På mange måder, Sustainability has fundamental and widespread impact on how systems are managed and designed in the 21st century because it will affect everyone and all aspects of our lives as human beings on this planet. That is what we will observe in this video series 1- The meaning of sustainability and the difference between sustainability and sustainable development Sustainability is term of Latin origin called “sustinere” and means “preservation, resilience, follow-up,” the meaning of the word in the contemporary Arabic glossary implies in short the continuance of something, and its endurance. lot of people around the world do not know much about sustainability and the few who think they know – all that comes to their mind when hearing the word “sustainability,” is recycling waste, solar panels, electric cars, reducing the use of plastic, etc They believe that these issues are what sustainability is all about The cause behind this is primarily the media and lack of informed knowledge. All that has led to the pulverizing/pummeling /crushing of the concept of sustainability as well as the whole issue thereby reducing it to just small matters and making society dive into details that, over time, became concepts Still, the truth is that the idea is much deeper than that Let us first clarify the difference between sustainability and sustainable development This episode needs lot of concentration since it contains lot of information that you may be hearing for the first time And, you may even need to watch the video more than once The definition of sustainability is not as simple as it may seem researchers often encounter ambiguity and pluralism in the concept of sustainability That in itself is big problem because it counters the existence of diverse, inactive or sometimes contradictory definitions that have made it difficult to choose an appropriate concept for sustainability Even most research work whose content includes sustainability does not specify what it is which ultimately constitutes an apparent mistake in the methodology used All of this has led researchers to avoid identifying the meaning of sustainability or studying it indirectly by exploring the social and environmental variables of some systems Moreover, the lack of complete clarity about the concept of sustainability and clear path for working has led to many problems for researchers That, in turn, impedes the implementation of the concept because the concept in itself is not clear And, the fact that the impact of that concept is not clear generates contradictory interpretations on the subject and therefore affects the validity of studies in this regard Sustainability: Simply speaking, it is the ability to withstand and in other words, an expression for the possibility of supporting specific issue Likewise, it is the ability to maintain the desired end product of lifestyle. Hence, sustainability is model for thinking about future in which environmental, societal, and economic considerations are balanced as an effort to improve the quality of life Therefore, to achieve true sustainability we need to strike balance between the three factors of sustainability; economic, environmental, and social, in equal harmony Remember, mentioned five definitions of sustainability And, if you notice they are all beautiful words but they do not express anything practical that can be done or that could achieve specific goal according to comprehensive concept In any case, we will return to this point later but remember if asked what sustainability is, all that you will remember will be what you heard from me now But if ask you what you can do by that understanding of the definition of sustainability the reply will be…. nothing! we will return to this point later As for sustainable development There are more than 200 definitions of sustainable development Still, simply say sustainable development "is strategy for achieving development that enables the fulfillment of the needs of the current generations And, at the top of the list will be the poor among them, the achievement of their well-being without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their needs." The term sustainable development first appeared in publication issued by the International Union for the Protection of the Environment in 1980 The term was widely circulated after it was reused in report issued by the Brundtland Commission about the United Nations World Environment and Development Committee That was under the supervision of the Prime Minister of Norway at that time - "Gro Harlem Brundtland" in 1987 and this document was called "Our Common Future The purpose of the document was to warn against the negative environmental consequences of economic development and globalization to provide solutions to the problems arising from industrialization and population growth The concept of sustainable development came as pattern of growth and development that meets the protests and requirements of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own personal disputes Many definitions of sustainability have started to appear since that time among which the most common ones: Sustainability for humans is the ability to preserve the quality of life in the long run which in turn depends on the conservation of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources." Another definition says, "The ability to continue specific behavior indefinitely." However, this report did not define precisely what are the needs and requirements that people want to maintain What does “the ability to preserve the quality of life in the long run" mean? And how do we achieve this in practice? As well as, many other things that unlikely to be carried out or measured and to abbreviate what has been said in just few words: "The ambiguity of the concept of sustainability hinders its application." That was until doctor from Sweden intervened Dr. Karl-Henrik Robert He was Swedish oncology (cancer) doctor and worked as "Head of the Division of Clinical Hematology and Oncology at the Department of Medicine at the Huddinge Hospital, Stockholm." He notice several things: Before knowing any specific definition for cancer as disease, patients were dying below average expectancy age Each doctor was diagnosing different illness according to the symptoms portrayed by the patient There were lot of problems because they did not know the root cause of cancer and, as such, tried everything possible blood transfusion, antibiotics but all that did not have any effect and all patients died. 2 - There was no cooperation between doctors or the different specializations because there was nothing to bring them together. 3- They were unable to determine the exact work of doctors surgeons, nurses, medical analysis doctors, etc. Then, came the definition and the root cause of cancer through science which explained that one stem cell doubles from 1 then 2 and then 4 and then 8 and so on and continues to grow until it kills the entire body After that, they managed to treat cancer by killing the affected stem cell without killing the patient himself There was coordination between doctors and through that they improved their research and assigned tasks to each of the doctors, surgeons, and nurses and cooperated systematically to achieve the goal - which is to cure the patients Notice that - people behave well when there is one common issue and its reasons are understood clearly and what they want to achieve even if it is complicated Dr. Karl-Henrik wanted to apply that to sustainability Hence, he sat in front of his computer in August 1988, that was one year after – Our common future it had given definition for sustainability but without specifying roles or what governments, persons, society, or companies, etc. were expected to do. In addition to that, there wasn’t any practical or scientific definition of sustainability that could be relied on to achieve concrete goals. Step 1: He wrote paper expressing his thoughts on the topic of sustainability He sent it to 50 Swedish scientists doctors, chemists, geologists, physicists, mathematicians, toxicologists and all the experts that he knew in Sweden Sweden is known as one of the first societies that were known to be sustainable and asked them to correct his mistakes The 50 people responded to him through comments where each person in his field showed some errors and provided corrections Then, Dr. Karl corrected the document again after adding the comments of the 50 scientists and he this process 21 times and in copy number 21, everyone was in accord, reaching consensus From here, he began to formulate what is called the “Natural Step” or the so-called Strategic Sustainable Development Framework. The Consensus Statement detailed the scientific situation the inducing state of our natural world and how human activity contributes to the failure of natural systems But it also contained compelling argument as to why "being part of the solution and not the problem" would be self-beneficial. This was the first consensus-based sustainability effort. Step 2: He wanted what had been drafted, to be within the hand reach for every Swedish person Then, he went to group of Swedish artists and said to them group of scientists and have developed document and we have agreed upon it and we want to celebrate this because we will send it to every Swedish Would you like to participate with us? They said yes Then, he went to the Head of Swedish TV and said to him, group of scientists and agreed on one document, and the artists will participate with us. Would you give us transmission that will enable us to send the consensus document to all the Swedes? He said yes. Then, he went to the Ministry of Education and told them me and Swedish TV, and group of artists have agreed on small project. Do you want to get this information for free, and we will send it to every school in Sweden for free? So, they told him, did all these people all agree on the same thing? Usually, that is difficult, but we accept it. He then went to the King of Sweden and told him; the government, the TV, and group of artists, have all agreed on one project, and we want you to be sponsor of this in Sweden? Of course, he said yes. Then, he went to advertisers, and those were several companies that were known for their excellent reputation He told them that he, the king, the government, scientists, artists, and the Swedish TV are managing small project Then, he explained that they want to send small box to every family in Sweden Inside it will be tape explaining this project along with an illustrated book After that, all of Sweden knew practically and scientifically what sustainability means and what is expected of each person, company, or government to do. Suddenly this spread all over the world. The question here is, what did Dr. Karl-Henrik do? He was the first to establish along with group of scientists what is known as the "Strategic Sustainable Development" framework also known as the "Natural Step Framework." What is the Natural Step? Simply put, Dr. Karl-Henrik sought to answer series of simple questions: How can sustainability be defined practically? And how to design set of simple, logical guidelines for how to deal with society in such way that is compatible with the definition or, in other words, develop set of simple guidelines to judge whether human activities are "sustainable" or not Dr. Karl-Henrik succeeded in developing the Natural Step to guide people and create global environmental movement And form an alliance of universities, companies, industrial groups, municipalities and more extensive government entities to devise new ways that enable humans to develop systematically into socially and environmentally sustainable world and to create and implement concrete sustainability strategies. In the next episode, we will know what is the “natural step” or framework of the sustainable development strategy and the basic guidelines for defining “sustainability” based on the first principles of science agreed upon by the Swedish Scientific community. In the end, say Sustainability essentially means preserving life on Earth, including humanity If you have any question, ask in the comments, please share with friends as that will benefit everyone If you want to endure, you need to have authentic foundations….
