hi my name is Anne glass I'm reading and learning specialist at private school in New York City and work with kindergarteners through third graders on reading word study and writing skills in addition to being reading specialist and learning specialist I'm also parent and today I'm going to talk to you about topics in reading reading is really complex task involving lot of linguistic and cognitive skills orchestrated simultaneously there is very simple way to look at reading which helps us break down what some of those skills are in what we call the simple view of reading reading is the product of decoding on word level and comprehension Under the Umbrella of decoding are all of the ideas that we've talked about so far it includes knowledge of letter names it includes phonic awareness it includes phonics which describes the paired associations between letters and letter names and what's inherent in all of those skills working together to to be efficient is the fact that they need to be automatic they need to be just completely second nature and the only way to get to that level of automaticity on the word level is through repeated practice then once decoding is mastered you can address comprehension the comprehension piece cannot be neglected while phonic skills are being taught and comprehension can be addressed through read alouds at home and in the classroom in which students are asked to retell to tell what characters are in story to make connections to their lives and other books that they've read and to make predictions about what might happen in the text again inherent in becoming skilled reader is the very critical concept of fluency and fluency again is something that needs to be addressed at the word level even beginning with automatic rapid letter naming in preschool so reading is is very complex set of cognitive linguistic tasks that are orchestrated simultaneously to generate and achieve the goal of reading which is understanding text and constructing meaning from text
