fossils are important Clues to the history of our world scientists called paleontologists look for fossils in layers of rock they study the fossils to learn more about the earth and its plants and animals from many years ago not all plants and animals that die turn into fossils in fact most do not to make fossil plant or dead animal must be quickly buried in soil mud or sand before it rots or is eaten once buried minerals dissolved in the groundwater slowly replace the animal's body tissue these dissolved minerals eventually Harden into stone when you look at fossil you may think you're looking at the animal's actual bones instead you're looking at rock in the exact shape and size of the animal's bones there are several different kinds of fossils sometimes plant or animal just leaves an imprint behind it's called mold fossil imagine pressing leaf or shell into soft clay or mud and then removing it you would see the shape of the leaf or shell pressed into the mud if the mud hardened into rock it would become mold fossil sometimes an imprint or mold left by plant or animal is filled with minerals that Harden into rock when this happens it's called cast fossil if you've ever made sand castle at the beach then you've made cast when you fill the bucket or mold with sand and turn it over your Castle keeps the shape of the container not all fossils are of an animal's actual body paleontologists study other Clues animals leave behind like Footprints and nests these are called trace fossils by studying trace fossils we can learn about how animals lived true form fossil is not made of stone like most fossils it is the actual preserved body of an animal this happens when the animal gets caught in sticky sap that turns into Amber is frozen in ice or trapped in tar pit the animal's body cannot Decay and is preserved this video was created by La Fontaine of knowledge for lesson materials that go along with the video be sure to check the link in the video description and subscribe to my channel for more videos like this
