still make mistakes in writing and speaking please help me okay so you you know grammar which is great but you keep making mistakes okay well remember that making mistakes is always you know beneficial because people learn from their mistakes that's how they get better so would just say keep practicing every single day little chunks of at time if you can relate the the studying that you're doing to both speaking and writing okay so that you don't overwhelm yourself and yes just just keep practicing every day that's my advice thank you so much Julia yes my wedding dress is still hanging up in my bedroom like to look at it every day it's just that it will probably stay there for few months so thank you so much everybody so like said today we are going to be looking at would love to to try some new things and so yeah so we're starting off my new married life I'm trying to improve lots of different things so so hope that you like it okay then so let's let's just let's just get cracking shall we so rituals and traditions traditions and rituals today we are going to answer some general questions as we always do about the topic then we're going to learn about an international organization which is very important when we are discussing traditions and rituals we're going to look at some worldwide traditional traditions and rituals we are going to do gap fill vocabulary exercise and then we are going to go into more depth about traditions and rituals from your country so that's going to be our plan of action for today so my first question is what are some important traditions in your culture so as always if you could please share your answers in the chat box for me foreign so what are some traditions important traditions in your culture thank you very much Mina thank you Dominico really appreciate it thank you English literature thank you thank you shs films but also thank you thank you Samaya thank you lolly lolly thank you sir thank you Eva thank you thank you thank you thank you romelia we are going to answer that question in about two questions three questions time so that's the one of the last things that we are going to talk about on this slide okay so will answer your question but in one moment in Brazil it's the junina part party don't know how to say that christantha marriage Traditions great Billy the Water festival yes we have spoken about the Water festival before junina Marina hanging up lost objects on trees so that people can find them is that tradition English literature Indian Hindu culture okay learn English the anasai rituals from the agriculture New Year wow Dowry paying is part of the tradition in our culture how about where you come from Curry no we do not have that ritual in the United Kingdom have heard of obviously the Dowry know that is very popular and very important tradition In some cultures yes perhaps maybe mean even in history don't really remember learning anything about people having to to offer something mean we have the tradition where the the groom should ask permission from the bride's parents to marry but that's about it Marina chugging lots of beer around October 1st love that one dreamer Christmas and Easter okay great Julia would like to single out one of my traditions that we pay the homage to our ancestors with food and grocery in every August of each year did not know that Julia that's very very interesting tradition great El in the Philippines we have fiesta tradition and and Catholic tradition to respect Jesus fantastic once year in my town couple marry an ancient local costumes that's great absolutely okay so what is your favorite tradition in your country and why so this could be mean we're talking about usually cultural Traditions that people celebrate from your country but you could also talk about maybe family traditions that you might have okay so what is your favorite tradition and would like to know why so Lolly Lolly's favorite edition is Christmas because can meet or my family and relatives absolutely lolly lolly think Christmas is my all-time favorite tradition and the little family traditions that we have within that tradition that make it extra special absolutely Sarah don't know how to say this so my apologies if say this incorrectly mine is shambi sorry happy tradition by which people jump over fire or on fire and try to be happy and dance to start the new year that sounds like really fun time Hanjo don't like anything in here that's why want to change my identity do you mean Hanjo that you don't like any Traditions that your country has Alberto one of the most representatives in England in England in Mexico is Dia de Muertos Mexicans commemorate their loved ones who have passed away we set altars with food drinks candies flowers and colorful decorations that's amazing so Alberto hope that you will share your Insight on this tradition bit later on because maybe that's going to come up Carrie this prompt is absolutely controversial some people believe that the climate has the greatest effect on people's way of life others believe that the economy of the region has the greatest effect discuss both of these views and give your opinion hello thank you for joining us how are you Maria bring it the most important tradition in Albania is hospitality it's however subordinary sub ordinated to greater tradition or better call Concept is better better is the idea that wants to see the hosted person sacred wow in South Italy there is day which people call tatanism which is an invented pathology with wild dances and rituals that involve music love that Lucia Lucia Indian marriage Billy my favorite tradition is Karen New Year day because on that day we wear our various traditional distress and eat our current Foods wow laughs gaming on don't think tradition and culture is the same thing because tradition is the part of culture next question do you know of any other important Traditions from other cultures for me my favorite date my favorite one is fredia in April people meet every day in order to eat and dance yes love La Feria and the costumes the music Hanjo not exactly it's just there is nothing that I'm enthusiastic you're not enthusiastic about anything in your country Hanjo where are you from again can't remember I'm glad you're well Maria Carmen am also very well thank you Julia it's about for bringing you good luck from our parents and the relatives when was young great Lucia celebrating Halloween is an important tradition in England Ramadan another yes very good does anybody know of any other Traditions from other cultures fireworks yes pretty little Carmen fireworks in London in the UK on the 5th of November yes lolly lolly Ramadan is an important tradition for Muslims absolutely in Kenya there are different tribes the different traditions and cultural practices certain tribe hosting bull fighting as tradition and the ball that loses the fight is slaughtered sounds very similar to Spain kashita Marina in Hungary girls are watered by boys at Easter with perfume or water absolutely well thank you for sending me all these love hearts right so what is ritual Lucia St Patrick's Day in Ireland but don't remember the day think it's the 17th of March think so the 17th of March Alberto has heard about St Patrick's Day and of course Halloween yes valdemia New Year in China is very important yes Julia water festivals the most popular Myanmar culture to celebrate and every month in April in terms of washing away your sins great so what's ritual can anybody tell me what ritual is Okay Marina that's an example of original like the one Shaman perform to shh shoo Spirits away romelujeres succession of things you do excellent spiritual action believe that ritual is an action with several steps in order very good Maria little Carmen so yes so ritual is set of actions or set of words which you will especially see as part of religious ceremony or it can be way of doing something where the actions that are done are done the same way every time okay you can usually like said you usually see this but then like religious ceremony where there are specific words or verses that you have to read from maybe Biblical text or proverb or something and that's like ritual but then it can also be like we use the word ritual to also talk about the things that we do in particular way in particular order in our day-to-day lives for example hello Luis good morning thank you for joining us yes exactly lolly lolly so that would be your like nighttime ritual okay yeah it is it is habit yeah it's habit purposeful habit we usually do ritual to be don't know have certain feeling or have some special experience Etc great well done so yes exactly so how are traditions and rituals changing around the world so when you think about today's society okay what do you think is happening to Traditions into rituals this is very open question okay it's very much your opinion how do you think traditions and rituals are changing foreign okay I'm really I'm really enjoying reading your your ideas just going to answer Domenico one second Carrie how do you feel about this prompt the global demand for oil and gas is increasing some people believe that there's that we should therefore encourage the exploitation of remote areas do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages wow you can really argue some good points for that prompt but again try to be objective that's that's very interesting remote areas dear and so it's getting simpler rituals are more of thing of the past but in some traditions communities are kept would agree with that radiator Cameron for instance in some places of Africa women can study or work yes whereas in the past they were not able to Marina Society is getting more Multicultural absolutely Marina fantastic idea and thought well done where is Manuel Manuel has an appointment so he just stopped by to say hello and then he he had to leave unfortunately we are mixing with other cultures think globalization influences traditions and rituals around the world and sometimes these aren't preserved or they change because of the influence of other countries Traditions absolutely Lucia well done if the calendar day changes rituals May changed absolutely based on their renowned things of their culture don't know exactly okay so think that that's those ideas were kind of what was looking for like said that question was very open-ended question just to get you thinking about maybe how traditions and rituals are changing and yeah it's mean it's obviously incredibly important to promote our traditions and cultures and to also encourage younger generations to continue them now obviously we live in very Advanced like tech technologically advanced culture societies social media mobile phones they're kind of taking over our day-to-day lives so it's incredibly important that we encourage younger generations to to appreciate you know their culture and their Heritage and where they are from Rosa the way we work changes the way that we spend our time more people prefer to spend their off days going on holiday instead of them spending time with their family traditions have lost their importance on people absolutely in Syria there are many traditions it will bring the meaningful changes and some limited beliefs to be optimistic view that the sign of good things to come the younger Generations seem not to follow their Traditions yeah and that's bit of problem so here is question have you ever heard of this before what is UNESCO what is UNESCO think I'm gonna have to move my face without necessarily disappeared hello hello sorry I'm being what is UNESCO without looking online no cheating what is it really what was the weather like what is UNESCO what is it can you try to describe what UNESCO is in your own words Marina world heritage tradition an international organization for prevention upon it is it an organization Julia did you look online yes so well done everybody UNESCO is an abbreviation for the United Nations educational scientific cultural organization yes so U.N they are responsible they are the the organizers of the organization so yes Versa the United Nations also have another organization sister organization maybe you could say called UNICEF and that specific organization has lots of fundraising and research and information for children around the world but UNESCO is specifically related to Heritage culture science and all of those wonderful things so here have some information for us to look at I'm still in the way so I'm gonna have to make myself bit smaller there we go okay so UNESCO is the United Nations educational scientific and cultural organization but what does that actually mean so it's it is formed for almost all countries and it mostly declares places as Heritage sites so people have to take those places seriously it's okay Rosa so yes that is correct so UNESCO United Nations basically are responsible for making sure different cultures obtain the right to protect like different countries have the right to protect certain aspects of their culture now you will probably know that UNESCO is involved in efforts to promote and protect the natural environment and Humanity's common cultural heritage sites for example in the 1960s UNESCO helped sponsor efforts to save ancient Egyptian monuments from the Waters of the Aswan Hai Dam then in 1972 it sponsors an international agreement to start world heritage list of culture sites and natural areas that would benefit from cult from government protection Okay so basically what this means is that if in your country you have site place monument something that represents some part of your culture or you know is very important Landmark which represents parts of your culture then it can be added to this world heritage list and that can stop governments from destroying the area building over the area changing the area Etc so it really is quite fantastic organization so more interestingly in 2008 UNESCO began to recognize and identify intangible cultural traditions right never knew this until started preparing this lesson so found it very interesting intangible cultural Traditions these include traditional art forms such as music dance and craft making The Living Traditions that are an important part of place's culture so we're not only talking about places monuments structures landmarks we're also talking about intangible things like food music specific dances different crafts that different countries make okay so interesting so that's what we are going to learn about today ladies and gentlemen so by 2017 2017 UNESCO had approved more than 300 diverse practices so let's see if we can recognize some of them so I'm going to show you some pictures of six UNESCO approved intangible cultural traditions that will or are being recognized as very important traditions and rituals so here we go I'm going to show you some pictures now can you name any of these how funny would it be if put my face on one of these puppets where is Daisy Lee Daisy Lee would find this funny okay so I'm just going to give you couple of minutes to look at the pictures appreciate them for what they are and then I'm not going to say exactly which ones are which right now but then on the next slide we will look at the the names wonder if somebody like joins the Stream and then they they don't know where am they can't see me I've been such silly mood today actually hello and welcome thank you for joining us did you see me thank you hello Ashley Shen how are you some lost luggage what okay so let's have look here we go have numbered the pictures one to six so you need to match the names of the Traditions to the correct letters to easy foreign and Julia very good Arya fantastic well done good morning pilly from Peru thank you for joining me hello Enriquez thank you for joining me too well done Ashley Shen okay then so think everybody has got them right if not and this is the first time you're seeing these different Traditions then please don't worry we're all here to learn so number one number one was Day of the Dead number two was Arabic coffee number three was the Dragon Boat Festival number four was Flamenco in Spain number five was Puppet Theater in Sicily and number six is which is the al-sadu weaving foreign so all of these Traditions can be put under specific category this is what UNESCO do when they're looking for traditions and rituals from over the world UNESCO intangible cultural tradition can be either cultural event performing art Regional food or drink or handicraft so now what would like you to do is put the numbers of these Traditions next to the correct category okay I'm gonna try and put in chat where these are from okay sorry changed the numbers around so that's bit confusing I'll have to change that perhaps sorry mean it's not that important now but don't want people to get confused okay thank you foreign should have already done this before Flamenco is from Spain the Puppet Theater Sicily is Italian yes Arya and the Day of the Dead is of course which is what Alberto mentioned earlier from Mexico right okay so here are the answers so event number one and number three this is so confusing how did not realize this early so upset with myself okay cultural events number one and number three which is what what did do here this is so confusing really messed this up didn't you know what I'm just gonna delete this and then I'll have to change it before post it so remember that you get the lesson materials at the end of the class I'll change it for that okay so number one and number three number one day of the dead and number three Dragon Boat Festival are both cultural events Performing Arts we have Flamenco in Spain and then the Puppet Theater in Sicily then regional food or drink would be the Arabic coffee and then number six the AL -saru weaving would be handicraft so in the reading that gave you based on UNESCO there were some words in bold so what you are going to do now is you are going to complete another short text about UNESCO using the correct form of the words in the green box however there is one extra word that you do not need so six gaps seven possibilities and you need to change the you might need to change the form of the word so UNESCO the United Nations educational scientific and cultural organization plays crucial role in safeguarding and the world's cultural traditions while many people associate UNESCO primarily with protecting landmarks and natural wonders its commitment to preserving cultural heritage is equally significant one of the most notable initiatives in this regard is unesco's intangible Heritage list which includes wide range of Traditions from dance and arts to and food now would recommend reading through the whole text before you choose your answers because maybe one Gap could have two possibilities but then maybe the next Gap you would have to include one of those two possibilities so definitely read through the whole text before you make your decision why can't you see the text maybe change the the quality of the video thank you okay I'm just going to give you two more minutes to finish foreign like said one of the words you do not need to use okay so there are seven vocabulary words possibilities but only six of them fit in the text correctly okay so let's go through and check your answers number one promoting remember that told you you might have to change if the form of the word oops so as you can see safeguarding and promoting the world's ancient cultural traditions number three Heritage sites in plural so Heritage sites because we're talking about plural protection sites landmarks natural wonders okay then we have number four intangible number five diverse and number six craft making so can see that pretty much everybody got the correct answers but you do need to make sure that you change the form of the words okay so well done everybody good job the last task today is to think of some intangible cultural heritages from your country and think of at least one idea for each category okay so your task is to think of traditions and rituals from your country but to think of intangible cultural heritages so would like you to come up with at least one for each of these four things cultural event Performing Arts Regional food or drink and handicrafts so if you were don't know if you were the head of UNESCO and you were able to put some of your country's Traditions under these four categories which ones would you choose Marina is already giving me some answers thank you Marina Carnival wait hang on can you see the whole question now you can't I'm in the way I'll go down here thank you obviously they don't have to already be on the list okay that's not what I'm asking you want you to try and come up with your own list of some traditions that you have in your country that you think could be added onto the list Marina love Stalin have that every single Christmas do not worry Marina mean it's perfectly not the same but the United Kingdom has had stolen I'm probably not pronouncing it correctly but that's how we pronounce it in England we have been eating stolen for Christmas ever since was born so yes Marina but have to try traditional version obviously love it it's delicious absolutely delicious unfortunately can't buy it here in Spain but I'm looking forward to December that's for sure okay thank you lolly lolly again what dish can't pronounce it in French but gratin Dothan Noir potatoes like the best the absolute best okay so alaberto can't pronounce that festival Inox or ox thank you lolly lolly got Ox my God Mexico Molly love mole too beautiful food love good Molly number one book number two lanterns lighthouses three nothing specific throwing enlightens about six feet high the holy Festival chapati is that the bread kashita feel like I've had chapati before do you stuff it with something want to know more about Traditions prevalent around in the world can anybody tell me about specific book which is written on traditions and rituals on diverse countries all that's very good question palak champagne the very best well think we have run out of time ladies and gentlemen it's three o'clock am going to take myself out on post-wedding run to burn off all of the alcohol and food have consumed over the last many days so that means that will be back here on the 3rd of October so like told you last week the other two topics that wanted to do for my online streams they are going to be coming up so as you can see on the 3rd of October we will be doing some IELTS speaking practice okay so quite you know fun lesson to do if you're looking to practice your speaking and to maybe learn some new vocabulary but the activities are going to be based on the three tasks from the IELTS exam and then on the 10th of October we will be doing British English part two so two months ago did lesson on British English and specifically looking at pronunciation so we're going to be doing bit more practice on British English pronunciation and we're also going to be looking at some British English language so some vocabulary expressions and phrases that you will probably come across if you ever visit the United Kingdom okay so will you answer on Instagram teacher Hanjo have you sent me message on Instagram I'm sorry haven't had anything recently don't think so only some congratulations from photo posted yesterday okay then so thank you so much to everybody for participating in today's class had really good time as well it's been great lesson hope that you have enjoyed it and hope that you will be maybe looking up some of these Traditions to learn more about them and yes it's Wednesday today so happy hump day as we would say the middle of the week can be rough but hope that you enjoy the rest of your week hope that everybody has fantastic weekend and will see you in October okay so thank you very much everybody thank you for joining me have lovely week
