foreign body coverings are special external structures that help animals live in their surroundings different animals have different body coverings mammals like cats dogs and humans have fur or hair birds have feathers reptiles and fish have scales let's look more closely at the body coverings of some animals think about tiger big cat with thick striped fur this fur does two important jobs it helps the tiger stay warm in cool weather and its stripes help the tiger hide in tall grass when it's hunting another mammal the Echidna has fur too but it's very different an echidna's fur is more like sharp spikes these spikes make it hard for other animals to eat the Echidna birds have feathers and they use them in different ways most birds use their feathers to fly and to stay warm but penguins which are birds that can't fly have special feathers that are waterproof this helps them stay dry and warm when they are swimming in cold water fish and many reptiles have body covering made of scales scales are like Tough Armor that helps protect these animals turtles have kind of scale called plates if turtle thinks it's in danger it can hide inside its hard shell made of these plates that's great way to stay safe these are just few examples of how animal body coverings help them live and stay safe in their own special way can you think of some other examples don't forget to subscribe
