good morning friends today we are going to look at an important work of honest hammingway and that is the novela The Old Man and the Sea nebula simply means long short story or you can say short novel alright so let's dive into the summary of The Old Man and the Sea in this story we have three main characters beginning with Santiago who is an old fisherman actually luck is not in his favor and he has been unable to catch fish for 84 days but he is craziest old man and as he is fishing for many years now he is hopeful that he will catch fish soon the second character in our story is menolin who is boy in his teenage he knows the old man Santiago since he was 5 years old old man and manolin together went fishing many times all these years you can say that Santiago is sort of mentor to manolin actually what happens is that the father of this menolin does not want his son to continue with the Santiago just because it's been many weeks since the old man didn't catch any fish but as menolin is with Santiago for many years now and they are doing fishing together manolin does not care what his father says he has deep connection with the old man and despite being unable to catch fish manolin looks at the old man as his mentor menolin also makes sure that Santiago has food and blankets and can rest without being bothered the common topic they discuss is baseball in fact Santiago's favorite player is the Maggio sort of role model for Santiago so often the discussion between both of them is generally about this baseball player the Maggio moving forward we have the third character which is actually not character but an 18 feet big fish the name of the fish in the story is Merlin and towards the end of the story we see the great fight between Santiago and Merlin which went for three days all right so let's get quickly on to the story so the Story begins like this Santiago being disappointed he is not able to catch any fish for 84 days and now he decides that once again he will venture far out into the Gulf Stream Cuba to fish and tries to break this unlucky streak next day in the afternoon he hooks big fish as we have talked earlier the big fish name is Merlin he hooks this big fish after struggling for three long days but after fishing Merlin what happens is that other big sharks come to eat this Merlin he fights with other fishes but at the end all the sharks end up eating Martin so now Santiago is again disappointed after 84 days he catches fish but now again he is unable to bring back anything home he is just left with the skeleton of Merlin and as he reaches back to the shore back to the home other fishermen look at the skeleton of the Merlin and get amazed that how courageous Santiago is to capture that long fish so Santiago is disappointed and he returns back to his room where he finds menolin manolin and Santiago promises each other to fish together once again the next day and then Santiago goes to his sleep and the story ends here that Santiago and menolin makes that they both will go once again for fishing next day shows the determination and never give up attitude of human beings and that is Hemingway shared in this story so this is brief summary of our Novella The Old Man and the Sea subscribe to this channel for more such updates on ugc net English literature that's it for this video thank you
