moving to independent reading is natural flow from the read aloud to the shared reading to the guided or small group reading conferring and then the opportunity for independent reading that varies lot in classrooms and oftentimes I'll take the first five or ten minutes of the day for independent reading when my kids come in they know the classrooms about reading and writing and we're about learners being in classroom together and learning from each other so that first five or ten minutes is part of my independent reading but everyone might be independent reading and may be circulating talking to number of students while I'm taking care of the traditional business of taking attendance and meeting with some kids who have particular needs like forgot my backpack didn't bring my permission slip or my lunch bag got smashed on the bus what am gonna do when think about these first five or ten minutes of the day made check-in with students who have particular needs that day it may be that they forgot something their lunch got crushed on the school bus when they sat on it or have an attendance roster that my principal needs in the first fifteen minutes in the morning starting with an independent reading block does it mean that's my only independent reading time but it's great way to welcome and greet your kids ask what they're reading and have them just start reading so they know we're about reading all day long every day in every way you
