Some Grandparents live near to their Grandchildren, but others can live further away, making it difficult to see them very often. Some children are fortunate enough to know their Grandparents and see them regularly, but some children do not know them. What Is Grandparents' Day? Grandparents' Day started in the UK in 1990 after it was set up by the charity now called Age UK. Since 2008, it has been celebrated on the first Sunday in October. Grandparents' Day is celebrated on different days in many countries around the world. It is thought that Grandparents' Day originated in the USA. lady called Marian McQuade volunteered in nursing home and realised that many of the elderly residents received very few visitors. This gave her the inspiration to campaign for day to recognise and celebrate the importance of the older generation to younger people. Five years later, in 1978, the US president of the time, Jimmy Carter, announced that Grandparents Day' was to become an official day every year. The Purpose of Grandparents' Day Grandparents Day' is time to: Celebrate grandparents and if able to, spend time together Give grandparents the opportunity to show their love for their grandchildren; Help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. Bake If you live close to your grandparents, then you can make memories in the kitchen and bake some treats together. If you live far away, then you may be able to video call and make the same recipe together. Go for walk Going for walk is great way to exercise, chat and learn about the natural world. In October, you may be able to see signs of autumn colours and other signs of autumn such as spotting conkers and acorns on the floor.
