The longest dream of an individual runs between 12 and 14 seconds. We sometimes interpret by the opposite of what the individual sees. That dream could be interpreted that this person is very obedient to his mother. As we see Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam in dream, he said, "Whoever sees me in dream, then indeed he has seen me." So the second condition is resemble Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. But when you see him, you would see him like Abu Bakr Siddiq saw him in real life. Inshallah, if you Yeah, and said was like, hey, may Allah ask Allah to put it in your scale of good deeds. But today, I've got really, really interesting subject that lot of people are interested in, and myself I'm really excited about this podcast, which is about tabir al-ru'ya, dream interpretation in Islam. So first thing, Sheikh, can you define for us what is dream? What Islamically, what do we consider dream? Bismillah, alhamdulillah, salat wasalam, Sheikh, that's an honor to be back. Ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala from all of us and want to send our extend our gratitude and for everyone who has watched first episodes of Jin and Rukia and and their feedback is very important and their questions are considered Hopefully we could look into it soon. dreams the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was dream maker. That is very important to start with. Cuz what is we say in our deen always we are moderate. We always say that ummah can wasat. When we have both extreme, those who deny those who accept, we're always moderate ummah. So understanding what dream is, everybody dream. Everyone. This is something that no one could deny. Everyone sees dreams and when they sleep at period of their time, whether it's every day, every night, every other night, every month, but as everybody witness there is dream. We have the unconsciousness. The unconsciousness part reflects upon the consciousness of human being. So dream is vision that person sees for whatever reason that we will discuss inshallah later from Hadith. for whatever reason that he sees, that vision is through his sleep period that his soul travels and therefore he witness things that he's not able to witness in real life or he sees it in real life that reflects in his dream. And there is there is types. Dreams in psychology that runs the longest dream of an individual runs between 12 and 16 seconds. That's it. That's it. So everything that you see, all this cycle of dream that you go through, that you travel into different country, and this in our deen proves very important concept. Al-Akhil. Allahu Akbar. Because we consider the time of Al-Akhira, we sometimes How would this happen? Well, you know that the traveling and the Well, you're able to travel the time of Al-Akhira in your grave. The time that Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala will be as 1,000 1,000 in one day. How is that? Well, you see dream that you travel all the way to Pakistan, to Egypt, and you come back and you see your family, and you travel Even if the dream were to take all night, you wouldn't be able to do that all night. Yes, so your your vision in your dream. Your soul sees things, witnesses things that reflects upon your unconsciousness. Subhanallah. That's very beautiful point about dreams being good example about the Al-Akhira because sometimes we get this question, okay, somebody's in Qabr, in the grave, yes, and they're being punished or they're getting reward, but we don't hear it, we don't see it, we just see them laying. Yes. But then again, like one of the Sheikhs that we study with give this example, he said somebody could be laying in the bed next to you, and they could be having horrible time being punished in dream, or they could be enjoying in garden of Jannah in dream, and you just see them sleeping, you don't realize what they're going through. So, like that, somebody who's dead could be going through those things in the grave, and we don't see it, but they're feeling. Sure, this is why and person in person in the room, the AC is on, it's very cold, but they are they've they dream of fire, mhm, and they feel it's burning, but the AC the room is cold. So, how is that? That's exactly proof for the punishment of the soul, the punishment of the soul. So, dreams are great witness for that, for the Also, sleep is also called sister of death, right? Yes, that's minor death. Minor death as well. And in many Ahadith we look at even the dua for waking up that this is yani Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala give us life after death. So, true. Subhanallah. So, Sheikh, so we understand that dreams Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala said What did he say about waking up in the night? The tofa is minor death. At night when you sleep, so your soul travels for that. Some souls return. Some some don't as Allah subhana wa ta'ala So now what are the types of dreams in Islam? Meaning that we get that this is and part of it is your brain kind of just processing things, right? So there is which would be one type, which is just thoughts. Confused thoughts at times. You just whatever happened that day you kind of go through it in your brain or something that you may be afraid of or something that you may be excited about. And that's just your your your human mind kind of processing information. So that's one type. But Islamically, what are the other types? We have the Hadith narrated by Imam Muslim Allah that the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wasallam, he said ru'ya ala thalath. Ru Dreams are upon three. And want to differentiate between two things. Ru'ya Okay, not ru'ya. Some people pronounce it like that. So ru'ya, which is how we pronounce it now correctly, ru'ya. That is vision or dream. Then we have al-hulm with sukun on the lam. Al-hulm because that's puberty age. Yeah, they all say for al-hulm. Okay, which is nightmare or an evil dream or bad dream. And then we have hadith al-nafs. Hadith al-nafs is that your subconsciousness. And we'll talk about that. So Rasulullah sallam, he said ru'ya ala thalath. Then we could divide it up on three. One, malakun min Allah. So there's an angel whom Allah subhana wa ta'ala reveals certain things for him to reveal it to that individual. Lawazim al-ghaib, so that's from the unseen. Okay? So every dream muwakkalun biha malak. Every good dream, there's an angel who brings it to you for glad tidings. Two, min al-shaytan. dream that is nightmare or evil dream, we call it evil dream or harm min ash-shaytan. That to bring in sadness to the heart of the believer. So, how Or to bring in sadness to the individual. That's the nightmare. Number three, hadith al-nafs. Most of the dreams are inner thoughts. Whatever you think of, whatever your mind is occupied throughout the day, whatever you you you think of during the day, stress that you have, you take it out in your dream, okay? simple example, you you sleep thirsty, you'll dre- you'll dream of water water, okay? You you you you you're hungry, you'll dream of food. You're stressed out, you might see yourself getting beaten. person might see themselves beating someone up because they can't do it real life, so they do it in dream. It's like you're occupied, your mind is is occupied. So, these are the three categories that we're talking about. So, then mentioned. So, for the dreams that are confused thoughts, that's we could put all that aside. But, when we see dream, how would we differentiate between what you're talking about, nightmare or something from shaytan, and ru'ya which is vision that Allah subhana wa ta'ala gives us? So, do we seek interpretation? Should we? And who should we seek interpretation from? We Rasulullah it's all the hadith. So, Rasulullah responded all that. Subhanallah. He said sallallahu alayhi wa sallam idhar ahadukum mayn'ajub. If someone sees that what what he likes. Now, this is the thing. How do we differentiate? We might put some simple rulings, there's so many, of course, have book called the 40 Fundamentals of Dreams. Then inshallah you know, teach you all the time alhamdulillah people inshallah benefit from it. the the interpretation here, should should we seek it? We first have to understand is it good dream or not? Not everything good that you see is good. Not everything evil that you see is evil. Subhanallah. Okay? But we could put some points. One, good dream or dream from Allah is usually precise, short, to the point. It's not lot of confusion. It's direct message. It was really long. You went somewhere and you did this and you did that. You met someone then you came back and then you got injured. This this is more confusion, more of nightmare with inner thoughts, confusion of thoughts. So, precision. Two, it carries glad tidings. It brings in that that that feeling of happiness to the heart. You wake up from that dream feeling good about it. Okay? That's that's another way. Three, the the signs are clear. The sign the the signs are clear. So, it's it's simple and it's easy and we could Abdullah Abdullah ibn Umar when he saw dream, Rasul Allah he said this is good dream for you if he prays at night. He continued on praying at night. This is another point that was just mentioning that it could be an encouragement for you to do good. Also, good dream. nightmare is obvious, something that brings sadness to the heart, something that you do not like. But it's not always that case. That's what you don't understand. You might see something that it looks bad or it gives you bad feeling or impression about it, but it is actually true. Sheikh Nafi had dream from Allah. Someone actually saw dream for him. sister saw him making tawaf around Kaaba. She called him and she said, saw person that know. saw him making tawaf around Kaaba naked." And that didn't feel good. Like seeing something like that it's inappropriate. So, the sister was like, "Masha Allah." She said, "What do you mean Masha Allah? You hear me out come? But he's she he said when was this? She said very recent. He said do you know if he did Hajj? And she said yeah know he was at Hajj. So call him if you can and tell him inshallah Allah has accepted his Hajj. Allahu Akbar. Why? How what did he interpret? He interpreted the Hadith of the Prophet Sallallahu whoever makes Hajj returns back like the day he is born. And the day you are born you are born what? Naked. Naked. So your sins are free. She said it was you Sheikh he's far crying he hanged up and it's well known call. For that to that sister the dream didn't feel good. But there's an interpretation behind it. But if the dream is obvious that it's evil you don't need to worry about it. Like if you see someone killing you if you see someone running after you if you see mostly from the Shaitan. Yeah if you see what what dreams if you see might be you wake up you don't want to remember it. You don't want to you don't feel good then you know that this is from the Shaitan. So we could differentiate that way. That's lot of beautiful points you're raising here. Want to unpack them so one sometimes you may see something in dream and you see it to be good but it isn't. Yes and you may see it to be evil but it isn't. And there's beautiful example in the same line as you said when Ibn Sirin was asked about dream of somebody seeing Hasan al-Basri playing music naked on table. So people were sitting lower and he was high up above them and he was naked playing music. And you know people thought it to be very negative dream music hobby naked Allah be good old trying to elevate yourself above others. And Ibn Sirin said no Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala honored him that this dream that you saw about him is glad tiding for him. One that Allah honored him above others. And naked means that his inside like his outside. He has nothing to hide in in what he is inside is the way you see him not like some people who outside is one way and inside is different. And he said the music is that his words will have effect on people. So, sometimes dream like he says, you may see it as negative, but in reality is something good. In this way Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam he said in Hadith If he sees dream or something that he likes then you should only tell your dream to scholar because they would understand and interpret your And this this leads us to another point is very important. Is dream or are dreams part of the deen? Is it knowledge? Is it aim that we should seek fatwa for? person asked him Qala What do you say about dreams? Okay? Should should people interpret dream? You're playing with This is fatwa. So, that's very important knowledge that people don't share your dreams with everybody. Except scholar. Why? Because they're going to give you fatwa. Very clear. We teach you from the science of ta'wil, interpretation of dreams. He taught Yusuf Alaihi Wasallam. He taught the prophets Ibrahim Alaihi Wasallam during interpretation of dream. Or someone who'll give you an advice. Somebody You know, even if they receive they want good or even if they see something that they they they don't they see something bad in dream or they see you know, something that will happen. They always shift it to good good hope, good impression, you know, giving you glad tiding, trying to help you up. Imagine you go to someone that you don't they don't like you and you tell them dream, they interpret opposite just that it won't happen out of envy. We have people who are like that. We have people who interpret people's dreams to to not make it happen. And said at the beginning of the talk that Rasul Allah was dream maker. How was he dream maker? He used to sit after Fajr. Now, our cover Rasul Allah the leader of the ummah with all his worries Allah Azza wa Sallam, wars going on, he has problems here and there, he has family, he and all of this he sits after Fajr, narrated by Muslim, he sits there, "Man ra'a minkum al-yawm ru'ya?" "Anyone have seen dream tonight? Present it to me." And then he interpreted the dream. He told Abu Bakr Siddiq, he said, "What do you think about this dream?" And Abu Bakr Siddiq interpreted, "Qala, asabta shay'an wa akhta'ta shay'an." You did good at part and you missed part. He had time to do that? Yes, because he was dream maker. He wanted to happen. Our point of dream is to make it happen. Why? "Allahu Azza wa Jalla lahumul bushra fil hayati dunya wa fil akhira." Qala Abu Darda, hadith narrated by Imam Muslim, Abu Darda asked Rasul Allah Azza wa Sallam, "What is the glad tiding here and the eye?" "Qala, wallahi, ma sa'alani 'anha ahadun qabla." No one has asked me about this verse before you. And was expecting that you would ask for it. You are the first person to ask for the tafsir of this eye. They have the glad tiding in this dunya. So, glad tiding of akhira was jannah, the pleasure of Allah. But what about dunya? He said, "Ar-ru'ya saliha." good dream. Now, we call it vision. From the angel, Allah revealed to the angel, the angel comes and reveals it in dream. He said, "Ar-ru'ya saliha lil mu'min." For the believer. "Yaraha aw turaha that he sees it or it's seen for him." So, this is glad time. So, Rasul Allah Azza wa Sallam will tell them, "Tell me your dream." Why would they tell him the dream? So, he could interpret, so it would happen. So, he was dream maker Allah Azza wa Sallam. "Allahu Rasul Allah, ra'aytu mannan fi bayti Awf ibn Rafi'in. Wa akalna min min ar-rutab." Okay? And then he said, "What is this mean?" Al-Aqabah al-aqibah, the end. So, he took the name and he interpreted the name based on the meaning of the name. Rafi' from the elevation, so we will have honor. And then at-tayyib ar-rutab is the goodness. So, he he interpreted this dream that this ummah will be elevated and honored, and they will have all goodness coming and approaching them. He took that from what? From the So, it is knowledge, it is science that people have, it's also fatwa, it's also deen. And want to mention something that is very important. Dreams Dreams interpretation or person who interpret dream must have two things. Cuz it it links here. Two things. Knowledge and inspiration. Subhanallah. Okay? You might have the knowledge, you might be scholar you but you Allah but you don't have that inspiration, you don't have that gift to understand things and and look at it and then it it gives you that impression and that's feeling. Yours is So, not every scholar is dream interpreter. Cuz people are they'll just come to the masjid and ask, "If you tell them don't know, what do you mean you don't know?" Subhanallah, don't know what to but fatwa. Imam Malik said they they asked Imam Malik, he said, don't interpret." don't know. So, I'm I'm not in this don't don't see myself in it. But Imam Malik had knowledge the Imam of the the madh- the Imam of Dar al-Hijrah. So, why he why didn't he interpret the dream? So, all the scholars was asked, "Why you do you don't interpret dream?" He said, "I'm not Yusuf He And Yusuf was inspired, but Allah said wa a'allamnak. So, we'll give you the knowledge. The king when he asked qala in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala dhakara dhikra anbi'uni bi ta'wil. So, so he he told him, "Give me the interpretation of the ta'wil, the interpretation of my dream." Qalu adghathu ahlam. Wa ma nahnu bi ta'wilil ahlam bi 'alimin. Allah. They said, "We don't have that knowledge. So they were not in specs. So they knew of the knowledge of interpretation, but they knew that there was not but they didn't have it. So it's it's mixture of both if Allah gifted you so part of it in which you study in both as knowledge Quran Hadith and part of it is gift from Allah and both have to come to you. Like get very surprised when someone doesn't understand Arabic language and they do interpretation of dreams and they use the Quran verses not understanding What what does not work with the cat for the shona? Lucky cat here that she laughed. No, don't like in the Arabic language that she had her menstruation period. So now bike could be interpreted as what in dreams? It's the opposite and this is another fundamental that that we sometimes interpret by the opposite of what the individual sees. So it is not always what you what you hear and you go all that she was laughing therefore no. We're talking about the bad impression of the dreams and I'm going to say something very severe that the people like to hear these stories. Sometimes person sees you know, forgive me for that but it's knowledge. person seeing the day they are having an intimacy or relationship with one sister or mother or and if when you wake up from dream like that I'm sure you're going to be shocked would be blessed about and if you tell it to someone the first word that comes out is what? That dream could be interpreted that this person is very obedient to his mother. They had very strong connection and relationship. Yes, part of it that the Shaitan gets but the outcome of it that you're being kind to your mother, you're being kind to your sister, you're doing great. Keep it up. Give them more so that can help them and support we shifting his mind from the dream itself to something good and instead of saying do repent cuz repent is Repentant from what? From what? It is out of his control. If one of the Sheikhs was with he said that lot of times again just some other point here as well. Something you see in dream will not mean the same thing in every dream. Yes. Meaning you could see black cat for example but it will mean something different for you. Yes. Than me. That's why Ibn Sirin when he would when people would ask him would sit with them sometimes from Fajr to Ishraq and sometimes from Ishraq to Dhuhr asking them about their life so he can give them an explanation that fit them. Yes. So every dream is different. Depends on the person. The time. The circumstance. Even time difference. If you see that you're losing hair or you're cutting your hair. Are you cutting your hair during Hajj and Umrah time? Or are you cutting your hair outside of that time? You cutting your hair it might be that inshallah you're going for Hajj and Umrah. I'm going to interpret this way. Someone else could interpret that you're losing your money. Your wealth. It's completely different. Allah okay making Adhan. The individual The story of Ibn Sirin we always mention Ibn Sirin because he is he's very famous in Tafsir but his book is not. You know we're going to mention in talk upon inshallah. But Ibn Sirin for example when the person came he said saw myself making Adhan. He said you will go for Hajj. So okay and he left. After while another person came. He came into the Majlis the gathering. He said saw myself making Adhan. He said you're thief. And he said don't stop don't cut your hands off. Or your hands will get cut. So his students were wondering like it's the same dream the same Adhan. He said when he saw the first person he looked religious and righteous. So that reminded me of the ayah. See he took the interpretation he took the holy Quran and then he went to the Quran. Wa Adhdin fi nasi bil Hajj. Ibrahim was called to make Adhan for people to come for Hajj. He said the second person didn't look right. So it reminded me of the ayah. Fa Adhdana mu'adhdhinum baynahum ayyatuhal hayru innakum la sariqun. The Adhan was called in the story of Yusuf for the the thief who stole the scale of the the weight or the scale. So, it depends on the person.
