independent reading is how we will replace AR which will be more robust and intive reading structure in the early grades this will promote learning to read and progress into reading to learn in the upper grades book Choice allows students to read any book at their independent level this includes choosing from all areas of interests and genres teachers guide students in book choices to ensure variety and appropriate difficulty students choose books based on their interest which increases motivation and engages students in literature and informational text let's take look at the model that Craven County will be using for reading workshop there are three components independent reading guided reading and literature study all components may start with mini lesson and end with group share our Focus today is on Independent reading kindergartners first and second graders will have section of their Center time to read independently as well as throughout the day the teacher will conference with students every day teachers will conference with students to gain information that will drive other reading instruction teachers may work with students in small groups based on individual needs students will not be limited to reading only books in small confined level students choose books based on interest and reading range teachers conduct many lessons to guide students on selecting appropriate books the five finger rule is one way to help students select books in the classroom library or School library pick is another strategy to use with students when finding just right book instead of the star report which only gave the reading level parents will now have reports about reading growth and how to help at home the report for students in grades K3 is the mclass literacy progress report that you see here on the screen you can obtain these reports in various ways they will be included in your child's progress or report cards available conferences and hopefully online in the near future in grades 48 parents will monitor reading growth through am web reports these are available through parent conferences teachers and parents monitor student reading selections with reading log reading LS are recorded by the teacher either paper pencil or electronically sh
