let's talk about food hello and welcome to another lesson in this lesson we're going to talk about food and eating which is very good subject right I'm bit hungry so I'm going to enjoy this now two of my friends have decided to help me we're going to ask them about their eating habits first let's talk to Jack Jack tell us little bit about your eating habits used to eat lot of junk food like Burgers and Fries but I've changed my habits now focus on having nourishing meal every day love cooking so most nights prepare homemade meal and always include fresh produce in my meals try to buy organic food whenever possible used to rely on ready meals when was busy but realized they're not great for my health I'm cutting down on processed food because it often contains too many additives overall I'm really trying to eat better and take care of my body waa Jack used lot of interesting vocabulary about food and eating let's start learning them one by one he said he used to eat lot of junk food junk food what is junk junk is trash it's garbage what is junk food it's garbage food well kind of yes junk food is kind of food that is usually fast and convenient to eat and it's often very tasty but it's not healthy because it has lot of fat sugar and it's very high in calories try to avoid junk food but sometimes crave bag of chips he said he's now focusing more on nourishing meals nourishing meal what is it nourishing meal is the opposite of junk food it's good for your body and for your health for dinner I'm going to have nourishing meal of grilled chicken with vegetables and brown rice if you want to stay healthy lessen up try to make homemade meals homemade meal what is it well it's self-explanatory homemade meal is Meal made at home so stand up go and cook for yourself it's much healthier trust me though it may not be as delicious as junk food now to make good homemade meal you may want to use fresh produce produce this word is very interesting produce produce is verb which means to make something lessen up produce where's the dress first syllable or the second syllable produce produce on the second syllable but as noun produce produce are vegetables and fruit now where is the stress produce produce produce first syllable buy fresh produce from the farmers market every week talking about farmers market and fresh produce it's good idea to also discuss organic food now organic food is food that is produced without any chemicals it grows organically it's more expensive but it's healthier do prefer organic food because it's healthier but again it's more expensive Jack also said that he used to rely on ready meals what's ready meal if you are busy and you don't have time to cook and you don't want to go to restaurant you can go to supermarket and you can see ready meals like frozen lasagna or frozen pizza now are they really healthy don't think so but are they convenient yes so if you don't have time to cook probably they're good because they're also very cheap but they're not very healthy but if you have time make homemade meals with fresh produce and organic ingredients you see how I'm using these new vocabulary items to make sentences and that is exactly what want you to do but honestly when don't have time to cook or I'm too lazy sometimes have ready meal he also talked about process proced food what is it processed food is food that has been changed lot for example this used to be potato and it's supposedly potato chip but it doesn't look like potato now it has been processed there is too much salt and fat in this is it healthy not at all but is it delicious my God and so crunchy and another problem with processed food is that they have lot of additives additives what are additives additives are substances added to food to preserve its flavor or to enhance its taste additives are never good for example many snacks have additives to keep them fresh for longer all right we've learned seven items of vocabulary related to food and eating now it is time to listen to my other friend Joey Jo zo tell us about your eating habits recently I've become more curious about what eat for example I'm reading up on GM food because want to understand its impact on health and the environment tend to avoid perishable items unless I'm sure I'll use them quickly no one likes wasting food for quick snack usually grab piece of fruit and some nuts it's simple and keeps me going on weekends sometimes treat myself to slap up meal at nice restaurant believe in having good balance so try to ensure that each day includes at least one square meal something substantial and nutritious enjoy gourmet food especially when I'm traveling it's important not to spoil my appetite with too many snacks though especially if plan to dine out and love outdoor activities they really help me work up an appetite for my meals thanks Joey he also used lot of good vocabulary items so let's start learning them one by one first one was GM food GM is that code or something GM genetically modified genetically modified food is what it's basically food that has been genetically modified they have changed something in the food and this usually happens through genetic engineering so they basically start messing around with the food doesn't sound healthy but hear me out if you can have tomato with added protein that's so cool right because tomatoes naturally don't have protein so if through genetic engineering you can add protein to tomatoes that's cool but again it doesn't sound healthy but let me tell you one thing recently came across this startup that that is creating protein from Air how how do you make protein from Air have no idea but hey science is improving imagine protein from Air he also talked about perishable perishable food what is perishable as an adjective what does it mean perishable food is food that can spoil or go bad quickly that's perishable like meat fish or milk milk is perishable so it should be kept in the fridge he also talked about quick snack and I'm sure you know what snack means quick snack is small and easy to make food item that you can eat between breakfast to lunch or lunch to dinner as quick snack usually have an apple and some nuts very healthy quick snack but snack is not that much what if you're so hungry and you want to eat lot then you can have slap up meal slap-up meal is large luxurious meal on my birthday we went out for slap-up meal at fancy restaurant talking about slap-up meal there is something similar square meal Square meal square meal is balanced satisfying meal that includes all the main food groups my mom always insists on having at least one square meal per day slap of meal ready meal Square meal have you ever heard of the word Gourmet what's Gourmet it's not Gourmet you write Gourmet but you read Gourmet but what does it mean Gourmet is an adjective which means very high quality for example gourmet meal is meal with very high quality and they're usually very expensive gourmet coffee is very high quality coffee gourmet restaurant is place where they serve gourmet food and the chef who cooks gourmet food is Gourmet Chef so you see how you can use this adjective in many different ways but the basic idea is Gourmet is an adjective to describe food of high quality they served gourmet dishes that were both delicious and elegantly garnished your desire to eat something is your appetite appetite now let's say you want to have dinner at 9: it's 8:00 p.m. right now and you decide to have some chips what happens when you have chips an hour before having dinner are you still hungry to have dinner no because having chips has spoiled your appetite spoil your appetite that basically means eating something that makes you less hungry for your next meal don't eat too many cookies now it'll spoil your appetite for dinner the opposite of spoil your appetite what is it work up an appetite work up an appetite means to do something that makes you feel hungry for example some physical activity Long Walk always helps me work up an appetite it means when go for long walk feel hungry all right guys that's it we've learned
