Today want to chat with you about Beyond the Page, ages 10 to 12, language arts, which is about sixth grade level. Hi, I'm Ailen. Welcome back to my channel. This is Homeschool with the Clarks. My daughter is in sixth grade and has been using it this year. They do also say it works for an advanced fifth grader. And this curriculum is nice because it's kind of like an all-in-one language arts curriculum. It covers obviously literature as they progress in levels. It covers literary analysis. It covers vocabulary, grammar, writing, composition, and it also just includes lot of really fun projects and activities that really enrich the experience. Before do fliprough of one of the units, do want to just show you all of the books. Have huge stack in my lap. I'm hoping that collected all of them. here we go. They're not in order, so sorry about that. So we have number the stars tuck everlasting science giants Albert Einstein the giver roll of thunderar me cry espiranza rising the tree that time built secret of the Andes the wanderer handy guide to writing city of emperor people of sparks shelf life short stories collection bull run and pink and say now am missing one book believe just one and that is what was the great depression but everything else think collected and stacked up and showed you every book or set of books like the what was the great depression goes with espanzing and so sometimes there's books that go together and then the handy guide to writing is used kind of throughout the curriculum but most books singular books have their own unit like this. They're designed to take about three weeks to complete and everything you need is in here. So, there is not teacher manual. There is like parent overview with the answer to the comprehension questions in the back of the book. So, let's flip the camera around and take look. All right. Here is Beyond the Page Language Arts, ages 10 to 12. This is about sixth grade level and this unit is on Esparanza rising. Every unit is supposed to take about 3 weeks. Starting out, you can see the table of contents, which is 10 lessons and then 2-day final project. And you can see lesson one is also 2 days. It does include the vocabulary at the beginning of the book. and they do usually cover vocabulary once or twice during the reading. It will list the required books which are Esparans Arising, The Handy Guide to Writing, and What Was the Great Depression. And then it also has the materials list. It looks like they're going to be making something quite tasty in lesson 10, so look forward to that. All right, so lesson one is 2day lesson. I'm assuming they're actually going to start reading in lesson one because of that. So, this level is written to the student. So, they are expected to read the getting started. So, they're starting with an introduction about Esparanza Rising. They're telling them the supplies they need, some ideas to think about, and then also they're giving them some definitions, some Spanish vocabulary explaining the Great Depression, and then what table of contents is. They are going to be reading from what was the great depression pages 1 to 81 and it does have the comprehension questions. Now the comprehension question answers aren't here but if you go to the back of the book and in the parent overview it shows everything exactly the same basically but then it has the answers to the comprehension questions. So you can do these verbally or check their work and it will have about what their answer would be. Obviously it's going to vary. So day one they're reading about reading what was the Great Depression and answering these questions and their activities are they're going to start photo journal. They're going to watch some videos. They're going to learn about Spanish vocabulary that's applicable from the book that they're going to read. And then moving on to day two. Day two, it gives you another quick little introduction and it's telling you that as you read through this novel each day, you will be assigned different rule role that will describe how you will respond to the chapters you've read. Today, your role is that of cultural commentator. And it's telling them to read some chapters and then they're going to journal about what they read. And so when they have them journal about what they read, they do not do comprehension questions. So there won't be comprehension questions for this. They'll be adding to their journal. And then they're going to start setting map. They're going to learn about the Mexican Revolution. And they're going to be looking at some videos here and looking at an interactive timeline. So this is from the photo journal from day one that they are going to be creating. And then here is activity two on their vocabulary. some map work, map of Mexico. And on to lesson two. So lesson two, again, it's broken up the same way. So for today, they're going to need Espirans Rising and Handy Guide to Writing. Tells them what chapters they're going to read. And then remember, it is not giving them comprehension questions. So, it's telling them what they what role they're going to play when reading so that they can then journal afterwards. So, today they're going to be wordssmith. They're going to learn about quotation marks and the story of the phoenix. And they're going to watch video and read poem about the phoenix. And it looks like they have two options for this activity. Here is the page on quotation marks. And then moving on to lesson three. The activities for this one is they're talking about writing dialogue, the class systems and systems of government. Again, more links that they're going to have to visit. Here is the page on dialogue on the class systems of government. So, here they're going to be making some illustrations to demonstrate it. So, here's the car for the wealthy people and the car for the peasants. They're going to do ven diagram on the class system and the political system. And moving on to the final project. This project is two days long, which is very common for this curriculum. lot of the times the final project is two days. and they are going to write dialogue and reenact their favorite scene from the book. They're going to pretend they were asked to direct movie based on the book Esparanza Rising. So, they're going to create movie poster and movie set and movie trailer. And on day two, they're going to create reader theater and perform the reader theater. Let me see if there's any. Yep. So, this is for their movie poster. They have two settings, Mexico and California. So, they'll be creating two settings. And then here is the reader theater. And the end that is beyond the page 10 to 12 language arts.
