hi welcome to learn with me mrs sullivan today we are reading the non-fiction text families working together the essential question is what happens when families work together read about family that works together on farm it's 3 45 a.m on tuesday mary gelder is ready for work she and her mom drive many miles from their farm in michigan to chicago they sell fruits and vegetables at farmer's market customers visit their farm stand to buy fresh food love seeing who will eat the food my family works hard to grow mary says after long day the gelders return home they do it all again on saturday but their work does not stop there each day they do many chores the family plants waters and picks fruits and vegetables one of mary's jobs is to care for the chickens her brothers repair trucks and tractors they check farm tools such as shovels and drills mary's mom renee takes care of the money of money pardon and workers when the gelders choose what to plant they look at demand in the summer people want strawberries so the family plants lot of them sometimes they sell less than they have the gelders turn the extra fruit into jam love strawberries mary says it's great to have jam in the winter when there is no supply of fresh strawberries here we see the gelders with some apples and the caption says the gelder family farm produces apples and other fruits up above there's little picture of honey running farm costs money so the gelders tried to save some time ago they bought an outdoor wood stove they burned the farm's old trees for heat the heat warms their home and barn it helps the family spend less during the cold months we help each other and we help the environment renee says i'm really proud of my family and our farm here is the caption that goes with the picture that shows their farm stand people buy jam and fresh fruit from the gelders family farm stand here is chart that shows producing and consuming producing means to make consuming means to use some people produce items that people buy people who buy items are called consumers here's look at some items that are produced and who consumes them what's produced bicycles who consumes it kids and athletes what's produced books who consumes it teachers students readers what's produced food who consumes it people and animals what's produced cars who consumes it drivers so that's producing and consuming so we're going to be thinking about responding to the text remember texts are the words written down so we're going to use some details from the selection from this story or text to summarize to tell the important parts we're going to write about how does the family farm help provide other people with food and third how does the gelders family work on their farm help others
