Today we're learning about starfish. Starfish belong to group of species called invertebrates. Unlike the name, they are not fish. Rather, they are called starfish because of their star-like appearance. They usually weigh up to 5 kg and can live up to 35 years. They come in various colors, shapes, and sizes. They can have five, six, seven, or even more arms. Their bodies are shaped like central disc with arms radiating out of it, creating star shape. Some starfish grow as many as 50 arms, and the arms are covered with pins like organs and suckers that allow them to slowly creep around the ocean floor. They also have eye spots on the tip of their arms, which allows them to sense light and darkness and also find food. Starfish live in the ocean and can be found in different parts of the world from the shallow tidal pools to the deep sea habitats. They love hanging out in the cool ocean waters. Starfish also have tiny tube feet on their unders sides which they use to move around. These feet help them grip onto surfaces and slowly crawl along the ocean floor. Starfish are not picky eaters. They like to munch on things like clams, oysters, and muscles. They have unique way of eating which is pushing their stomach out of their body to wrap around their food, digest it outside their body, and pull their stomach back in. Starfish play an essential role in keeping the ocean clean. They help control the population of other animals by feasting on things like sea urchins. Fun fact.
