hello reader and thank you for coming for another vocabulary lesson today this week we are in savath my literacy unit four Lesson Four for fourth grade our story of the week is the secret of the winter count for each of our words this week we're going to do the word from the text the definition from the text sentence explaining it we're going to pull the sentence from the text to see what it looks like I'm going to pick picture that illustrates it synonyms that mean the same antonyms that mean opposite think about it question and finally we're going to have some other kind of morphological and various uses included with all that said let's get started our first word is drought drought is noun meaning long time of low or no rainfall so drought is long period of time with little or no rain causing the land to become very dry in text it said her father said that 1886 would be the worst drought in Montana's history and now their well was already dry and here we see picture of what drought might look like it's completely dry and bar and even the trees and plants are dying because there's not enough water some synonyms words that mean the same might be dry spell water shortage or arid some antonyms might be rainy season flood or downpour what do you think and of course you can pause it at the what do you think questions to think about it or to talk about it with your partner or group how does drought affect the environment and what problems can it cause for people and animals morphologically the word drought comes from an Old English word meaning dryness which is related to dry and refers to long period with little or no rain drought means time when there is very little rain or no rain for long period making the land dry as noun we would use it in sentence the grass turned brown during the drought because there wasn't enough rain to keep it healthy our next word is intricate intricate is an adjective complicated and very detailed something intricate is very detailed and has many small connected parts from the text it says star Walker showed Emma and the children an animal hide covered with drawings in an intricate spiral pattern and found this picture with this intricate spiral pattern and you can imagine the artist had to spend lot of time getting all those little details just right some synonyms might be complex detailed complicated some anonyms mean words that mean the opposite might be simple plain or basic there's nothing simple or plain about that what do you think why might an intricate design be more difficult to create than simple one of course you may pause the video to talk about it with your partner or group the adjective intricate comes from Latin word meaning entangled or complicated it describes something that has many small parts making it complex or difficult to understand some variations might be of course intricate as an adjective the spider spun an intricate web with many tiny detailed patterns as an adverb we can add ly and say the artist in intricately painted tiny flowers on the vase in noun we can change the ending and put intricacy and the intricacy of the puzzle made it challenging to solve all those are connected our next word is wavering wavering can be an adjective or verb it means changing to be wavering means to be unsure or unsteady moving back and forth indecision or movement in the text it said the wavering light from the coal oil lamp made the numbers on her slate tablet jump and wiggle and of course wavering there is used as an adjective describing light and put lantern if you've ever been around campfire or lantern the light kind of flickers and it kind of moves and so it's kind of wavering it's very unsteady some synonyms might be hesitant uncertain or unsteady some some antonyms might be decisive certain or steady what do you think how can wavering decision affect group of people trying to make plan together so wavering there I'm sticking with the word changing not the flickering light so think about that when you discuss it with your partner in group the word wavering comes from the word waver meaning to move back and forth or be uncertain the suffix ing forms both the present tense verb and an adjective describing something that is unsteady or uncertain as verb we might say she began to waver between choosing chocolate or vanilla ice cream as past tense verb we might say his voice wavered as he spoke in front of the large audience it was going back and forth waveringly becomes an adverb describing verb she answered the question waveringly unsure of her response so waveringly describes answered as an adjective his wavering voice showed that he was nervous to speak in front of the class and as verb Liam was wavering between playing soccer or joining the swim team because he liked both Sports all connected words our next word is unbidden unbidden is an adjective meaning not asked for something unbidden happens without being asked for or invited from the text Emma wiped unbidden tears from her face and that unbidden she didn't want to cry but she didn't ask to cry but she was crying anyway that has kind of sad connotation but unbidden can also be positive maybe you surprise someone with gift that was not expected or asked for and that could be happy moment some synonyms might be Uninvited spontaneous or unprompted some antonyms might be invited requested or expected so what do you think can something unbidden be good thing why or why not the adjective unbidden comes from the prefix un meaning not in the past tense of the verb bidden meaning to ask or command together unbidden means not asked for or not invited as an adjective it means happening without being asked or invited and sentence might be an unbidden tear rolled down her cheek as she heard the sad news and our last word is snoozing snoozing is verb mean dozing or sleeping lightly snoo snoozing means sleeping usually in light or casual way here have somebody taking nap they were they were snoozing they were in this text it says they were actually snoozing when the Clank of tools announced that the men had returned probably woke him up some synonyms for sne for snoozing might be napping resting or sleeping some anonyms might be waking awake or active what do you think why might it feel good to be snoozing during the day hopefully not during this video the verb snooze means to sleep lightly and the suffix ing forms the present participle or the present tense verb showing that the action is happening right now just as plain verb take off ing he likes to snooze on the couch in the afternoon with the ing you might say the cat was snoozing in the sun on the window sill as noun because it can be noun she might say she took took quick snooze during the break and of course my question is can you fill in the blanks and explain it you can pause the video here teachers who are using this with your class will have all these sentences in the video description and until next time happy reading
