how to play Eye In the Sky on guitar by the Alan Parsons Project guitar lesson LESSON

all right so in the sky by Ellen Parsons this one is off of the album of the same name which was released in 1982 and it's just another really good song of his and another great guitar solo like did wouldn't want to be like you earlier and felt should do this one too because the solo was really good in this one course Alan Parsons you know engineered with the Beatles and also Pink Floyd and this album was actually recorded at Abbey Road Studios so there's big Beatles Pink Floyd connection here with him and yeah you can definitely hear it in the music anyways so I'm just going to show you the actual chords of the song before get into the soul so we're in the key of like minor kind of thing okay so we're gonna start in minor and you just guitar jism it's just kind of chunking away though on those five power cord type things and the keeper is like it's kind of doing that line there right she's just no we're hammering glanced like decoy like that normally you'd play it that way but if you bar their finger here then you can manipulate it easier so it's cages string string their first time then the next line is you've got the root in the third you know if you'll want to play that part if you you know if you don't keep work lay on your band you can still play this song no problem so you know one guys and the other guy is okay so and then it eventually it does it twice you might need twice and then it's okay now we got g6 than the minor six right just changing from and then gonna be minor and then so with the melody is hitting that major 7c to play AG major 7 there too right so he's doing it that way and then eventually gets to the court f-sharp minor and then we g6 again due to minor six back to the infrared and that's what the guitar solo is over so all this stuff repeats bunch of times but that's basic like layout of it and there's tons of stuff going on you know there's probably like don't know six or seven guitar tracks and three or four or five keyboard parts and harmonies and just tons of stuff going on and the solo is sketch just over this minor just over ELQ and the keyboard is going like this we've got like it's g6 and b5 it's like an 8-quart but the third and the fifth up to deep root in the third-ranked minor root and third back your first chord and then but root and third so we've got and then the open and open and that just repeats throughout the whole solo except for the first part where he goes like this so that's friggin over but just did it with these two notes just little grace note on that d4 so and then you get into this geon's the court cycle and then and that just repeats over and over so this is what you're soloing over and then there's another good guitar part in there and see Frank it as an oddball and it's just like that's what I'm hearing there okay it's kind of hard to pick it off but I'm pretty sure that's what's happening so it's weird Torchic we've got little finger on g6 and our middle finger on g4 and then we actually don't need to borrow that whole thing we just need the note there they should be it's second to get this because it's never played this and then you got your third finger on e5 and then you just and just repeating and when was doing my demo you know did this part it did that for like I'm in it I'm in it in bit and tell you man my hand was about to fall off you know the tendons in here just absolutely getting crushed so that's what you're soloing over I'm just going to change over my sound and we're gonna start the solo okay so now we're ready for the solo and again it's Ian Berenson playing this part and you know he is really good guitar player this is great solo it's great one to learn even if you know you're not playing this anywhere anytime soon because you can learn so much about how to construct solo how to use our patios we're in minor so we're gonna start out down here that's kind of our patience right and then your you're pentatonic shape right okay so that's what you got to sort of keep in mind so he's gonna start out like this and that's just on d2 little almost like quarter step in right to the open hammer-on into the bina and what I'll do is will get that g-string with my middle finger there and just hold it so I'm not getting any noise right if don't hold it you can get little over to him there if you hold bond it would you know you got nothing that's the first one and then he goes so 5 & 8 to the on 2 and just hold right and then that's what we're going but with bend the next one is so right that's like the third of the minor to the root okay so and now you start the solo and we're going to start it like this and right away that's just really really good right so we've got you know always like to kind of envision these solos based around the core right so if can play it like with my hand in that chord shape that's kind of what's happening there right like so you can see it's all notes in the court or officios right so but he's playing it like lead guitar player full step in on b5 to g3 and then g5 then we've got this minor 7 arpeggio and remember that because that's coming up again right so and then he hits the note - but it's in passing right so and then we do the the exact same arpeggio an octave lower right sure that's very cool right really smart play now we're gonna go right which is the chords have changed now we're on this major seven ish kind of work right so we're gonna do major 7 arpeggio restarting on the sharp which is the major 7 and we're going to the genome and then the third of the chord in the fifth and then we're gonna hit the note which is actually the ninth okay so it's actually you know turning into it g-major 9 arpeggio because we're sort of hitting that there which is the major seventh again hope this isn't too boring but yeah you know the theory behind some of these these solos to me is like it's awesome and it shows you that the theory is not something to be intimidated by theory is it can help you big-time right you know once you kind of get what's going on you can use it to your advantage and you can come up with these awesome sounding Souls okay so let's just do it so far and then we're gonna climb by going and then slide up to be 7 to e5 so right then seven eight and then seven on beat on back to the chord that's all on the chord and then the minor court we're in bend here and now we're thinking you know minor pentatonic position one just like we know this right but we're going right that's the minor third at the to the seventh and think he's he's doing that he's hammering that on you don't have to you could go or slide it in there right but think he's going and then right or same thing to get that note there went and raked into that and then slide that down it's so cool so far like this just what is this like how many bars is don't know four six don't know but just in this short amount of time you can learn ton of stuff by learning the soul so let's take it from the beginning of the solo so you when recorded this on my demo had my compressor on which don't have on now so was getting little more sustained and think had bit more gain to but okay so that's so far it now we're gonna go okay again is supercooling so we're kind of getting that but with the bends strange string on the seventh fret so and then we're going to finish it off by going really nice ending on that you moving on g6 b7 and then okay so that's g6e seven day nine sliding up to the be no on denied and then right so it's important to slide up that first finger there and then third finger here maybe just practice that because that been there is absolutely crucial all the bends you know in this song actually in everything you ever play you know bending is huge if you're bending flat or sharp it's just gonna sink the ship immediately right so bending to pitch is like big big deal with guitar playing right and we're gonna catch the e10 with little fingers then we let the band go do that right it's like those six don't always talk about so there are two threats ok then we're up here in that sort of second position of the pentatonic minor pentatonic right and we kind of hit that note we're doing that one with band right we kind of established the pitch and then we do the vibrato and then it starts to fade out and it'll show you what did after that just kind of you can barely hear them the record right and if you know your cage stuff then you can see that right there right that's sure to be minor the shape the amount of program and then just carried there on and went just coordinates putting in more sort of lose legs and then went kind of stealing bit of tap david gilmour there right so we're spending full and then going past it so we're going forth for the Benz and then just 14 10 12 you know and then you just kind of improvising and doing whatever you want and these are great changes to play over you know really really nice playing over there okay and that's it so let's do that whole solo you you you know whatever you want from there on in right so anyways that's it for this one this is just an excellent solo and it's lesson you know in lead guitar playing and arpeggios and you know playing was feel and moving around the neck like that that lick there you know where he goes from the beginning really mean that is covering an enormous amount of ground with very few notes right and really just great guitar playing really clever and really melodic and just fits exactly the mood of the song all right so hope you get something
