following the statement in the Apostles Creed about the church comes this curious phrase about the communion of saints the communion of saints speaks about the long-standing historical continuity have with Christians starting back with the early disciples with Peter and John and Andrew onward to Paul onward to Ignatius onward adjusted martyr to Tertullian to Origen to agustin to Chrysostom the francis - Luther - Wesley to Whitfield - Bart to Billy Graham to my wife all part of the same Communion we're all one with them and that's something that gives us enormous strength and comfort who are the Saints it's word that in popular usage has been hijacked somewhat and so we tend to think of the Saints as special group of people an elite when the New Testament writers used the word which we translates as Saints they referred to all God's people all God's people are called to be holy in Greek Hagee oi which translates out as Saints so the Saints from the beginning were not some special Christians who are cut above the rest of us but actually all God's people he means to the whole church to all the believers so that whether we like it or not of whether we're very bad sent we're still since and Paul says that even to the church in Corinth who were very far from being morally perfect they were muddled and fractures and sinful and goodness days what saint is word for Christian and therefore to believe in the communion of saints is to say that Christians are called out of the world to join the church as body of Christ the very mix nature of the church and and very mixed nature of our own lives our aspirations and desires for God on the one hand and the pull and failures and temptation of sin to which we to easily give in on the other means that we live in this in-between time we are saved and yet there's still salvation to be worked out in our lives we we're sinners who are forgiven by grace but we are still sinners
