did you know that we can use unit fractions to decompose fraction into smaller parts so what is unit fraction and what does the word decompose mean unit fraction is any fraction that has numerator of one for example one-half one-third one-fourth and one-fifth are all unit fractions because they all have numerator of one the word decompose means to break fractions into smaller parts we can take any fraction that has numerator greater than one and break it up into smaller parts for example let's take look at the fraction four-fifths since our numerator is four we know we have total of four out of five equal parts we can use fraction bar to represent each fifth or also number bond our numerator tells us we have four fifths or four groups with one one-fifth in each group can represent the fraction four-fifths as an equation by using my understanding of unit fractions since our numerator is four and there are total of four groups of one-fifth in our fraction can decompose this fraction or break it up into one-fifth plus one-fifth plus one-fifth plus one-fifth which is equal to four-fifths can also combine any of the fractional parts together to create an equation that is equal to four-fifths for example two-fifths plus two-fifths will give me four-fifths where can rewrite the equation as one-fifth plus three-fifths which is also equal to four-fifths if this video helped you please give us like and subscribe to our channel where you will find hundreds of math and science bites we upload weekly and want you to ace your next test and become cooler and smarter nerd
