so you probably seen this plant on top-five list of low light house plants or plants that even black thumb can take care of it's peace lily and today we're gonna be repotting and propagating hello beautiful people my name is Brian and welcome back to another episode of this is plant and know know before you start saying it it's been while but I'm back and have lot of new videos that I'm very excited to be making and hopefully they're gonna be coming out little bit more frequently this time but thank you thank you for sticking around it really means lot to me so let's get on with the video then so the plant next to me is called spat phylum also commonly known as pea slowly this one's different variety actually I'm 85% sure it's Domino it's lighter green and it's like pasties it'll don't know if you can see it like some variegation some white and it's little lighter than the normal peace lily you might find at the shop right or something and it's beautiful so before we actually start repotting and propagating let's go over some general requirements for peace lilies so while peace lilies can tolerate low light they prefer or thrive best in bright and direct light spathiphyllum also prefer moist soil but they can generally tolerate slightly drying out of it speaking of soil they're gonna be able to tolerate almost any type of soil so as long as the pH is neutral you'll be fine so regular potting mix is fine spathiphyllum prefer warm and humid environment but they can generally tolerate like you know slightly cooler and low humidity one - like if you have it's inside during the winter or whatever it'll be fine and as nutrients go normal fertilizing regiment will pretty much do so that means like more in the summer and definitely less or none during the winter but to follow the directions in your indoor fertilizer all right so let's start repotting start by massaging the outside of the container and then hold on to the bottom of the container and hold on to the base of the plant and just give it good tug and just pull this one was fairly easy to remove because my goodness look at all those roots heard all the soil go it was like 95% roots in there my god that's insane okay so most of the time yeah you're gonna find the healthiest roots on the outskirts or the edges of the container because of few factors that just had up over time one reason is that when roots grow they're just gonna keep going until they bump up against something okay and then they start redirecting redirecting themselves or reach certain length so that's why you kind of generally see the roots start spiraling around the bottom of container so air is also another factor it's also more prevalent along the edges of the container because as soil dries it starts from the outside and works its way in that's why you'll generally see soil starts separating from the edges of the container and the roots that are on the edges of the container one side is getting air and then one side of the root is getting the moisture from within the soil and it gots the best of both worlds but I'll leave that for another video because that's kind of bigger topic on its own let me know if you guys want me to talk about it leave me comment below so during this repotting process this is the best time for you to just really get in there and remove all the dead foliage and it's also the best time is to ease and score and break up all the old roots so you could promote some new growth so at first was just planning on removing all the old soil and replace it with my own mix so could preserve the fullness because wanted this to go into special container actually but then realized you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna split it up I'm gonna have two plants and each one will have the opportunity to grow full on its own and over time it's just gonna be full anyway which then leads us to how to propagate spathiphyllum but before get to that if you're finding this video helpful please consider giving me like and subscribe it really helps YouTube and me know that I'm doing pretty okay and helps me to keep making these videos alright thank you so to propagate spathiphyllum we're gonna need to use method called division and we do this because Espace of islands root system is rhizomatous and rhizomes are basically horizontal plant stems that grow sideways underground and are capable of having their own root and shrewd systems these rhizomes also store starches and nutrients for the plant so an easy way to think about this system is to take for example the monstera at anthony that we were propagating in the earlier video so imagine this long piece of advancing instead of growing vertically it's growing sideways okay underground so let's say it starts here and then it grows this way from the nodes remember the nodes from this node it grows it shoots up shoots and then from underneath it grows roots and once it's done with that it keeps going sideways and just keeps growing shoots and roots so if you think about it that way just like we did dancin or pathos all we have to do is cut in between the nodes and in this path of violence case yeah the nodes or clusters they're gonna be lot closer than they are on regular vining plant but the idea is still the same all you have to do is divide those clusters so separate it you're good use knife or you could use your scissors what like to do is just feel it and just like break it apart like I'm doing here and as long as you end up getting root with one of the clusters then you're pretty much good but just in case that you accidentally took one and my god it doesn't have root it may actually still be able to grow because the cool thing about rhizomes are that as long as you have piece of rhizome it has the potential to grow roots so you could think about it like it's it's it's cutting or something so this part is pretty fun and little intimidating when was starting out so it's okay just go slowly and it's actually really fun and you'll start feeling it and you'll get better now you're done dividing and just pot it up as you normally would so here I'm just using my own normal mix the is my 50% potting mix like 49% foyer and the rest being vermiculite perlite some sand and some tree bark and stuff pot it up into two smaller pots and think it was pretty okay give us very good shower after you're done repotting and then you can put it into your specialized container so that video that you've been watching me repot is actually about month or so ago and the reason why wanted it full was so could put it in this special container I'm so excited just because of beautiful pot but yeah got this at the bathroom section of the home goods that frequent and think it looks pretty darn cool so anyway hey that's the it's heavy because put rocks inside just because had like bunch of rocks spare guess yeah so that's it for the video hope you guys enjoyed hope you guys learn something leave me comment below telling me your care tips for spathiphyllum and please leave like subscribe the algorithm and thank you alright I'll see you guys in the next one bye you
