In the theoretical framework, you explain the theories that support your research, showing that your work is grounded in established ideas. Stay tuned to learn how to write one! Hi, I'm Jessica from Scribbr, here to help you achieve your academic goals. The goal of theoretical framework is to present and explain the theories and models that other researchers have already developed. There may be many different theories about your topic, so the theoretical framework also involves evaluating, comparing, and selecting the most relevant ones. Here are 3 steps to create theoretical framework, let's get right in! Step 1, identify your key concepts The first step is to pick out the key terms from your problem statement and research questions, and clearly define these terms. shav Step 2, evaluate and explain relevant theories As you write the theoretical framework, aim to compare and critically evaluate the approaches that different authors have proposed. For example, in this example here, we compared Thomassen's definition of customer satisfaction with Zeithaml and Bitner's. After discussing different models and theories, you establish the definitions that best fit your research and justify why this is the case. So in our case, we explained why we went for Thomassen's definition, because it’s the most relevant to the aims of this study. In more complex research projects, you might combine theories from different fields to build your own unique framework. Step 3, show how your research fit in Apart from discussing other people’s theories, the theoretical framework should show how your own project will make use of these ideas. You might aim to do one or more of the following: Test whether theory holds in specific context Use theory as basis for interpreting your results Which is what our example did here. Critique or challenge theory Combine different theories in new or unique way In thesis or dissertation, the theoretical framework is sometimes integrated into literature review chapter.
