Welcome to Math with Mr. In this video, I'm going to cover how to subtract integers. Now, when it comes to subtracting integers, we're actually going to add the opposite. And we have four examples here that we're going to go through together in order to get this down. So, let's jump into number one where we have 6 -4. So, let's add the opposite. So, we start with positive 6 and we add the opposite of -4, which is positive 4. And 6 + 4 gives us 10. And that's our final answer, positive 10. Now, that answer may look incorrect because if you think about it, we started with positive 6 and this is subtraction problem and we somehow ended up with positive 10. So, we increased in value although this was subtraction problem. So, that kind of goes against what we typically think when it comes to subtraction. And that's because when you subtract negative, you are increasing in value. And you can think of it like this, and still remember this from when learned about subtracting integers. So, when you subtract negative, think of it like this, taking away or subtracting debt, which is positive or good thing. So, you are increasing in value. So, something to think about and do have video where go through subtracting integers using number lines and that video can help with visualizing what's going on within these problems and just give better overall understanding of subtracting integers. So, let's move on to number two where we have negative 5 - 3. So, let's add the opposite. So, -5 plus the opposite of positive 3 is negative 3. So, we're starting at -5 and we're adding -3. So, we are decreasing in value. So, we are going to end up with an answer of -8. Let's move on to number three where we have -1 -9. -1 and then add the opposite. So, the opposite of -9 is positive 9. -1 + 9, well, that's going to give us positive 8 for our answer. So, remember when we subtract negative, we actually increase in value from what we started with. For example, number three, -1 we started with and we increased by positive 9 there. We increased by 9 to give us an answer of positive 8. And lastly, number four, -8 -7. Add the opposite. The opposite of -7 is positive 7. So, -8 + 7 gives us negative 1. So, there you have it. There's how you subtract integers. Use the strategy of adding the opposite. hope that helped.
