Tonight, why was Muslim call to prayer canled in Regina? Checking out the new tailgate zone at the Rider Game. And Regina pub is close to reopening after water mane break. Live from our studios in Regina, this is CTV News. Good evening. Regina mosque canled call to prayer today after sparking unexpected backlash on social media. The three-minute call was to have been broadcast by loudspeakers located on top of mosque. But as Wayne Mantiko tells us, the plan was called off to allow for consultation with the neighborhood. small crowd of onlookers gathered outside new downtown mosque to hear 3minut call inviting Muslims to worship. they they shouldn't need that either. get an app and if it's going to be five times day, holy moly. believe in freedom of religion, but think to be broadcasting publicly, that's pushing. Police were on standby after first call to worship week ago sparked debate about appropriate volume levels. Police also issued warning about hate speech. This week's call never materialized. If it's over, 100%. Praise to God it's over. Yeah. Inside the mosque, the leadership said decision was made not to proceed with the call until the neighborhood is consulted. So that is what also we are assessing from the local like the community to understand like what are they thinking about the volume of the sound? If it is required to reduce the volume obviously because we are here like working each other. The mosque has received messages of support from the Catholic Church and from the Anglican Cathedral located across the street. That when people don't fully understand something and and in this case understand maybe the the Muslim faith and and Muslim tradition, what happens is is that they rely on on folks who are either inflaming or or casting about fear. And so what we get from that is is is fearful and an angry response instead of of one that that extends the hand and says, "Hey, I'd like to understand more. Help me help me understand what's going on here." The mosque will promptly canvas the neighborhood and may hold an open house to gather feedback. decision on resuming the public Friday call to prayer will be guided by the results. Wayne Mantika, CTV News, Regina. Two people were taken to hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries after stabbing yesterday morning in Regina. Officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of 11th Avenue around 9:15 in the morning for report of two stab victims. Both were sent to hospital. The suspect was found blocks away by police. 23-year-old woman is now facing two counts of assault with weapon. She'll make her first court appearance on August the 6th. Well, the Saskatchewan Rough Riders are set to take on the Toronto Argonauts tonight at Mosaic Stadium. And with kick hour or kickoff just an hour away the tailgate scene is in full swing as fans gear up for game time. Donovace is live at the riders tailgating festivities and joins us now live tonight. So what's the atmosphere like? Pretty casual see. Man, it's just been so great hanging down here. Like I've been at the grounds since about 2:00 today and the party really hasn't stopped since then. We've been welcomed in by some gracious hosts as well. Hot Rider Nation being more than welcoming down here at the tailgate. Tailgate number two, game number three for Saskatchewan. And you wouldn't be able to tell that the Riders are the away team tonight against Toronto based on the party that's going on down here. It's the first official week of summer. And where else would you rather be than right here at the Mosaic Stadium tailgate? I've been in Regina 14 years. I've been trying to get this tailgate thing going on forever. And just the the opportunity to actually get it done. had to make it had to make it here. We've been to other tailgating in other cities. It's fun. It's lots of fun. So, we're we're really glad that the riders did this. Now, want the the number one goal for the past hour for me after was was securing hot dog. was able to do that. Check that box off. So, the tailgate experience is pretty much near perfect for me down here. They got everything you could think of. There was full chili dog setup, like the whole platter laid out. Everything that you needed for the perfect chili dog, onions, cheese, of course, the chili. the games are spectacular. There's the cornhole. There's guys playing catch with the football. was playing catch with them little bit earlier. It's just great vibe down here. We're and man, season pass holders get to set up, but anyone can just walk in and around here and it's about as full as they could get right now. Again, less than an hour before kickoff now, so it is going to start clearing out as fans head into the stadium. Well, after major flood due to water mane break outside their building, Bushwhacker in Regina has announced its tenative opening date, hoping to reopen next week sometime. It's one step closer to reopening. obviously for football game Friday, we couldn't let Ryder Nation down without getting some Wackerville beer. So, we do have our off sale open today from noon until 6:00 Saturday as well. so it it's bringing us one step closer. Still lot of work to do today. Bushwhacker were able to open the doors to customers with off sale. This is work continues outside to try and get the restaurant fully operational. Bar manager Grant Fu targeting July 2nd as their day to welcome guests once again. We are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. It It's been much longer tunnel than we are anticipating, but yeah, we're going to get there. While extensive cleanup continues in the basement, they are optimistic that they will be able to open before next week's first Firkin Friday. Very important time. All right, thank you Sierra. The wet weather has prevented another record-breaking wildfire season so far in Saskatchewan. However, storm activity is sparking fires with lightning the culprit behind six new blazes. All those new wildfires are in the northern and western part of the province, one acre in size or smaller. There are 41 active wildfires in Saskatchewan. Eight are uncontained, 27 still being assessed. The biggest fire is the Lobstick Fire south of Shelbrook. It is close to 19,000 acres in size. Well, four friends who were at the right place at the right time when home went up in flames Wednesday night in Saskatoon. Keenan Sorcon has more on some quick thinking that turned into rescue. It's drive home these four friends will never forget. Tuesday night at about4 to 1 in the morning, they saw flames coming from this home and quickly turned the car around and went into action. Me and Amber ran right out of the car as soon as we could and we ran straight to the house, straight to the neighbors to knock on the doors, get everyone out. As another friend called 911, an 89year-old man answered the door wondering what all the noise was about. Unaware the upper floor of his home was on fire. After walking him out the door to safety, Lucas learned he happened to be awake taking medication, which was very crazy timing. We couldn't imagine really if he was asleep at that time. But as the man realized what was happening and feared he may lose his home and sentimental possessions, Lucas wanted to help. felt it was my duty to run in and grab as much as could cuz knew still had time. She came out seconds later with an armful of family photos, blanket, and some medication. But that's when she saw the car in the driveway next to the burning home. We went back in second time, grabbed the keys real fast, shut the door, and then moved the car around. Amber Harper, who stood at the doorway while this happened, says that's just Lucas's nature. She is always the one to just go for it. It wasn't even hesitation. Fire department is investigating the cause and estimating damages. After couple of days of reflection, the girls are thankful they were in the right place at the right time to help. It's unreal that we were able to do that. right timing for sure, just like putting us in that place at the right time and handling the situation calmly and with poise that took all of them by surprise to ultimately rescue someone from burning home. don't think any of us second guessed what we were supposed to do. think we all just kind of jumped right into action. Kenan Sora Khan, CTV News, Saskatoon. happy that he The crown is seeking prison sentence for former Saskatoon massage therapist convicted of sexual assault. The defense is asking that he serves his sentence in the community. Stacy Hine has more on today's sentencing arguments. The crown says former Saskatoon massage therapist Kenneth Braun should receive 4-year prison sentence, saying he abused his position of trust and authority. Braun was first charged in June 2022. The 70-year-old was convicted last November of five counts of sexual assault involving former female clients between 2010 and 2021. Evidence heard during his trial remains under publication ban to protect the integrity of future court proceedings. Brun's defense is seeking conditional sentence of two years less day that would allow him to serve his sentence in the community. The defense says Braun's three decades as Saskatoon correctional officer would put his safety at risk in jail. The defense filed 58 letters of support, including some from former patients, friends, and relatives. Court heard victim impact statements from four women. Many read their statements through tears, describing how the assaults affected their sense of safety and trust. The Massage Therapist Association of Saskatchewan also submitted community impact statement, saying Bronn's actions caused distress within the profession and betrayed the public's trust. At the end of the hearing, Braun stood up in court and said there's lot he wanted to say, but after four years, it's too late. The decision on his sentencing has been reserved until September. Stacy Hine, CTV News, Saskatoon. Well, the city of Moose Jaws temporarily closed the dog park on the 1500 block of High Street West. Now, while the city is keeping the exact reason under wraps, they did ask owners who had their dogs there recently to monitor their animals for signs of illness and go to vet if they show those signs. Well, today marks the 50th anniversary of the Western Development Museum in Moojaw. The museum had variety of free events for people to help celebrate. From retro shorts being played by the National Film Board to 1970s inspired selfie spots. short program helped highlight this milestone as the museum reflects on five decades of stories, memories, community connections. One of Saskatchewan's best known authors, Gail Bowen, has died. Many avid readers loved her mystery and crime novel series. Her works were published from 1990 to 2025. She was also an English professor at the First Nations University of Canada, receiving the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2018. She passed away battling cancer at the age of 84. In 1997, Ontario-based music festival Edgefest brought thousands to the fields surrounding what was then known as Sask Place. think this is like kind of memory of it and bringing, you know, our old fans back. The death toll has risen to at least 920 people with more than 3,000 injured in the aftermath of two devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday. local resident says he saw building sway and hit neighboring building as soon as the first tremor struck. All of them came crashing down in matter of seconds. He says the people there at the time are presumed dead, but he's not losing hope. Meanwhile, the race to rescue an estimated 50,000 missing people is intens intensifying 2 days after the earthquakes hit near Caracus. Rescue teams and relief are pouring into Venezuela for more than 20 countries. Canada providing $5 million to support emergency relief efforts. Israel and Lebanon have reached framework agreement to bring peace and security to both countries. We are happy to announce the framework agreement between the sovereign government of of Lebanon and and of course the government of Israel with mediation and support of the United States of America that begins to put in place framework for lasting peace and security. And that's what these two nations deserve. The people of Lebanon have suffered tremendously now for decades as result of outside interference in their affairs of of countries trying to use the country as launch pad for attacks. And this is not what the people of Lebanon want and that's not what they deserve. What they deserve to have. The trilateral agreement was announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington alongside Israel and Lebanon's ambassadors to the US. Rubio says it establishes process for Israel to pull out of Lebanon once the threat from Hezbollah is removed. Prime Minister Mark Carney is launching national design and build competition to modernize 24 Sussex Drive nearly 11 years after the last prime minister called it home. Carney says the goal is to build an accessible and sustainable official residence. Abigail BMAN has more on the states of the historic address. This home is just one year younger than Canada. And while much progress has been made in the treatment for PTSD for Canada's first responders, recent symposium examined areas where more needs to be done. Pauline Chan has the details. of when you're police officer, you're the one that's called for help. you're not the one that needs help. Teresa is 22-year police veteran from Manitoba. looked at the uniform and wanted to be part of something important. She loves her job, but in her desire to excel in caring for others, her own health deteriorated. You forget your family. You forget your kids. In fact, it's like you almost want to avoid it. couple of years ago, she left work and sought help, but it wasn't easy. hate it here. don't want to be here. So, that was the first thing noticed, right? So, but then as got here and met other people that have basically fought the same battle as me, well, what like to think of it is we're all on the same boat fighting different pirates. recent symposium in Colona hosted by Diversified Rehab looked at the latest in PTSD treatments for first responders. Aside from mental health stigma, aside from not reaching out, we are still operating in silos. And the symposium is classic example how those silos could be taken apart in literally minutes. One of the feedback pieces that they received was that leaders need training. How do you lead others? How do we take care of our people around us and build those relationships where trust is the foundation? In September, we're going to be launching first workshop for leaders to come join us so they can gain the right skills. RCMP Sergeant Rob Farer is the new leader of the National Police Federation and says the need is urgent. the suicide rates have not diminished and that is where really like that's that's the one to me the the biggest and most glaring red flag that we need to change. Teresa says she came into the treatment program with lot of anger, but it special focus on the needs of first responders helped. We were able to relate immediately with the sensations, with the emotions, with the loneliness, with the the anger. That was like big one. When you talk about mental health, different individuals will react positively to different type of support and then that's why we have this array of services that are available to them. Again, scattered thunderstorms are expected to happen in that afternoon part of Sunday. And as into Monday, those rainy conditions are going to continue, but it will be light compared to what we were seeing for the weekend. Brody's career started at just 6 years old, following his father's footsteps, playing with him in the symphony, then inheriting his music school. We caught up with Rashu, who says that he and dozens of others owe their careers to Broaddy's mentorship.
