Map Skills 3 Landforms With Map Key Learn How to Read Maps

hi there! I'm Justin. Phew, got lot of maps. love maps, in case you couldn't tell. So welcome to Project Map. In this video, you're going to learn what landform map is, some examples of landforms, and you're going to try to make your own landform map yourself. Let's get into it! This is one of my favorite maps. It's got all these details about the surface of the Earth, you know, lakes, rivers, mountains. This kind of map is called landform map because it's focused on these details of the earth called landforms. We got river going across. We have this huge area of land. And look, there's an island in the middle of the ocean. to be cartographer. sorry, cartographer is someone who makes maps. As matter of fact, cartographers made all of these maps! They put these details in so that people would know what these areas looked like and not lose their way as they were exploring the wild. got an idea. Let's be cartographers and make our own landform maps! All right, for this lesson, you're probably going to need some crayons and paper, so why don't you just pause the video so you can get your supplies and come back here when you have them all? All right, ready to make your map? There are many different landforms. You've seen some of them since you live on the Earth. At least, hope you do. Today, we're gonna put six different landforms on our map: lake, an island, mountain, forest, desert, and river. Let's start with our first landform, lake. lake is body of water that's completely surrounded by land. So let's just draw big, blue circle and then maybe add some wavy squiggles. Looking good! Now, before we move on, landform maps have keys too. So put key somewhere on your map, and add lake to it as landmark. All right, great. Now let's make an island. An island is opposite to that of lake. It's body of land completely surrounded by water. So let's just put it in the middle of our lake. Make sure to color it something different than the lake. I'm gonna do green. And once you're done, add it to the key. Ready for the next landform? Let's make mountain. mountain is huge landform that's so tall that it rises above everything else around it, and it ends on nice, pointy peak. So why don't you draw big mountain, right around here. And once you're done coloring it in, let's add it to the key. Next up are the trees. Let's put forest on our map. forest is any area of land that's covered in trees. So let's just draw bunch of trees around this mountain. This might take while. And when you're happy with the amount of trees you've drawn, just put one on the key. Okay, great. Next landform's desert. desert is any area of land that doesn't get much rainfall, meaning that no trees can grow there. Now, when you think desert, you might be thinking sand, but actually, the world's largest desert is Antarctica. It's so cold, it just doesn't rain there. Anyway, back to the map. Color in your desert and add that to the key. All right, now we're ready to make our sixth and final landform, river. Like lake, river is body of water, only river flows in direction and can cover thousands of miles. Usually ends up in lake or an ocean. Let's draw nice, long river. And add that to the map key. Hey, cartographers! You made fantastic landform map.
