hello and welcome to today's social studies lesson so first of all guys can we all turn to wave and say big hello to our friends on camera hello and we'll begin by doing our meditation sequence so will sit down take two fingers find our heart center left hand on our lap and close our eyes so so so so and when you're ready guys you can open your eyes and come back to the room and next we'll do our stretch sequence so let's stand up and push in our chairs and we'll begin by rotating left right left right left right left right left right left right excellent guys now for some stretches let's do five stretches to our left one two three four five and now we'll do five stretches to our right one two three four five excellent guys now let's have shake shake it up it have little dance if you like have dance have shake have chance very good okay and to finish we will do five star jumps one two three four five excellent guys have seat okay so today we're going to learn about the new type of words we use with geography something you see all the time maps how do we spell maps guys maps now can anybody tell me what map is what do we use maps for we can use maps to tell us where we want to go where places are and where we need to be so for example teachers what you will need to do now is print off the flash cards for this lesson and we have variety of maps and let's see if our students can guess the places so guys have you ever seen this map before do you know what the blue things are blue is water or sea what is the green green is the land can anybody guess what place this is map of australia yes can you read the word on top australia so how do we spell australia guys excellence and now let's take look at another map this one is different anybody guess where this is any guesses we have australia does anybody know this place this large area here this large area of land china this is china it says prc prc stands for people's republic of china but we will write china so so far we have australia china let's see who can guess this place very good you recognize your home country this is map of thailand you can see thailand is here the very long stretch of land either side the water we have seas okay guys so now thailand hey do the maps look the same no every map is different because each place is different they have different geographical locations and features okay how about this one can you see this one looks like australia again yes it's not australia but it looks similar to australia begins with france let's straighten this map on the board we have france the green area is france can you see this area here united kingdom that's where am from my country united kingdom or england is very close to france you see this blue part here do you know what that is to see do you know some people can swim from england to france some people who can swim very far they can leave england or france and swim across it's the place called the english channel about 40 miles and some people can swim it okay next place very big place similar to china and what does usa stand for guys can we remember perfect united states states okay so so far australia australia china china thailand france france united states of america and one more map okay our final map let's see who can guess think you've all seen this map before it might even be in this room already where is this place can you see it in this room this is everywhere this is map of the world this is everywhere every map here is on this one can you see australia you notice australia here look here australia you see this map here of australia here it is here china you see china china is here okay thailand where do we think thailand is can you see here this is thailand on the world map france here very small because it's the world map and then the very big country united states of usa is here okay so this map is off ready guys the world australia australia china china thailand france united states of america and the final map every place on the planet is the world okay all these maps all the same no they're all different different places have different maps that's why we have maps if everywhere was the same we wouldn't need maps but there are some features on each map can anybody think of any can you see here this box on thailand's map this is something we call symbols yes see this one on the front map scale and you already know some of the features like what does blue represent water what does green represent land and we have other things like we can have roads rivers bridges cities and airports so what we're going to do now is we're going to take look at video and powerpoint presentation to learn more about the various features on map okay so let's take look at our powerpoint presentation about maps so there's some of the maps we've seen earlier on our board exercise we had united states of america thailand china of maps physical map this one is of thailand usa usa china physical maps show the places on each of the maps show places on each of the maps specific map thailand usa specific map show only one feature for example fuels of map we have name usually the place like the map of thailand is named after thailand so we have name you see this map is of united states scale scale is down here at the bottom does anybody know what scale does scale measures distance how far something is like now we're in chiang rai if we wanted to go to chiang mai we'd want to look on our map and the scale will tell us how far symbols you can see here all of the different symbols what might we have symbols for on the map roads rivers bridges airports cities stadiums map symbols so you see on map road looks like this line you see this symbol here if you look at map and you see this symbol now you know bridge river what color is river or blue on map you can see the blue line the blue line isn't road blue line is river okay red line rose blue line on map you will see circle with dot in the middle this tells us it's city or town yes like if you look at map of thailand and you look for chiang rai you will see near chiang rai you will see this symbol because chiang rai is city and this one railway yes not road not river but somewhere trains go trains go on railway any questions guys okay let's practice the final five words again for our map symbols ready rose rose bridge excellent guys welcome welcome back to class we hope your students enjoyed the video and the powerpoint presentation about the various features and symbols on map and now it's time for our stretch sequence so let's stand up guys and push in our chairs and for this sequence we will begin by placing our hands on our head shoulders knees and toes knees and toes head shoulders knees and toes knees and toes eyes and ear and mouth and nose head shoulders knees and toes knees and toes now let's do it one more time but this time we'll start slowly and then we'll go quick ready shoulders knees and toes knees and toes head shoulders knees and toes knees and toes eyes and ears and mouth and nose head chilling into littles and to finish we will do ten claps excellent guys have seat so now it's time for us to do classroom exercise where we will draw our own map okay so first of all our map needs name will do will try to do map of thailand so we will say ma how do we spell okay so i'll begin this might not be 100 accurate but i'll try to draw one so we will start up here and then we will work our way down because thailand is very long country and then it goes in and comes out what do we think as do you recognize that place does this look like silence really yeah are you sure okay so can we say map of thailand okay so now we have our name we have our map what do we need next we need some symbols who can think of any symbols that we might want to put in our roles okay can anybody remember from the powerpoint presentation what color is the roads red okay so let me see we have red so we don't need to write road on the map because if we have no we don't need we know the red line is the road so we can just have lots of roads going all around thailand then what we will do we will have our key so we know red line equals excellent thailand has many more worlds than this but that's an example who can think of other symbols we would have river would the river be red no the river will be blue okay so let's think we might have some rivers running through the middle of thailand like this going across all different places you know the red lines are roads and we know the blue lands is river how do we spell river excellent you see on our map we don't need to write everything is road or everything is river because we know from our key when we have river if we want to cross the river what will we use if we want to go over some water we would sail in boat but if we want to cross over begins with does anybody remember what this symbol is bridge yes bridge is what we use on map if we want to cross over the river so you will always see these symbols where there is water okay so there's few there so we'll draw them on our key and how do we spell bridge guys bridge okay next what city are we in now chiang rai is chiang rai in the south of thailand is it in the east the west you're right it's in the north okay so let's write chiang rai but we don't need to write the name because we can write the symbol you see what does this symbol represent city city or town chiang rai is here so we will write chiang rai who can think of other cities in thailand chiang rai chiang mai okay chiang mai is around here yes we'll say that one's chiang mai so we'll write chiang mai how about the big city the capital of thailand bangkok bangkok is around here yeah so we'll draw another city map and we will write bangkok okay okay so so far we have city or town roads river bridge what about if we want to go somewhere on train if we're on train will we use the river no will we use road what will we use we will use railway so if you see on map something that looks like this you know it's not road it's not river it's railway and that's where you can go on train so we'll draw it on our map here and how do we spell railway guys so so far railway bridge bridge river roads city city town name map of thailand one more thing if we want to know how far away something is scale excellent scale won't go on the map scale will be at the side this would be scale and what it will do it will say see here is zero kilometers and then here is 50 kilometers so you know the distance of the scale is 50 kilometers so you can then look at the scale and see how far how far is chiang rai from bangkok you can do it by taking the scale and using the distance we use the scale to measure how far away things are how do we spell scale guys excellent any other features we need on our map think we've got everything haven't we so let's practice one more time map of thailand or my map that looks little like thailand we have railway you can see here bridge to take us over water river the blue lands roads the red lines city city or town are the circles with the dot inside and to find out how far away something is we use our scale so you see this is how we do our map excellent guys well done and now teachers it's time for our worksheet activity so what you can do is print off worksheet for each of the students in your class and as you can see the worksheet contains map of thailand so what our students need to do they need to complete it using the various signs and symbols that we've just done on the board so they can use this for reference but they can put them anywhere in the maps they want they can use rivers roads and cities to create their own map of thailand but what's the first thing we must do guys write your names on top and give our students around 15 minutes for this activity because it gives them good chance to do their maps so once more the vocabulary city town red line okay guys red for roads river blue line bridge and railway and reminds our students to also give their map scale which you can see given here in the box so nadia pat there's your map there you can begin down you're welcome next you're welcome you're welcome and you can see your map of thailand you're welcome thank you you're welcome thank you you're welcome you're welcome so you have your map drawn already decide where you want your symbols to go for example if you all want to do chiang rai where we are now chiang rai in the north of thailand and you know the key for your city is this then you can think about rivers and roads you can create your own map but just remember to use the correct symbols and the first thing to do is give your map name so on it you will have map of thailand okay symbols this is where you will write all of your symbols that you use this here is the symbols box this is where after you're when you're drawing your map you can use to draw your symbols like i've done here you've got your scale name of map map of thailand yes and then this one here will go in your symbols city town so for city and town remember we have that one and then you can draw city town excellent plough that's it so if you're looking for chiang rai think chiang rai would be around here so you can put in here excellent pat very good and remember blue for rivers red for roads okay so now you can draw your symbols chiang rai is here so of course chiang rai is city and you can create your own if you want to do phuket if you want bangkok if you want chiang mai you can draw them on your map and what i've done guys you can see the map of the places on thailand on the powerpoint welcome back to class we hope your students enjoyed the worksheet activity where they had to create their own maps of thailand and demonstrate by writing the various symbols on their map so one final time guys let's practice the vocabulary we had our map of thailand and on our map we had our scale and then various features in our symbols city city or town town road is our red line river is our blue line bridge and railway so excellent guys everybody does great job well done and that's the end of today's lesson so we hope you've enjoyed it found it interesting and learned something too and we'll see you again soon for the next lesson can we all turn to wave and say goodbye guys bye bye see you again soon
