hi everybody and welcome to video on text analysis in this video will talk about comparisons or similes you can use both both Expressions here will show you how to interpret them and then have model interpretation of comparison for you so actually can show my students how do it and have two killer tips that help you with comparisons and similes now we're only talking about the comparisons and the similes here if you want if you're looking for whole whole block of videos on text analysis you can go to our homepage which is www. build interactive.com and click on English and you will be taken to the page where you can actually select those videos we have videos on stylistic devices we have videos on the typical things that you need for text analysis it's like character interpretation for the literary text for example we have we show you how to interpret cartoon we show you how to make composition or comment and we have mediation and listening comprehension so you can actually have all this you can find this on our homepage and here we stick with the comparisons but first need to tell you like couple of Basics and that's the same thing for the interpretation of any stylistic device it falls into Three Steps step one identify the stylistic device that obviously as as long as you haven't found any you you're not able to interpret stylistic device and this is the part where it's difficult for me to help you practice makes perfect you need to practice this if you want to find stylistic devices then just get practice you need to be able to spot from reading text spot stylistic devices they kind of jump out at you and you you need practice for that step two which obviously is the most important step is is you interpret the stylistic device in in in its particular context because contexts change obviously and don't forget step three and this is explain its function which us usually is explain the effect that stylistic device has on the reader step one step two step three please keep this in mind and now we turn to the comparisons or similes comparison is an image and there's four things you need to remember for the images it's the comparison it's the metaphor it's the personification and it's the symbol all right those four so comparisons have one for you it's right here in that sentence the worldwide web is like the Wild Wild West the worldwide web is like the Wild Wild West and now let's just let me actually take you by the hand and walk you through this now when you do comparison there is one thing which is quite important you need to take that sentence and look for the two parts of your comparison part one is the part that you want to compare the part you want to compare is part one which obviously here is the worldwide web and part two is the part to which you compare and this here is the Wild Wild West we want to compare part one to part two and we want to compare the worldwide web to the worldwide West this is something you have to understand all right good so we continue and now all you have to do sounds easy doesn't it you take the qualities of part two you take the qualities the the characteristics of part two and you transfer them to part one in this case take the characteristics of the Wild Wild West and transfer these to the worldwide web and then your job is done good let's do that slowly step by step now okay step two which is interpret the stylistic device in in its particular context now for the comparison step two falls into and just as I've I've just said it take the Wild Wild West which is part two it's the one to which we compare and look for characteristics found the following characterist characteristics that's important for me for me the Wild Wild West is often dangerous it is definitely widely unregulated there is Outlaws and gunfights there's shootouts and bloodshed and it's also place to get rich Al for some people you know think about gold and have no idea doesn't matter so these are the qualities that find for the Wild Wild West and that is this is my first part of step two you have different qualities maybe and you can actually continue that list and add some more that's it's up to you it's your interpretation this is just my stuff so now of course comes that step two which is take these qualities and transfer them to part one which here is my worldwide web so have all these qualities it's often dangerous it's unregulated also place to get rich and transfer them to the worldwide web and this is interpreting comparison in its particular context and then my job is almost done have to write it down of course obviously but basically that's it okay that's all you have to do all right so two killer tips before we actually get to the model interpretation first if you want to find comparison simly you want to watch out in your text for words like like or as because they're often used to show how similar two things are and then it's often comparison killer tip watch out for words like like or as second killer tip transfer the qualities of part two to part one which is the qualities of part two remember the part two is the one to which we compare and part one is the one that we want to compare find the qualities of part two and then CH throw them over part one and write the whole thing down and this is exactly what we'll do now so here is model interpretation of exactly that stylistic device of exactly that comparison step one identify your stylistic device the comparison or the simile in line four is easily found let's make it line four it's it's line 20 doesn't matter the author uses the word like to show how similar the worldwide web and the Wild Wild West are that's it step one identify your stylistic device write it down don't make fuzz be short precise and to the point step two interpret your stylistic device part find the qualities of the wild wild West we had this on the page remember okay this is just my idea in most people's imagination the Wild Wild West was an interesting place no doubt but often characterized by certain danger there were Outlaws gunfights and bloodshed moreover it seemed to have been quite unregulated and lot of people could do pretty much what they wanted you can continue here no end okay but at some point have to stop because want to fit all of this on that page here so have I'm running out of words so to speak of sorry I'm running out of space this is my interpretation this is my idea of the Wild Wild West now take that and just transfer it to the worldwide web and this is what it looks like there's one more thing before start reading here please you you feel free to start new lines okay and start new paragraphs this shows your reader how good you are and how Superior you actually are when you do this started new line after step one which is wild wild west and then in most people's imagination also started new line in between wanted and with this comparison start new lines show your reader that you can actually do this easily and you can even put in some structure okay let's let's start here with his comparison Hector gunana this is just some name for any author with his comparison Hector gunana tells his readers that the worldwide web is exactly like that you remember that was that second paragraph just to give some examples there is no set of laws that regulates correct behavior I'm taking the qualities and I'm putting them over the worldwide web it's easy or if you want to commit cyber crime there is good chance that you will find way not to get caught and selfdefense has topmost priority that is the users themselves are responsible for the information they publish in social networks for example again feel free to continue here put down your own ideas don't follow mine all right okay but basically that's it it's as easy as that start new line and then do step three which is what's the function what's the effect on the reader simile is an image so its main function is to create vivid mental image in the reader's mind everybody has seen movies about the Wild Wild West and scenes from these movies immediately come to mind when we read this comparison step one step two step three and you're finished all right think I've done pretty good job and so we're done now say thanks for watching and see you around next time bye-bye
