if you grow mango tree from seed it should look something like this in about two months here's how to do it so when you're done eating the mango wrap the seed in paper towel and leave it to dry overnight because it's too slippery and even more difficult to work with when it's moist but fun fact the mango seed is actually inside of this husk like pit and this is the easiest way that found to get it out so when it's dry use scissors to cut along this long seam like Edge where the two halves come together like this and then take some bent nose pliers or needle nose pliers and gently stick them in like this small opening here near the top or the bottom of the pit and just start pulling it apart like this and then once you get good portion of it open you can start to use your hands to finish pulling it apart and the seed will just come right out and you could just go ahead and plant the mango seed with just the pit but this way is faster and if you see this thin paper like thing coming off the seed that's the protective coating if it's coming off you can remove the rest of it like did it's fine so now it's time to grow the seed wrap the seed in moist paper towel and put it in resealable plastic bag and when say moist mean soak the paper towel in water and then wring it all out that's really all the moisture it'll need for germination check on the seed every few days to make sure that the paper towel is still moist and add little bit more water if needed the seed should start pushing out root within week or so and if you wanted to you could plant the seed as soon as you start to see the root grow actually forgot about it for month and this is what it looked like after took it out of the bag so would say plant the seed within two to four weeks after you see growth now as for planting would suggest keeping your mango tree in container if you don't live in the ideal environment to grow mango tree plan on growing mine in container for as long as it'll stay alive and I'm planting this seed in 2.9 quart pot to start with now make sure that there are enough holes at the bottom of your pot for good drainage your pot needs to have good drainage and as for the potting mix or potting soil mango trees need to be planted in well draining mix or soil whether you're growing in ground or in container and if you choose to grow and ground depending on the type of soil you have you may need to amend it and if you choose to grow in container and buy pre-made potting mix add little bit more perlite to it just to help with drainage I'm planting this mango seed in mix of peat moss coconut coarse Shale perlite compost worm castings and more you do not need all that but prefer to make my own potting mix and use what have now mango trees need at least six to eight hours of full sun day keep mine in spot that gets full sun but it gets too hot and stressful for plants so keep it covered with cheap shade cloth most of the time and it's doing just fine and here we are this is the mango tree four days after planting and the tree gets watered at least once or twice week depending on how hot it is and if it's not raining and six days after planting the leaves are really starting to take off in growth I've been fertilizing my mango tree once week with Miracle Grow liquid fertilizer and recently started adding few scoops of warm castings to it and about two months in your mango tree should look something like this but you should know it's long waiting game for fruit apparently it can take at least five years for the tree to start producing fruit and even when it does it may or may not be something you like so if you want something you know you'll like you may want to look into getting grafted tree and lastly good luck growing mango trees from seed hope you get some sweet mangoes out of it don't be discouraged about how long you have to wait plant the seed now time will fly by
