Adverbials Part 1 the basics

النص الكامل للفيديو

hi there I'm Larissa from Orcas which stands for English resource lab keeping it simple this video is special request so we're going to have look at adverbials because clearly for some students this is challenge now and verbals are quite extensive so in this video I'm only going to cover adverbial phrases it's starting off with the definition what does an adverbial me then we're going to have look at two types of adverbial phrases we're going to look at modifier adverbial phrases and we're going to look at degree adverbial phrases with naturally lots of examples so this is an advanced English lesson if you are an advanced english learner then stay watching now what is an adverbial well to understand adverbials we need to do just little tiny bit of recap on adverbs because obviously adverb is the root word like all the nine parts of speech adverbs have very distinct role to play in the english-language adverbials however they don't adverbials are not standalone part of speech in english adverbials are designed to copy to behave like adverbs they could be one word or they could be two words or more so in this video we're only looking at phrases so we're only going to look at very short adverbials but there are adverbial clauses which will create in another video that'll be coming little bit later on so an adverb it's standalone part of speech and it's designed to modify verb an adjective or another adverb I'm not going to look at adjectives in this video I'm going to look at verbs how they modify verbs and we're going to look at how they modify other adverbs the main questions that adverbs answer are always when where how and to what degree something happens so to what degree to what extent that refers to how often something happens or how much there is of something now let's have look at these quick sentences we already ate dinner we ate dinner outside we quickly ate dinner we always ate dinner at 6 p.m. so what are the verbs in these sentences we have in the present and the past tense in the present we have eat and in the past we have ate so the adverbs modify these verbs they give us more information that's what modifying means give give us more information about the verb so the adverbs in these four sentences are already outside quickly and always which we can see answer the questions when where how and to what degree we know that most adverbs end in ly like quickly they don't always like already outside and always now some other adverbs that don't end in ly soon tonight yesterday too seldom never and the list is endless we had loads of words that are adverbs now the best rule to remember with adverbials because of course they can be one word or more is that all adverbs are adverbials but not not all that verbals are adverbs so let's take look at some examples let's first of all have look at some sentences where they are just one word adverbs see here we go I'll call Stephanie later think I'll go to the gym shortly Janie wants to go outside quickly buttered the toast the kids eat too many lollies Susan listens carefully so here we can see some nice short sentences what are the adverbs well we can see later shortly outside quickly too and carefully so these are adverbials and they're one word they're adverbs now let's take the same sentences and see how the adverbials really work I'll call Stephanie in one hour this is an adverbial which also answers the question when but we can see here in the phrase in one hour that we don't have an adverb but the phrase itself is an adverbial because it answers the question when it tells us when I'll call Stephanie example 2 I'll go to the gym during of the day during the day also doesn't contain an adverb but the phrase answers the question when example 3 Jamie plays near the shed the phrase near the shed doesn't contain an adverb but it still answers the question where buttered the toast with knife so the phrase with knife which happens to be prepositional phrase like the others answers the question how the kids won't give up their lollies in hurry in hurry is the phrase that again has no adverb but it still answers the question to what extent Susan listens with great enthusiasm the phrase with great enthusiasm also has no advert but it answers the question how in each one of these sentences that we just looked at whether it's one word or the phrase they are considered to be modifier adverbial phrases because they have modified the verb definitely hit subscribe and the Bell because have plenty of videos coming really really soon there's an adverbial thanks for watching I'm Marissa bye for now
