Tajweed is Only 50 of Quran Learning Heres the Rest Lesson 1 Arabic 101

النص الكامل للفيديو

When most people think about learning to recite the Quran, they immediately think of the types of med, noon sakinah, meem sakinah, qalaqalah, makharij, and other tajwid rules. And waqf and ibtidaa as just one of the topics that is good to know thing or two about because it is not as important. But if this is how we think about learning the Quran, you would actually be mistaken because you'll probably be still reciting the Quran incorrectly without even knowing it. You see, according to major scholars, the study of waqf and ibtidaa, learning stopping and resuming, doesn't just make up tiny fraction of the journey. It represents essentially half of it. And some even consider it completely separate branch of knowledge. Now you might be thinking, "Half? Isn't that an exaggeration considering you have to learn makharij, sifat, med, noon sakinah, meem sakinah, qalaqalah, and dozen other skills for tajwid? How could simply knowing when to stop and start equal all that?" Well, while these rules tell you exactly how to perform and pronounce each word properly, they don't tell you how to recite correctly without corrupting the meaning of your station. Let's think about it in English first. Perfecting your English pronunciation for this sentence, for example, will not help you communicate it properly if you don't respect the punctuation and pausing rules. If said, "The notice, the pause, the teacher said the student is lazy." Here, the student described the teacher as lazy. But notice what happens when don't respect the pausing rules. The teacher said, "The student is lazy." Here, the teacher is describing the student as lazy. Just simple pause changed the meaning of the sentence completely. This mistake cannot be avoided, no matter how perfectly you pronounced each one of these words. That's why learning how to pause and resume properly isn't just good to have, but it is must-have. Without it, communicating the correct message becomes almost impossible. Now, if this was for English, how do you think it would be for the Quran, where every word carries such deep meanings? Well, let's have look at this ayah. If you read this ayah and pause correctly, it will give the proper meaning. And if they submit in Islam, they are rightly guided. But if they turn away, then upon you is only the duty of notification. But if for whatever reason you paused here and said, the meaning will be "And if they submit in Islam, they are rightly guided, even if they turn away. Then upon you is only the duty of notification." So, the meaning has been completely changed, which is not the proper meaning of the ayah at all. And this very famous ayah, if you pause correctly right here, it will simply mean "Our Lord, and lay not upon us burden like that which you laid upon those before us." But if you paused here, it would completely change the meaning and even corrupt it, and Our Lord, and lay not upon us burden like that which you carried. And this is, of course, very unsound meaning. So, the point is, when scholars said half, they didn't really mean half the time or half the number of rules. They meant half the responsibility of conveying the Quran correctly. Therefore, not having any knowledge about waqf and ibtida' can be as detrimental as not knowing basic tajwid rules at all. Like, instead of saying siratal ladhina an'amta, you made the major mistake and said an'amtu, completely changing the meaning. So, it is as important, and it might even require little bit more attention because mistakes in waqf and ibtida' can be much more subtle. So, now the question is, what should an average learner do in order to properly avoid this type of mistakes? Well, there are three things that you can do that will, insha Allah, help you. Number one, reciting the Quran while checking tafsir or the translation of the meaning. The translation of the meaning of the ayat can, in many cases, help you orient yourself in the ayat to avoid messing up the meaning when reciting it. Number two, straight out imitating the recitation of shaykh, copying exactly how he stops and resumes. And number three, an explicit study of waqf and ibtida'. While the first solution is the quickest and easiest to recommend, it is not the most fluid experience if you have to stop and check translation constantly. It is, however, ideal for pondering the meaning and great for beginners. The second solution is excellent if you're able to keep up with the pauses this particular reciter makes. The downside here could be that it limits your options to only what you're used to hearing. While that is not bad thing in itself, waqf and ibtida' can be such an amazing way to read and understand the ayah in way that you've never experienced before. It can help you connect with the Quran in completely different way. This ayah here is an example. Depending on where exactly you pause, this rather short ayah can yield four incredible shades of meaning. If you pause on the best name, it will give the meaning, "And He is Allah in the heavens and in the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn." But if you pause on as-samawat, it would give the meaning, "And He is Allah in the heavens. And in the earth, He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn." And if you pause on al-ard, which is the most famous, it would give the meaning, "And He is Allah in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn." And you can also pause on jahrakum, and it would give the meaning, "And He is Allah in the heavens and the earth who knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn." So, while all these pauses are correct, they cannot be done randomly without knowing what you're doing. That's why the best solution here is the actual explicit study of waqf and ibtida'. And this is exactly what we will, in sha Allah, be doing in this new series. While following these lessons, they will, in sha Allah, help you understand the basic types of waqf and ibtida.
