hey it's Natasha today I'm going to show you this Evan Moore skill sharpener spell and write grade five and I'm going to show you inside and tell you some benefits of it and how we are loving it so this is the grade five for this spell in right skull sharpeners however it is available in pre-k all the way to sixth grade there's also other skill sharpeners books like critical thinking grammar and punctuation reading geography Math and Science skill sharpeners is wonderful because it is in full color now this spell and write grade 5 book it has 12 different units and so each of the 12 units is based on fun theme and includes story or article spelling list spelling activities grammar and punctuation exercises writing skills and test practice and that's exactly why chose this for my daughter for spelling because didn't want just spelling program specifically for my daughter thought she would really enjoy this because she is kind of natural speller and so it can get bit boring just writing the same words over and over again that she already knows how to spell so chose this because figured for her even if she knew how to spell most of the words that would be okay because this would be working on other skills as well but did bump up grade for her she is in grade four and bumped her up to grade five because of that but if you're not sure what grade your child should use suggest going on the Evan Moore website because you can look at their samples and you can look at the word list and figure out which level would be best for your child so that's exactly what did and will link that below where you can go to see these the 12 units that this covers is baseball by the Numbers true American hero imagination or reality Lance Armstrong tricks of the trade helping page great kid inventions pollution problems looks can be deceiving the life of colonial child the sticky truth and The Uninvited Guest now you will notice on here that each unit has spelling skills reading skills grammar and punctuation skills and writing skills and at least here in the top in the table of contents what skills in each area is being covered in that unit and absolutely love that in addition you'll probably have noticed that although this says it covers spelling grammar punctuation writing and test practice it also has science and history thrown in as well because of the units themselves here's an example for unit one spelling skills are going to be working on short spelling themed vocabulary and visual memory reading skills is word meaning and context clues grammar and punctuation skills declarative interaction interrogative imperative and exclamatory sentences and ending punctuation and writing skills are going to be doing an acrostic poem and descriptive paragraph and as you can see the skills that they're working on in each unit are different so in unit two the writing skills are opinion and friendly letter and unit three their creative story in newspaper article you know four interview questions and acrostic poem five description and Commercial so that's just an example they're covering different skills through each unit now there's 144 pages so if you're using this as part of your homeschool curriculum which am you could really do this however you want and that's another reason love this book because it is not scheduled out by day so you could do one page day for 144 days that's about four day week school week or you could do one unit week and have this be 12-week program or you could just do this five days week and get finished with it sooner really however you want but actually love that there's no days attached to the worksheets let me give you look at what unit looks like so this one is baseball by the numbers so here they're reading all about baseball and then here they're finding which spelling words are in this passage that they're reading and as you can see it's engaging so it's not just page of text but they've got the little baseballs and the Little Numbers about each point and then on the next page they have their spelling practice so read and spell copy and spell and spell it again and then on the corner you can see here that it lists the skills that this page is working on and every single page is like that and so that's really awesome too because you can see directly what skills they're working on so then we get over here and we have word hunt and then can you find it so they're finding the correctly spelled word here Make Your Mark and so they're figuring out which type of sentence this is so declarative interrogative imperative or exclamatory and it gives the definition of each type of sentence here so if your student was not already introduced to this concept that's okay because the information is here and so they're learning those grammar skills right along with their spelling and then what's missing so they have to read the passage and fill in the missing word so that's closed reading activity and then we have spell Moodle so she had to write all the words on the drawing and so that was pretty fun and then we have poetry time where she wrote an acrostic poem and then write it where she wrote paragraph and then she had to edit her work as well and did help her edit her work and then on the last page which she hasn't done this one yet you're going to test your skills so you're going to answer these questions to see how you've mastered those skills that you've learned this week and so it's not just spelling it is literally all the skills that they were working on this week as far as the punctuation and grammar and all of that and then they're going to have spelling test and so you the teacher will have to dictate those spelling words and then here they're going to write the sentence correctly so they're going to fix the spelling mistakes fix the capitalization and punctuation and notice at the bottom it says assessment one now let me flip to the back because there is spot to record how they do on the test your skills section and so thought this was pretty awesome too so it gives each of the 12 units and then the test your score skills score and then the spelling test score so this record form is pretty great if you have to keep records for your state homeschool requirements this is really great also these pages are really easy to tear out so you could simply tear out the assessment page and keep it for your portfolio if you didn't want to keep the whole book but you needed you know proof for your your State's homeschool laws the units all flow similarly but of course the activities and especially the writing activities will be different but here we have true American hero so this unit is about Harriet Tubman and then just goes through all the different activities again with the skills on the top and then they're writing here and of course the test your skills page which has those grammar and punctuation and all of that and then they're spelling tests here and then write the sentence correctly here so I'm going to quickly flip through this book as you can see you know here they're learning about common and and proper nouns compound words past present and future so this book is super fun also you will notice that all of the units are color coded so that's also really nice it's just very visually appealing it's very engaging and the kids aren't overwhelmed there's not too much information on one page and just like this so they're writing about invention and invention and this looks like you know some sort of invention but they get to write there rather than just having blank lines so just those little touches that really make this fun after the test your skills record form we have pull out spelling lists now this is great so what you can do is you can pull out these pages and cut up these lists and you can put them on your refrigerator or you could use laminate them and use them as bookmark for that week so your kid is constantly seeing the words however you want to do it and you can also use this when you're dictating that spelling test you can use these also to dictate those spelling tests then we have the answer key so there's answers for every single page here so this also would be great for car schooling or anytime you need your child to be doing some independent work so even if you're not using it as full spelling curriculum like we are if you just want to have workbooks that your child can do independently without you and be working on some great academic skills this would be great for that too but absolutely love the skill sharpener series from Eva Moore they really hit it out of the park feel like with this spell and write book as you can see it is myriad of skills and Concepts that they learn through this program hope this was helpful and will talk to you soon
