likes on social media seem like new trend but they access very old part of the human brain long before people invented currency we had official forms of social currency study from the University of Michigan found that hunter-gatherers in southern Africa used beads made from ostrich eggs to build and maintain relationships across long distances the beads were found in modern-day lassoo to mountainous country on the east side of southern Africa they appeared to be brought there by human networks since ostriches don't usually venture into the mountains but just to make sure researchers check the egg beads for isotopes that change based on what bird eats they found traces of sedimentary rock from desert down lower in the area this means prehistoric humans crafted ornaments from ostrich eggs to give to their neighbors in other regions according to the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science those groups passed them on to their friends creating chain of relationships that spanned over 600 miles and the system stayed in place for more than 30,000 years the archaeologists say it likely popped up because people needed teamwork to cope with rapid shifts in the climate
