Welcome to math with Mr. In this video, we're going to discuss what absolute value is. And absolute value is the distance number is from zero. So, we have four examples that are on your screen there that we're going to talk about here, so we know exactly what absolute value means. We also have number line that will help us visualize what absolute value means. So, let's jump right into number one here. And we have negative two. Now, these bars here that are around the negative two, that just means the absolute value of negative two. And it's to shorten so you don't have to write out the words the absolute value of negative two, we use those bars as symbol. So, all this is saying is how far is negative two from zero. So, let's find negative two on our number line here, and we need to find how far away it is from zero. Well, negative two is one, two away from zero, right? Two jumps away from zero. So, the answer actually is positive two because that's how far away negative two is from zero. Now, let's take look at number two. We have positive two, which is right here. How far away is that from zero? Well, you guessed it, two, right? One, two. Two jumps, just like negative two. So, the absolute value of positive two is also two. Again, absolute value, how far that number is away from zero. So, now for number three, we have negative eight. Well, negative eight is over here, and it's eight. It's That's how far it is away from zero. Eight jumps or positive eight. And lastly, number four, positive 25. What's the absolute value of positive 25? Well, how far is it away from zero? And it is 20 five away from zero. So, there you have it. Absolute value, just the distance number is from zero. And those bars around the number just mean just means to find the absolute value.
