Adding 2 Digit Numbers With Regrouping Double Digit Addition Elementary Math with Mr J

welcome to math with mr in this video i'm going to cover how to add two-digit numbers with regrouping and we have four examples that we're going to go through together in order to get this down now do want to mention before we start that regrouping is also called carrying so if you here to regroup or to carry they mean the same thing so let's jump into number one where we have 26 plus 18. have both of those numbers represented by base 10 blocks to the right of the problem those base 10 blocks are going to help us visualize exactly what's going on within this problem and give us better understanding of addition now when we add whole numbers we always start with the ones so we have six ones plus eight ones that's going to give us 14 ones but we can't fit 14 into the ones place we can't fit two digit number into the ones place so what we're going to do is make group of 10 out of the ones and regroup or carry it over to the tens place so we have six ones plus another four ones would give us group of ten so we're going to regroup that group of 10 over to the tens place and i'll put stack there representing group of ten so we have four ones left in the ones place so we'll put that four in the ones now we count how many tens we have so we have one group of ten two three and four so four tens so our answer is forty-four let's solve that to the left without the base 10 blocks as well and see if we get the same thing so 6 plus 8 again is 14 so we'll put the 4 in the ones place and then regroup the one group of ten from fourteen with the tens place now let's add the tens one ten plus two tens plus one ten so one plus two is three plus 1 is 4 so we get 44 again 44 is our final answer now the 4 in the tens place represents 4 groups of 10 and has value of 40. the 4 in the ones place represents 4 ones and has value of 4. let's do another one and move on to number 2 where we have 67 plus 25 and remember always start with the ones so 7 plus 5 is 12. now we can't fit two digit number in the ones place so we're going to need to regroup so seven ones plus three ones gives us group of ten that we can regroup to the tens place so let's regroup bring that over to the tens and we're left with two ones right here so we have two in the ones place now we count how many tens we have one two three four five six seven eight and nine nine tens so we get an answer of 92 let's do it without the base 10 blocks so 7 plus 5 is 12 so we put the 2 in the ones place and regroup the one group of 10 from 12 in the tens place so now we have one ten plus six tens plus two tens one plus six is seven tens plus two tens is nine tens now that nine has value of ninety because it's in the tens place and the two has value of two because it's in the ones place now another way to think of this the tens let's take look at the tens place we have 110 which has value of 10 plus 6 tens which has value of 60 plus two tens which has value of twenty so ten plus sixty plus twenty is ninety and that nine has value of ninety like we talked about because it's in the tens place so think about the value of the digits you're adding due to the place that they're in as you're going through the process understanding these values that's important to understanding what's going on within these addition problems and math in general so again 92 our final answer let's move on to numbers three and four and in these problems we're not going to use base 10 blocks we'll start with number three where we have 38 plus 22 start with the ones so 8 plus 2 that gives us 10 so one group of ten so we put our zero here and like numbers one and two we can't fit two digits into one place so we need to regroup our one from the ten our one group of ten with the tens so now we add our tens so one ten plus three tens plus two tens one plus three is four plus two is six so we get final answer of 60. now to recap there as far as the tens place 110 has value of 10 three tens has value of 30 and two tens has value of twenty ten plus thirty is forty plus twenty is sixty so that aligns with our answer we have six in the tens place that has value of let's move on to number four where we have 46 plus 45 start with the ones so we have 6 plus 5 which is 11. so we put the 1 from the ones place in in the ones place and we regroup or carry the one group of 10 to the tens place now we have 110 plus 4 tens plus 4 tens or 10 plus 40 plus 40. so 1 plus 4 is 5 plus 4 gives us 9. so we have 9 in the tens place now that 9 has value of 90 because it's in the tens place and then the one in the ones place has value of one because it's in the ones place so final answer of ninety-one so there you have it there's how you add two digit numbers with regrouping now check out the description for links to more edition videos hope that helped thanks so much for watching until next time peace
