Maine from Ataka Tours picked us up at the hotel to take us to Cairo airport to fly to the city of Asswan where our guide Peter was waiting for us. Let it go. Approaching Falai Temple by boat is one of the most memorable experiences in southern Asswan. The journey begins at the quiet marina along the Nile, where small motorboats wait to carry visitors across the calm waters toward the sacred island. As the boat leaves the shore, the landscape opens into wide stretch of the river dotted with granite rocks and small islands, creating peaceful and timeless atmosphere. The ride across the Nile is short but magical. The breeze from the river cools the warm desert air, and the sound of the boat gently cutting through the water echoes across the quiet surroundings. In the distance, the elegant columns and pylons of Fai Temple begin to appear, rising gracefully above the island's palm trees and stone terraces. Built mainly during the TMIC period, the temple complex was dedicated to the goddess Isis, one of the most revered deities in ancient Egyptian religion. As the boat approaches the dock, the temple's grand entrance becomes clearer. Massive stone pylons decorated with carvings of gods, pharaohs, and sacred rituals stand proudly against the bright Egyptian sky. Visitors step onto the island and walk along the stone path toward the main gateway, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the Nile waters on all sides. Exploring Fai feels like stepping back thousands of years into the spiritual heart of ancient Egypt. Inside the complex, elegant colonades, detailed reliefs, and hidden chambers reveal stories of mythology, kingship, and devotion. The temple setting on an island adds to its sense of mystery and serenity, making it one of the most enchanting monuments along the Nile. The journey to fly by boat is not only simple transfer, it is part of the experience itself. As the temple slowly comes into view across the water, visitors feel the same sense of awe that travelers and pilgrims must have felt when they arrived here in ancient times. Approaching the sacred sanctuary of Isis, rising from the Nile, the legendary island of Fai, one of the most beautiful sacred landscapes of ancient Egypt. Surrounded by shimmering blue water and pondline shores, the island was once powerful center of worship dedicated to the goddess Isis. Pilgrims traveled from across Egypt and even the Mediterranean world to visit this holy place, believing it to be sight of divine mystery and healing. The temple of Isis at Fai is the heart of the island's sanctuary. Built mainly during the TMIC and Roman periods, the temple complex displays elegant colonades, richly carved reliefs, and towering pylons that reflect the artistic refinement of the late Egyptian civilization. Its walls tell the sacred story of Isis, Osiris, and Horus. Scenes that celebrate rebirth, protection, and the eternal cycle of life along the Nile. Even after many ancient temples were abandoned, the cult of Isis continued here for centuries, making Fai one of the last strongholds of traditional Egyptian religion. Near the main sanctuary stands the temple of Arinopice, also known as Arsenis, Nubian god often associated with strength and protection. Though smaller than the temple of Isis, this structure adds an important cultural layer to the island's sacred architecture, its presence reflects the blending of Egyptian and Nubian religious traditions in southern Egypt. Carved reliefs within the temple depict offerings to the gods and scenes that emphasize harmony between neighboring cultures along the Nile Valley. Today, the temples of Fai stand not only as monuments of ancient devotion, but also as symbols of preservation. When the waters of the Nile rose after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, the entire complex was carefully relocated stone by stone to nearby Agilia Island to protect it from flooding. Thanks to this extraordinary effort, visitors can still walk through its courtyards, admire its carvings, and experience the spiritual atmosphere that has surrounded Fai for more than 2,000 years. Sparkles. The island of Fai remains one of Egypt's most enchanting archaeological sites. place where history, mythology, and the timeless flow of the Nile come together in remarkable harmony. love. hey. Heat. Evenings may feature cultural entertainment, music, or simply the tranquil experience of watching the river under the stars. Traveling by river also recreates the historical route that merchants, priests, and pharaohs once followed. For millennia, the Nile served as the main highway of Egypt, connecting cities and allowing the culture to flourish along its fertile banks. Cruising along this waterway provides unique perspective on the geography that shaped the development of one of humanity's earliest great civilizations. Early in the morning, we set off for Abu Symbol, 4.5hour journey to reach this beautiful temple. On the remote southern frontier of Egypt, near the border with Sudan and beside the vast waters of Lake Nasser, stands one of the most extraordinary monuments of the ancient world, the temples of Abu Symbol. Carved directly into sandstone cliff over 3,200 years ago, this site is one of the most powerful expressions of royal authority ever created by the civilization of the ancient Egyptian civilization. The temples were built during the reign of the powerful pharaoh Rammeses 2 in the 13th century B.C.E. 1264 B.CE. Rammeses 2 ruled for more than 60 years and left an immense architectural legacy across Egypt. Abu symbol was intended not only as place of worship but also as monumental statement of Egyptian power to the peoples of Nubia. The main temple is dedicated to the gods Ammonius Arhoreti and Ta along with the deified Ramises himself. The facade is dominated by four colossal seated statues of Ramis' 2 each about 20 high. These statues gaze across the desert and the Nile Valley symbolizing the pharaoh's eternal authority. Between and around the colossal figures are smaller sculptures depicting members of the royal family, including Queen Nefertari, princes and princesses. Early in the morning, we set off for Abu Symbol, 4.5hour journey to reach this beautiful temple. Entering the great temple reveals vast hall supported by pillars carved as statues of the king in the form of Osiris. The walls are covered with reliefs that celebrate Ramis' tus victories, especially the famous battle of Kadesh against the Hittite Empire. At the deepest sanctuary of the temple sit four statues, Ammonius, Aroreti, Ta, and Ramis' 2. Twice year, in remarkable example of ancient architectural precision, sunlight penetrates the temple's long corridor and illuminates three of the statues, leaving Ta, the god associated with the underworld, in darkness. This phenomenon occurs around February 22nd and October 22nd. Nearby stands smaller but equally elegant temple dedicated to the goddess Hather and Queen Nefertari. Its facade features six statues, four of Ramis' two and two of Nefertitari, each nearly the same height. An unusual honor for queen in Egyptian art. Inside, columns are decorated with the face of Hatherther, symbolizing music, joy, and motherhood. In the 1960s, the construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge Abu symbol beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser. In an extraordinary international effort led by UNESCO, the temples were carefully cut into massive blocks and relocated about 65 meters higher and 200 meters in land. Between 1964 and 1968, engineers dismantled and reconstructed the entire complex, preserving one of humanity's greatest cultural treasures. Today, Abu Symbol is one of Egypt's most visited archaeological sites and symbol of both ancient ingenuity and modern preservation. The temples stand not only as monuments to Ramis' 2, but also as testament to humanity's determination to protect its shared heritage. Carved from rock, aligned with the sun, and reborn through modern engineering, Abu Symbol remains place where history, art, religion, and science meet in spectacular harmony. What's your The small temple of Abu symbol often called the temple of Queen Nefertari is one of the most beautiful monuments built by the Egyptian pharaoh Rammeses 2 during the 13th century B.C.E. It stands beside the larger temple at Abu Symbol near the modern waters of Lake Nasser in southern Egypt. Ramis' 2 constructed this smaller temple around 1250 B.CE and dedicated it to his beloved wife Nephertari and to the goddess Hatherther. The temple is remarkable because it is one of the very few monuments in ancient Egypt where queen is given nearly equal prominence with pharaoh. In most Egyptian temples, queens appear much smaller than the king, but here the statues of Nefertari are the same height as those of Rammeses 2, showing her exceptional importance. The facade of the temple is carved directly into the sandstone cliff. It displays six colossal standing statues each about 10 tall. Four statues represent Rammeses 2 while two represent Queen Nefertari. They stand between the legs of the larger statues of the king accompanied by smaller figures of royal children. The equal scale of the queen's statue symbolically reflects her status and the king's devotion to her. Inside the temple contains hyper style hall supported by pillars decorated with images of the goddess Hather often shown with cow ears. The walls are covered with reliefs showing Ramis' 2 and Nefertitari presenting offerings to Egyptian gods. Scenes also depict the queen playing the cyist, sacred musical instrument associated with Hatherther, emphasizing the temple's religious dedication. At the back of the temple lies the sanctuary where statue of Hather once stood carved into the rock. The temple functioned as place of worship for Hatherther and celebrated the royal couple's divine connection to the gods. Like the larger temple nearby, the temple of Nefertitari faced major threat in the 1960s when the construction of the Aswan High Dam created Lake Nasser. Rising waters would have submerged the temples forever. After the long journey to Abu Symbol, we relaxed aboard the Blues Shadow 3 top deck. The views of the Nile River from on board were beautiful and relaxing at the same time. Heat. Heat. Kombo tour at night offers very different and atmospheric experience compared to daytime visits. The Kombo temple located on the east bank of the Nile near Aswan is dedicated to two gods, Sobuk, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon-headed god. At night, the temple is often illuminated with soft lights that highlight its symmetrical design and detailed reliefs, creating mysterious and almost magical ambiencece. The quieter evening hours mean fewer tourists, allowing you to explore the temple's unique dual structure at your own pace. You can see the carvings, hieroglyphs, and the reliefs depicting offerings, rituals, and medical instruments more clearly when they are gently lit. Some night tours include short Nile cruise, offering views of the temple from the water under moonlight, which adds serene perspective and excellent photo opportunities. Guides on night tours often share stories about the temple's history. The dual worship of Sobek and Horus and the connection to ancient Egyptian medicine and fertility. If you enjoy history with touch of dramatic scenery, night tour at Kombo provides an unforgettable and atmospheric experience that is very different from the daytime crowds. got my immobilized. At night, we mustered up the strength to celebrate what was historic day. Tomorrow, we will continue our journey exploring new places.
