today we're sketching three-dimensional shapes whatup friends we're on here thank you for joining me in another video today want to do something little special so want us to work together on sketching three-dimensional shapes and I'm gonna make it little interesting because there are quite few videos out there on drawing cubes and pyramids and ovals and things like this to talk about how to create sense of depth and three-dimensionality so we're gonna go bit over that but then want to share with you funny sort of exercise or doodle session that used to do with myself just since was really young and just intuitively did it because enjoyed it but when think back at it it really improved my visual perception and skills it's just something so simple that anyone can do it and it's simple exercise that anyone can do and just really improve the way you perceive objects and your ability to rotate them in mind okay now I'm gonna do quite bit in this video so if you want if you want me to focus on specific topic in the future let me know in the comment below know I'm kind of all over the place but then think it wraps up really nicely and then we can think zoom in on specific topic if you want to okay so don't forget to leave it in comment below if you want me to focus on something specific and with that being said let's get started okay so let's get started and the goal here is to really just have fun and sort of practice our ability to understand three-dimensional shapes and draw them okay I'll be using the new favor castle pen do need to and some of you mentioned in the comments do still need to demonstrate sort of water resistance or waterproof test with watercolor just so that we can better know if this can really endure watercolor but that's for another video you can use pen or anything pencil or anything else you want I'll be working with pen okay so basically the simplest three-dimensional shape that you can create it's just sort of ball okay so in this case we have this it's just circle now without any shadows or anything it's not even ball so I'm just gonna add small shadow here to the side okay but this is not really that interesting you know you can play around with it and create sort of an egg egg like shapes sort of ellipses or ovals which is nice but that's not really too interesting so what want to work on is just the next kind of best thing and the easiest shape to work on is cube now the cube is very simple actually did few videos on that but the cube is very simple to draw so basically it's like drawing the simplest way of drawing it is just if you draw two kind of parallelograms or trapezoid or whatever you want to call that shape kind of like this and then you sort of connect all of the corners and then you get transparent cube okay there's tons of ways to do this you can just sort of draw square then pull vertical lines connect them and you get cube now where the real value comes from is practicing drawing the cube in many different angles okay so if we look at the cube straight from the front like this the way the arrow indicates what we will get is just square okay like this or sort of rectangular depending on the cube now if we look bit more from the right so think about it this way we're looking at it dead-on if we look bit to the right we're gonna see little bit more of its right side again this is what want to show you now so we still have that kind of square shape but now we can see bit of its right side okay now the more we turn it the less we're gonna see from the front and the more we're gonna see from the side so we have sort of little bit less of this and little bit more of this side okay and the more we turn it we will get much less from the left side and more of the right side okay so if this is the right side let me just put in some sort of shadow on it just to indicate where it is okay and you can see it's sort of the more we look from the right the more we see this site now let's take into consideration also looking from above so if we'll take this cube and we'll just look at it from above we're gonna see bit more of the top plane okay so this is what want to do now so I'm just gonna do it little larger just this is sort of an intro now we're gonna make it little larger so basically to get better view of the top this line is gonna have to be squeezed and not be completely horizontal but rather bit diagonal okay then this line same thing it's gonna be bit of an angle this and now we get to see using parallel lines to this one and parallel lines to this one we get to see bit of the top okay and we can also see that left side and the right side okay and this is the right side from earlier on that kept sort of darkening this side and the more we change our angle the more we're gonna see of that top plane okay so if we look more from above this line is gonna be even more diagonal and this line also is as well it's gonna be little more diagonal and then you get this sort of cube look and think really good exercise will be just to try out as many variations as possible maybe even putting it in perspective so if you have one point perspective meaning we get closer to the cube enough so that the distance of us from this area will be significantly different from this area what happens in this example and will make more detailed video about that because that's bit of more complex object so if we look at the cube let's say like in this angle from far away it looks just like we did here you have sort of square and then the side side plane but the closer we get to it the more significant the difference in distance is between us and the front plane and the back side so what will happen is that you'll sort of get sight that's moving towards vanishing point just like in the principles of perspective okay so you'll get this sort of change in the way these lines work and and this is when draw buildings it's all based on that the more extreme it will get the more you will see the soul let's just create another one for fun and here will really put perspective into consideration and you can see here sort of these lines move all towards this imaginary imaginary vanishing point is what it's called okay and will make more detailed video about that promise now this so this is for the cube and think it's really good exercise to play around with it move it around try and imagine it from different location from different angles and maybe also working with transparent cube from time to time so you can kind of turn it around in your head and try and draw it now you won't always succeed it's not really easy if you don't have that sort of perception but with practice you'll be able to do that so this for the cube now we have some other shapes for example one simple shape is pyramid so we can have this sort of pyramid that has let's see if can get it to look properly so we have this pyramid for example now this pyramid has four sides it has one meaning four sides on the on the top okay I'm gonna show you what mean in moment but there is one two and then if turn it into transparent structure you can see there is one here two here three here and 4 here so if we look at it from the very top we'll get to see something like this this is the pointy Center and we have one into like this and this is it so for example if light would come from this direction you'll get sort of heavy shadow on this side these ones are gonna be little darker but not that dark and you will have cast shadow that sort of the the pyramid casts to this side okay now if we move that bit in space so let's imagine we're lowering our angle we're gonna get to see more of this side I'm just gonna draw it little larger so more from this side little less from this side so we'll get something like this and these sides stay kind of similar and that way you can see it just feels like we went little lower in space okay but we're still looking at it quite from the top now if we will lower the angle bit more we'll get to see even more of this side here and maybe barely anything from this side and just bit of the side view so when you get really to side view like from here you'll only see kind of triangle okay now in addition to this pyramid there's another type of pyramid with three sides so this this one is not really I'm not sure if there is any structure that's actually built that way on earth so let me know in the comment below if you know of one but anyway it's this kind of thing okay now the main difference this is top view the main difference with this one is that the sides have different have there's just less sides one two three as opposed to one two three four and so the angle between in the base of the pyramid will be different so the base here is maybe this is better way to explain it the base is triangle okay and then from the very centre if we sort of raise line like this that's perpendicular to the surface and we connect it to the sides to all of the sides we're gonna get pyramid okay with this being the front wall the wall that's that we're facing same thing with the square so we can draw sort of like this kind of shape and if we find the center and the center can be found very easily by the way by just connecting these two okay like this we're gonna point just put dot in there raise it up okay using an imaginary line and then connect it to all sides of the cube and you can see my lines are wobbly that's perfectly fine so the main difference is in the angles here here we have ninety degree angle and here we have smaller angle okay that's the main difference so hopefully all of this makes sense now I'm gonna rearrange the paper bit and want to show you my sort of my my take on this exercise and how you can apply it because maybe some of you can already do all of that okay okay so the thing I'm gonna demonstrate to you now funny enough started doing as kid okay loved doodling these kinds of shapes when was younger now what used to do is create imaginary three-dimensional shapes and what do mean by that would just make very weird sort of scribbling shape and then I'll imagine I'm giving it three dimensionality so what would do is just drop some lines like this and kind of connect them using the line that follows deer's to the previous line put okay and that way you get very random three-dimensional shape and used to do this one all the time and this is really good practice because it trains you in your eyes and your hand to follow the shape you already did and sort of give it bit of height now why is this great because very common mistake see with beginners is for example if you want to draw cylinder shape like like sort of soda soda can so what you'll get is lot of people do this they draw the top part like that then they draw the sides and then the bottom is like this and this is not the way it should be this area should follow the structure of this unless the shape is one looked at from the side will look kind of like it's really hard to do that but I'll try it like this okay this is what this would look like from the side okay maybe from sort of 3/4 it will look something like this okay but nothing really looks like this except for the French frys kind of packaging you know usually if you draw like soda can or something like this it's just gonna be circle two lines for the sides and another circle okay now if you remember showed you bit of perspective here so we can put this one in perspective - so what the way to do this is just by drawing circle then the lines for the sides go bit inwards like that okay and then you add this round at the top of the buck part at the bottom okay now again this happens when our distance our point of view to this area is significantly different from this area so you usually won't see you will see it bit with with soda cans if you hold him close to your to your eyes but where you will see this is sometimes you may see like construction works and then you'll have this sort of open pipes lying around somewhere and you may see them sort of moving in perspective okay if you look at it more the front this is interesting so let's imagine there's hole on both sides so if you look at it bit more kind of from the front you'll even get to see the opening on the other side okay so this sort of like tunnel that you can go through almost now just want to add one more touch to this sort of exercise and you can add shading to that okay so you can do sort of your scribbly kind of shape and just try and getting it to be three-dimensional and then you can just add an random light source or for example light comes from here and you can kind of just draw this shadow cast shadow or maybe shadow on the object itself and you can kind of imagine what areas are gonna be in the shadow what areas are gonna be more well lit and this is just really fun exercise you can do this also with kind of artificial think so for example just add bit of shadows like this and this really trains your ability to kind of hatch and do these kinds of lines it's just very fun thing to do when you doodle or when you just kind of kind of sketch for fun this is an exercise used to do when was really young and it's just very fun you can rotate the angles so you can work to the sides you can also skew the shape bit so that it actually has bit of weirdness elementary this is really all just experimentation doing this lot and and on regular basis will really improve your abilities to sketch and to draw what you see because again the basis for buildings is this it's the the cube so if see building and want to sort of draw it or even even as preparation for watercolour painting that's basically sort of cube cube elongated cube and with Windows with some more details you can see here maybe there's an awning here maybe there's restaurant at the bottom but the concept stays the same it's just this sort of building there's an antenna whatever it is and it's just so simple once you get the sort of basic shapes to it okay now went through lot in this video so what I'm curious to know is if there's anything you want me to dive even deeper want you to let me know okay maybe you want us to sort of analyze the cube on many different angles and just zoom in on that maybe the pyramids maybe this weird sort of exercise maybe the shading part let me know in comment below if you're you want to know more about any of these specifics okay kind of dumped lot of things at you so so you just if you want something in specific or something in particular if you want us to dive into any concept that has to do with three-dimensional shapes let me know in comment below okay really hope you enjoyed this demo let's change the angle and wrap up this video our good friends here are all of our little doodles here hope you enjoyed this video and again as you saw went through quite bit of things here if you want me to make specific video on one topic or even just one specific shape like the cube or like pyramid or maybe something that you want to bring up will be happy to do so and we can sort of really analyze it more deeply and really figure out things together and learn how to portray it in different angles in different situations and maybe even different light conditions okay so really enjoyed making this video for you hope you enjoyed it as well if you enjoyed it don't forget to subscribe here on youtube and also follow me on snapchat in instagram where share more things on day to day basis especially my outside outdoors on location sketching and painting processes and so this is it hope to see you again in the next video and until then take care
