It's the outcome that most governments say they want. The two-state solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, allowing the birth of Palestinian state to live in peace alongside Israel. Next week, Sakir Stalmer will almost certainly announce Britain's recognition of Palestine as state. But there's problem. There is no Palestinian state. There will be no Palestinian state. And probably there cannot be Palestinian state because creating one is almost certainly impossible. Here's the West Bank, which would be the basis of any Palestinian state. And here's how it's been split into three areas, the biggest of which, area is under complete Israeli control. How could you build viable state out of areas and now under limited Palestinian Authority control? Israel would need to withdraw from large expanses of territory. But the West Bank is crisscrossed by over 140 settlements and scores of illegal outposts with about half million Israeli inhabitants. The biggest settlement, Maliadamin, has 38,000 people, about the same as medium-sized British town. No Israeli government under any prime minister is going to evict Israelis living across the West Bank and bulldoze their homes to make way for Palestinian state. And haven't even mentioned Jerusalem, which both sides want as their recognized capital. How would you divide the city into two capitals, particularly when another 200,000 Israeli settlers live in Palestinian East Jerusalem? And haven't talked about the holy places right next to one another in the old city. Then there's Gaza, which would need to be the outlet to the sea for any Palestinian state. How would that work when much of Gaza has been destroyed? We've done another video on that. Palestinian state may be desirable. It may even on paper at least be technically feasible, but it's almost certainly beyond anyone's grasp. The two-state solution, the key to peace, but practically impossible.
