Are true false questions tripping you up on those exams? Let's talk strategy. These can be tricky, and they're often made that way on purpose. I'm not sure why. But the trick here that found is to rate them assuming they're true and then look for reason that they are false. So maybe the correct term was replaced with an incorrect one, or maybe there is NOT hiding in there that shouldn't be. Now names, numbers, and key terms are often candidates for this kind of switch out, to see if you'll catch it. So let's look at some examples. First we have this statement: the first president of the United States, Alexander Hamilton served as general in the battle for Independence. Here, obviously, George Washington was switched out for Alexander Hamilton. Another example here: standardized measures of IQ have mean of 100 and standard deviation of 20. 20 in this statement should actually be 15. So in both of these examples name or number was the target for switch out, so those are two key pieces of information to pay special attention to as you are evaluating true false items. Next lots of detail also increases the odds that statement is false. So for example, this statement: the attack on Pearl Harbor, which happened in 1941, is observed each year on October 7th, Pearl Harbor Day. So there are lots of details here in this statement and that increases the odds that there is something false here. Pearl Harbor could be false. 1941 could be false. October could be false. Seventh could be false. And Pearl Harbor Day could be false. So if you encountered this item and you just weren't sure if it was true or false, with all of these details packed in here the odds are this is false. And the false detail in this statement actually is October, it should be December 7th. Another thing to keep in mind with true false is that keywords like only, always, and never are often indicators of false statements. Now don't want to say this is always the case because there are always exceptions, but when you see only always or never in true false statement really analyze it with critical eye, because often there will be an exception that it's trying to get you to catch. So some examples here: on reading assessments, low-income children always soar lower than high income children. So always would be flagged here. Yes there is research indicates that on average low-income children score lower than higher income children due to resources and variety of other factors, but there can always be low-income child that has higher reading score than high income child. So that always there is big red flag that this is likely false statement. Another example: the only way to memorize lists is to use the chunking technique. So here, the chunking technique is one way but it is not the only way. So again seeing only in true false statement is often flag that it is likely false statement. Extreme preciseness is also often clue that true false statement is false. For example, research shows that 67.2 percent of children have some sort of learning disability. Or in the study, children were able to resist the marshmallow for an average of 4.7 minutes. Now while it is possible for these very precise numbers to be true, it's also relatively unlikely, because again as we mentioned before, numbers are frequent point of change out in these true false statements. And when things get so precise like that, it's relatively unlikely that you would have been asked to learn number that precise. And so often, if you don't know whether this is true or false, it's best to guess false. Now you don't want to spend too much time on true false questions - it's so easy to overthink them, to go back and forth. If in doubt and there are any of the flags here that we mentioned, mark it as false and move on so that you make sure you can dedicate your most effort to those items that are worth lot more. Now if you found this video helpful, you'll probably be interested in my next video which is strategy on multiple choice items. So if that's out it will be right up in the corner. Thanks so much for watching everybody, good luck with your studying!
