of details of how she went about trying to make sure that she was safe when she ran into the house she closed the windows and all and while she was doing that she still gave us information of how the storm was behaving so the writer in story two kept us engaged we were not only seeing horror at one time and not feeling or understanding what was going on in the storm there were lot of words that kept us actively involved and actually feeling what they were writing so from story one and story two could say that story two was better composition or better example of narrative writing the introduction was very clear and there was smooth and logical conclusion at the end of that story after dad came home and then the mom came home the interaction with them and again we heard about the feelings of the writer hope that those stories give you clear example of what narrative writing should look like now want you to also remember and think about those stories and look at the elements were you able to identify the elements in those stories did you know who were the characters did you know about the setting where the story was happening when the story was happening which one of those narratives give you clearer picture of character and setting and then with the plot remember we said in narrative writing there is high point or climax so did you get very clear understanding in the narrative piece there of what the problem was and how it was resolved all of these are key points that you need to pay attention to remember we also discussed on numerous lessons that your story must have beginning middle and an end so please pay attention and look at those details now also you keep in mind that when writing narrative story the story can be based on you or it can be based on the experience of someone else now when writing narrative piece based on you personally we say that the story is written in first person point of view when writing in the fourth person point of view there are particular words that we would use words such as my mine and sometimes we can we can use the word we also narratives written in the first person are personal experiences that the writer would know all about it means something that you would know everything about because you experienced it now if the story is based on the experience of someone else we say that that story is written in the third person point of view when we write such stories in the third person point of view we use words such as he she it they them themselves the writer shares the experience of someone else in that story written in the third person point of view now when writing the narrative you need to be careful to read the scenario so that you can determine whether the story should be written in first person or second person and we will look at that little more but what you need to look at also is the scenario indicating whether the story should be written in past tense or present tense which is also very important now have two scenarios here that we're going to look at and determine which tense should be used in either one of the scenarios scenario one your parents are overseas and left you with your grandfather write composition telling about your experience give your composition title the second scenario your aunt invited you to spend easter with her in let him write composition about your time spent with your own can you identify which should be written in past tense and which should be done in the present tense the first scenario indicates that the situation is now or it is happening currently your parents are overseas and they left you with your grandfather it means that your parents are overseas and they left you it means that you are you are living now with your grandfather you have to write composition telling about your experience so the verbs you use should be in the present tense in the second scenario we are shown that the event has happened already the words that indicate this are invited spent we know that the easter holiday has passed already time spent all of these words show past tense and therefore this composition should be written in the past tense now as said in our next lesson we are going to look at writing narrative composition whether it's in first or third person point of view so we're going to explore what they mean and how we should go about doing that but let's recap what we did today keep in mind that narrative writing generally is writing story it is one of the most common types of writing the elements for the narrative writing are character setting and plot now in the plot it includes series of events which leads up to the conflict or the rising action and then the resolution or conclusion story can be based on personal experience or the experience of someone else the story can also be written either in the past tense or present tense but for you to be able to determine this you must read the scenario or the topic carefully okay then boys and girls that was quite lot we did today on narrative writing hope that you can remember what we did go through and prepare for our next lesson where we will explore little more so that we can become better writers am misham shiddin and see you next time do
