Fractions are usually less than 1 whole. These are called proper fraction. The numerator is smaller than the denominator. 2/8 of pizza… 1/2 of sandwich But fractions can be bigger than one whole. For example, here we have 3 halves of an orange. 1 half… 2 halves… 3 halves. You can see that 3 halves is larger than one whole because we have 1 whole orange and an extra half. 3 halves is an improper fraction. Improper fractions have numerator larger than the denominator. An improper fraction can also be expressed as mixed number. It’s called mixed number because it’s mix of whole number and fraction. How many wholes do we have? One. How many extra halves do we have? One. One whole and one half. This mixed number is 1 and ½. 1 and half is the same as 3 halves. What fraction have these pizzas been cut into? That’s right, quarters. Let’s count how many quarters we have. 1 quarter, 2 quarters, 3 quarters, 4 quarters, 5 quarters, 6 quarters, 7 quarters, 8 quarters, 9 quarters. We have 9 quarters. This is an improper fraction because the numerator is larger than the denominator. Let’s think about how we could write this mixed number. Remember mixed number is mix of whole and fraction. How many wholes are there? One... two. How many extra quarters are there left? One. The mixed number is 2 and one quarter. Two and one quarter is the same as 9 quarters. Here is another improper fraction. Let’s convert this improper fraction to mixed number. We are working with eighths. Our fraction has 10 of them. 1 eighth, 2 eighths, 3 eighths, 4 eighths, 5 eighths, 6 eighths, 7 eighths, 8 eighths. 8 eighths is one whole. 9 eighths, 10 eighths. There is one whole and 2 eighths. The mixed number is 1 and 2 eighths. Here we have mixed number. It is telling us that we have 3 whole and two thirds. How can we express this as an improper fraction? Let’s count how many thirds we have altogether. How many thirds make up each whole? That’s right, three! So in total we have 11 thirds.
